Paul D Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Surf reef Given Gohead Bournemouth 's Proposed Artificial Reef SURF REEF IS GO! Quote
Paul J Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Perhaps this might pave the way for more artificial reefs in Poole bay for Fishing? I doubt it as we arn't as glamourous as surfers PJ Quote
charlieannear Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Bu on those flat calm days that the surfers hate, we can get out and see what fish the reef is attracting, and what nice BIG fish are attracted by those! Quote
djredrupp Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 pecialist construction material for the reef will be ordered, including the ecologically sound geo-textile bags yes.. very good but... ... from Australia... From new Zealand is it me, or does that kind of defeat the object of using environmentally friendly materials? Dan Quote
Adam F Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Yes Dan it does - it's called embedded carbon costs. It looks very good in print though and picks the PR boxes for these people! I have always liked the idea of encapsulating waste (tyres, fridges etc) that have been cleaned in concrete and using them..... Quote
Maverick Martin Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Yes Dan it does - it's called embedded carbon costs. It looks very good in print though and picks the PR boxes for these people! I have always liked the idea of encapsulating waste (tyres, fridges etc) that have been cleaned in concrete and using them..... Trouble is Adam where does the gravel for the concrete come from and the cement used is not very user friendly either Its not easy to be environmentally friendly even when using what is percieved to be safe material Martin Quote
Neal Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 I wonder....... Creating what could also become a classic surf beach for bass fishing. Do you think that the Council will allow other "sports" to benefit from this artificial reef or just the Surfers. I am not going bet that Sea Anglers will be banned from fishing anywhere this stretch of shore. Cynical or realistic........ Neal Quote
alun j. Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 But you'll only be able to fish it at night.......due to the numbers of surfers that will be there [almost permenantly]. Even on Weds., when it was almost flat, there were 20 or more of them in the water near the pier............ but, oddly, none further down at Southbourne, where the residual swell was throwing up some nice breakers ! [Herding creatures??] Alun Quote
charlieannear Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 Probably a gross generalisation but... Majority of "surfers" round here seem to like to ride the wake created by Bournemouth pier. They buy their gear in Hot Rocks or other overpriced high street water-sport-boutique and go down to the beach... The type of person who, if they were in boats, we would call Birmingham navy... All the gear and no idea. Coming from Cornwall I think it barely qualifies as surfing- I've never seen any waves worth getting my wet suit on for! People who use Southbourne seem a bit better informed and tend to be out when the conditions are right, including a nice steady offshore breeze. I think the surf reef is great. It will keep hundreds of these so-called "Surfers" out of the decent waves further west! The reef can only be good for fishing though can't it? Even if we can't drop a line right on the structure, it can only have a positive effect on local biodiversity and add links to the food chain in the area? Or am I justy being overly optimistic... plaicemat Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 Of course you're being optimistic, Charlie. If you weren't, you wouldn't be an angler! Terry. Quote
duncan Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 Dan - absolutely! Terry - perceptive as ever... Personally I am concerned about this October 2008 swell that has been so precisely forecast; I have made arrangements this year based on May, June, Sept and Oct being absolutely flat and windless in the area around the club waters and feel it' s abit early for anyone to tell me it won't be like that! on the other hand can we add the new species surfer;surfer to the record sheets in anticipation of bumper catches? Quote
charlieannear Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 (edited) If we add, may I propose, Neopreneus Surferusii (Surfer, Lesser Migrating), Mike Fox is sure to argue we need to add Neopreneus Diverusii to the list and with him as club record holder (Diver, Gul as opposed to the more common Diver, Ripcurl) Edited January 18, 2008 by charlieannear Quote
duncan Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 thanks for the laugh - will make the weekend a lot better after today's meetings! Quote
great white Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 One to avoid because of it agression nature is DIVERSBS LOL But thats another storey for a wet and windy night and a few beers Charlie Quote
Sinbad Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 I hear that, plans for concrete encapsulation in the construction have been abandonned, in favour of wood..... depending on what 'turns up' Quote
