Maverick Martin
Well we are coming into the quite time of year and all thoughts will be turning to our years plans. One place that always gets my mind thinking of better times is Alderney. I will try and get over there at least once this year and am starting to look at the diary. One thought was the weekend of our 48 hour comp but this is the weekend after the WSF Weymouth meet and I don't think I will be able to swing two full weekends away in tandem. Is any other boat owners up for a trip across the channel and if so what dates would suit you sir? When we have sorted out a date and a list of boats interested maybe we can then see if there are any spaces for crew or not as the case maybe. alun j.
Any date, any space as crew [ and cook !] ......add my name to a list... able to go at any time. Alun.
great white
We are very Keen to get across the other side and try the fishing around the Islands on Alfresco. Timing will be the hardest part, as a newcomer to this areas fishing I do not know what the best times are. Or any of the many other essentials like where to fish, how, where to fish for bait etc etc etc. Adding that to my work commitments in the sailing season, Dans GCSE's and other family plans All of this will make it hard for us to be sure of when we can join others to go accross channel. I think I will have to leave others to sort out dates tides etc and join in as and when we can. But do not get me wrong we are very very keen to go. I have an ariel photo poster of alderney on the wall in my garage workshop for inspiration during the long hours we spent boat building. Please remind me when is the 48 hr and the trip to Weymouth? TomBettle
I'll certainly hope to make the journey aboard Quest II from Weymouth. I didn't make it last year as I was too busy, but I nw have an alteria motive and if a multi boat trip was planned I would be very keen indeed. Charlie, this is not exact as, of course, fish can be caught at other times, but. Flatties from the end of April with a neap tide in May being ideal. This ties in nicely with some good Ling on the wrecks too. Bass on any of the Summer Springs and Bream on anything from May onwards. Tope from June and of course as the Summer progresses some of the best sharking potential in the English Channel. I would need to try and find space in the diary as Spring is rather busy to say the least, but I am definitely keen.... if I haven't sold Quest II by then (I am not exactly trying hard, but she is tentatively for sale through lack of use). If I have then I'd be hoping to crew.... please. Tom
Neal
Martin, I am keen to take the boat on a cross channel trip. With John, my usual crew and other(s) who care to join us. Pretty much available anytime with sufficient notice Neal
AHoy
I hope to be taking Marsel 2 on one of the clubs cross-channel trips. Subject to sorting out family interest in the trip I should have room for one or two crew. Should be fairly flexible on dates with enough notice. A. Adam F
Maybe.... just maybe.... On a serious note - if I dont take 'my boat' over I'd be happy to crew and show the area's etc that fish - Ive been over a few times now so whilst no expert managed a decent haul last time we went solo without a charter. I can also go midweek at short(ish) notice and would be happy to go with just one or two boats.
Maverick Martin
One thing to consider is accommodation? Dean and I will sleep on Awol comfortably. If we take another crew member it would be very cosy to say the least so maybe not practical. What arrangements would others consider? Also in Alderney we would be reliant on the water taxi and that is ok except it normally stops at 10ish so early nights would be forced. What we could do with is a couple of dinghies to ferry ashore anyone got one? There must be other items that need thinking through, any ideas? great white
One of the reasons we can not be certain is that Sam is joining the Navy on June 8th. and has now started a job untill just before he joins up at Royal Motor Yacht Club. Wendy will be keen to see him as much as poss before he goes, but he is keen to get at least one trip accross. Now we have the problem of organising time off for two of us from yacht Clubs in the summer. We will keep everything crossed to get a chance. duncan
of all the issues raised in the above posts to me the decisive one is the weather - everything else can be handled to a degree (although really big tides aren't great for the flats...........and can turn some marks into a good impression of a washing machine too! I only have one thing in the diary before August and it inevitably falls 7-14 June.............BBBBB FFFFF I just might be able to resolve for the 48hr weekend but the Weymouth plan looks like it just got scrapped for me. I assume the latter weekend is the neaper tides? Basically I will look to run over in any good weather window from April onwards and could be overnighting in Alderney, St Peter Port or anchored up off the Swinge for the night depending on conditions, provisions and company. On the other hand I am not really into stopping off on the wrecks a lot on such trips - but am happy to head over for just the weekend and 2 good days fishing. If we think we are going we will of course post on here anyway.

I would also look to go at the drop of a hat if conditions proved to good to miss but I also think there should be some sort of planning to allow a group of us to go together. Most definately the weather would play the largest part in considering a trip over. Talking of weather what would be the max you (all) would consider going over in? Swainiac
Martin, hasnt the guy from Alderney angling a tender? If so, perhaps a gesture might be appreciated if he can sort out use?? Rich
duncan
I totally agree Martin. Good reasons for a few boats - but equally good ones to avoid complex detailed arrangements!
TomBettle
Talking of weather what would be the max you (all) would consider going over in? Martin Martin What was the weather we had on that crossing when I joined you guys with Quest II and Duncan came on Phaeton? I wouldn't want to cross in any more than that. It is no longer fun. I seem to remember that was about a 5 on the nose????? It dies off nicely by the afternoon (after we had made an early run for it to miss the forecast of it arriving at midday) Tom
Maverick Martin
Tom I think it was a good 5 it certainly felt like it on Tiger Lilly Was that the year we had millpond weather thereafter? I would be happy going in a following/northerly 5 with the forecast giving easing. I would not want to go in much more than a top end 4 on the nose. As you say not comfortable Martin
AHoy
In general, for this sort of trip I would limit myself to F4 headwinds or F5 from astern with forecasts showing decreasing winds. The previous conditions, sea state and tide would also be factors. A. Looks some consensus here Edited February 8, 2008 by AHoy
