Weather is looking on the doubtful side,

Lands End to St Davids Head including Bristol Channel

Issued by the Met Office at 1800 UTC on Friday 18 April 2008

24 hour forecast:

Wind - Easterly or northeasterly 6 or 7, occasionally gale 8 around headlands.

Weather - Occasional rain.

Visibility - Moderate or good.

Sea State - Moderate or rough.

Outlook for the following 24 hours:

Wind - East 5 or 6, backing northeast 4.

Weather - Occasional rain.

Visibility - Moderate or good.

Sea State - Moderate or rough, becoming slight or moderate.

A question, When the forecast says "backing" is that from 6.00am as in this example or is it after a certain period?

I guess we will have to make a descision tomorrow morning

Hi Gordon,

"Backing" refers to changing direction in an anticlockwise manner. For example going from E to NE, as opposed to "Veering" which is shifting clockwise. The Outlook effectively commences at 1800 Saturday, but there is no indication (as yet) in the forecast of the timing for the backing of the wind.

However, you should be able to interpolate what is likely and when from the sequential Atlantic charts at:

Good call to defer the decision by the way! Bear in mind the flood in the Severn Estuary is from the SW, so wind over tide in shallow water might prove interesting after the NE shift.

Thanks Mike - I never knew that! You learn every day!

Postponing the comp wont be a bad thing (apart from me being forced into decorating!) at least a few more will hopefully be able to attend??

Alun you called the wind gods, didnt you, go on admit it.

I'm definately in for next time if this trip gets dropped as i have just read an article stating that there Tarpon living and breeding in the warm water from the outlets of the Aberthaw power station. I'm off into the loft to get my straight-up fighting gear out, how exciting!!!

Simon........I've got no influence on the weather......or we wouldn't be having this awful, cold , windy Spring would we ??

We'll just have to wait and see about Burnham........last year it got moved about 3 times [ from mid-March and ended up late April ]

Next time you're in Florida, I can see you getting some Tarpon 'seeds' ! We've got Barramundi being farmed in the New Forest; I wonder how long it will take for some of them to 'escape'? [ like mink, coypu, grey squirrel, signal crayfish, fathead minnow et al.]

Alun.
