Member Removed
Hi all, I was told to ask here for some advice if you dont mind. i have a 4.2m rib and i want to do some live baitng in the summer for bass but i dont have room to fit a tank with the airator to keep them alive. i dont know whether any other small boat owners have had this problem or if someone knows how to get around it? Thanks very much.......
Paul J
It's going to be catch them as you need them if you don't have a pump. You can use a bucket and keep changing the water to keep 3 or 4 alive for an hour at best. alternativley you can get one of these to keep 3-4 alive http://www.landbigfish.com/tacklestore/showcase.cfm?PID=2238 PJ
gjb
you can also use a courage this is a box full of holes that is tied to the back of the boat with a opening lid graham
Gnasher
before we had a baitwell on board, we hung a washing machine drum that we fitted a lid to. We attached it to a meter of rope and just hung it off the back. It works well at anchor, but not ideal for drifting as the pressure kills them if you motor back up the drift to quickly. But to be honest, i could find space to even in a 8ft tender to put a small tank if i wanted to that could hold half a dozen baits, so i would have been sure you there would be some space. A portable tank takes no space at all.
Adam F
I'd go for a bucket and one of these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...alenotsupported Just be sure to change the water in the bucket every 30 mins or so to keep the temp down. A course anglers keepnet is another idea, but you'll need to bring it in when you move and the wash from the boat will kill the fish and the keepnet. Member Removed
what size bucket would i need... what does that shakespeare pump do?
Adam F
I'd use a 25l fish food bucket, about 4 times the volume of a black builders bucket. The pump circulates the water and makes maximum use of the oxygen present. It will get used by the macky though, hence the need to change it every 20/30 mins. It's not ideal, but in a small rib it's adequate.
charlieannear
What's the biggest you could fit? i.e how much space do you have available? You want as big as you can manage really. http://www.solentplastics.co.uk/industrial...eringContainers or http://www.solentplastics.co.uk/marine-sto...#WatertightKegs A bit further down are the blue barrels that a lot of us use. Hope this helps. Edited January 25, 2009 by charlieannear

charlieannear
I've just edited my post to a couple of links for examples of barrels. The normal advice is to have a round barrel. I think those aerators just drop into the tank/box/barrel.
Member Removed
i could fit the 30 litre blue one how many mackerel would that fit in with the aerator in?
Gnasher
u could do something with a bucket of that size for a few joeys. id fit a little overflow tube outlet and have a hose inlet bith a cheap rule bilge attached that you could just throw over the side. I know Rich had some pics of a portable baitwell that was posted somewhere here ages ago. 100 times better than attaching just a small aerator. Member Removed
thanks for everything guys......im going to get a 30l barrel with a 360gph rule bilge pump for the inlet and a outlet hole nearer the top and a tap at the bottom to drain at the end of the day. Only problem is as the tank will be portable, i want to double the bilge pump up as a bilge pump for my boat so i will just put it in the back of the boat and it will drain through the detachable hose from the barrel. So i will need a valve on the barrel so water cannot come out when nothing is attached or the bilge pump is turned off but i can easily detach the hose from the the outside to use the pump for the water in the back of my boat. I hope you understand this!!! thanks for helping me everyone!!!!!
