Trouble In Paradise...

Well if a few of you regulars have been wondering why I havent been on the forum or out fishing much lately, I've been having 'issues' with OotB.

On the Portsmouth trip the Honda started to misfire at low revs.

The next week it was due into Poole Marine Services for some routine warrenty work.... so whilst it was in I asked them to have a look and replace the plugs (which is where I thought the problem was) this was done, and they told me it was running sweet. So parted with over

What I can't understand is why PMS and the others didn't check the oil, emulsified oil is a give away that water is getting into the engine, normally this is via the head gasket and checking the consistency of the oil is one of the first thing you would check.

Exactly... mad.gif

I fully sympathise particularly as the weather is getting better. Blue Boy is out of commission at the moment as one of the engines has packed up - that is why I am left with the kayak!

Good luck with OOTB - you are more than welcome on Blue Boy once it is sorted. Should be ready for my holiday starting on Thursday.

Who are you dealing with at PMS?

We had simular problems with two 40 HP Honda 4 strokes so they should have an idea what was required to fix them.

Call me on the mobile if you can stand to talk through it all

Sorry to hear that so many Members are out of action, I thought it was just me missing out on this fine weather

Adam,

Sorry to hear you're having the same problem I had, how old is the engine? Should be a warranty claim if less than 5 years, my Mercury was just out of its 3 year warranty but the dealer managed to get 50% towards the repair from Marine Power Europe as a good will gesture.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry to hear of your problems Adam

That is hell of a price for the repair is that for the short engine?

I am sure you will get many offers of trips, we may even get Alfresco afloat in time to offer you a trip before you can get OOTB back on song

All the best mate

Adam if its any help I have probably got the full honda workshop manual for your outboard if its a relativley new 4 stroke (post 1999) and could print you a copy and send to you, just let me know the model and year. Doing the replacment of the head isnt actualy that scary a job if youve got a decent set of plans, a bit of time and half an idea how it all works its not beyond anyone with a bit of mechanical ability. Sourcing a second hand head or having the origional repaired will be the hard bit, assuming you sort this its just a case of strip down and replace using new gaskets followed by a full flush to make sure you get rid of any salt water left in the crankcase. Good luck.

LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL...

Well the upshot is that yesterday I had confirmation from Honda that they will honour a 'good-will' Warrenty claim for me. biggrin.gif

The boat is now back at home, she is going down to PMS next tues to have the engine taken off as a full re-build is required and possibly a whole new block and powerhead.

Probably 3/4 weeks before I get her back, but will be nearly a new engine.

Actually Kudos for Honda, I am currently is dispute with BT and a local car dealership both matters are going through Trading Standards for pitifull and in fact criminal behaviour by two organisations (one should know better) and anyone who has had to deal with BT will know that their customer services are only better that British Gas (which is no mean achievement).

Therefore it is nice to hear of a company that treats it's customers as customers and not a golden goose and then promptly kills them.

I'm happy for you.

PS Anyone know anyone who can fit a new head gasket on Ford 4D diesel ?
