HI GUYS, im a bit new to all this boat fishing mularky, this is my first season on my own. That is to say since dad died from cancer 2 years ago ,and i realy miss not being able to ask him questions about stuff. Anyways this is the situation,17ft wilson flyer bought as an empty shell from dear old brian wilson ,fitted her out over the winter months it was great fun trying to put windows in ,in minus 2 degrees and swearing at my lovely sister who was only trying to help bless her cottons sorry sis ! anyway im thinking about a fishfinder/gps unit for the boat and would appreciate any advice on where to purchase, can you get demonstrations on these things? , what is the right sort of budget to get something which will stand me in good stead as my fishing/ skippering skills develope .Before anybody says it i am planing to do my day skipper and vhf since i dont have a radio on my boat! and to be honest im not comfortable with that ,dad would have said "where's your bloody radio then nipper" so im probably looking for a fixed vhf to complement the above, something that wont give me the connectivety problems ive been reading about! i hope ive done this right its my first post . cheers .unsure.gif

Hi Rob,

Congrats on your first post, thats the hard bit out the way.

Im sure someone will be along shortly to give you advice but will probably want an idea of your budget.

There is a chartplotter on offer in the swapshop section currently which might be worth a look.

I suggest that a vhf is priority followed by a depth/fish finder of sorts

good luck and keep the queries coming

cheers

PJ

Hi Rob

A wilson flyer is a very good boat to start with, a very stable platform at rest and quick enough to get about the marks [i had one for many years, that i gutted and refitted]

Best option to view what electronics are available is to try and get along to the Southampton boat show next month, all models will be on view in the tent with the experts on hand to talk you through the options.

Personally My last two boats have used Lowrance equipment, but others are fans of Garmin, Raymarine and other makes.

For safety reasons, a VHF is a must and you are sensible in going for a fixed set.

then a GPS and fishfinder.

There are some good combined units around. I use one on Alfresco.

On the training front, as well as the VHF course, I would recomend starting with an RYA level 2 course, its more hands on for planning boats than a day skippers course.

Have fun

Charlie
