corky
Couldn't quite believe my eyes as we left poole harbour enterance at about 10.30 this morning. In the distance toward poole patch I could see a heap of different boats. At first I thought there was some kind of rescue operation going on but as we got closer I realized no less than 16 boats were fishing the general area for Bream !! Joined in for an hour or so and plenty of the lovely little fellas were being caught from all manor of different vessels. It wasnt long before I was feeling the need for a bit of solitude and we opted to have a quick motor over to the Dolphin sands. As soon as we arrived the fish started biting and the fishing only slowed over slack water. Between the two of us we had around twenty whiting/ a similar number of Lsd, eight Bass (none over 1.5lb) a lovely gurnard and a couple of bream. Fantastic fun ! Unfortunately got smashed (ok mainly due to my own over eager strike) by what I think was a sizeable bass, something heavy anyway....... Jim
Small Fry headed towards Poole Patch Today, With myself, my son Stephen and his Father -in -law Martin on board. We could see some boats in the distance. I started to count. - - - 1 - 2 - 3 -4 - 5 - 6 - I can see 7 boats I declared. We were doing 22 MPH and soon realised that it was nearer 12 boats ! As we joined the group we did another count and I think it was 17 boats in total ! Due to the fact that the only Aldernay Ring I have is in my Door Chime, We decided to drift through. Nothing - Not a sausage ! We headed off towards Boscombe Pier and then kept going, hoping that magical shoal of " Big Uns " would show up on my weed finder. We ended up at Hengistbury Head and anchored up not far from a PilotHouse boat who was also fishing. Martin had the first one, a good sized wrasse. ( we won't invite him again ) Then I had a wrasse. Then Martin a couple more. ( he's definately not coming again ) Whey-Hey Steve got a Mackerel on the feathers ( good lad - a nice bit of fresh bait ) We had more wrasse - a couple of small pollack and a few more mackerel. The wives phoned and said it was time to come home as Martin had to drive back to Warwickshire. We headed back past Poole Patch and saw loads of boats still there. We decided to have a few drifts past Brownsea Castle, which resulted in more Wrasse. I hooked something ( not planet earth ) which snapped my 15lb line. We had a great day and I am no longer a BLANKER ! Cheers. Jim
duncan
sounds a great trip out there - bit worried about these monsters though; that's the second that's had a mention recently!
jack
Andy and I arrived at the alleged car park at 10.am.[late start for us] There were 26 boats on site and we made it 27. I had the smallest tope ever,It was just mackerel size. andy had a super-size Garfish.we sat it out 'till 1oc.then moved over to Ballard down, where we spent a pleasant afternoon sun-bathing.Only L.S.Ds there. Day was ruined because our freshly fitted gas cylinder was empty.an investigation required there,as man the fisher cannot survive without supplies of tea !!.Back in for 4.35. to find that the fork lift at Cobbs had died,so double banking there. At least you can just leave the shore staff to it . Another nice day out...Jack
corky
Rob - we have only tried fishing the north side of the bank at anchor or drifting over the lump in the middle. Interested to hear you had a few tope there - hoping to catch my first this season !
silverfish
Thanks Corky I will bear that in mind next time I fish it. I have only really fished the very North West end on the bank myself, I have had lots and lots of pack Tope there nothing massive but good fun none the less. fritchy
I had my first day out on the boat this year on Saturday - I think that was probably me mentioned as the Pilothouse fishing at Hengistbury Head in Smallfry's post above. It was SUPERB to be out. I missed much of last season because of problems with my boat (now sorted). So to pick such a nice calm and sunny day for first trip of the season was great. Unfortunately, beginner's luck which I hoped might return to me due to inactivity did not. All we got was a reasonable sized Garfish on a lure at Hengistbury. We then headed back to Poole Patch (after everyone had gone- we were on our own), and got a couple of wrasse (but no bream) before arriving back into the marina around 8:30. Jim
Mike, I didn't make it Clear. I was out on Sunday. So it must have been someone else that I saw. I also forgot to mention the Fog. It came in very quickly and quite thick. Lasted about 20 mins then cleared again. SPOOKY ! Jim
