Warrior 165 anchor

I carry two hundred metres but I'm a 'just in case' kinda guy. It really depends on the depth you intend to fish at. Three times the length of warp to the depth of water; 30 metres of water = 90 metres of warp. I would hazard a guess that 100 metres would probably be enough for most of us inshore'ish chaps. What size anchor do you have from the last boat? A 5kg bruce would be perfect.

Depends where you are fishing Brian

Scope of anchor warp can be 5 times depth of water.

Some of the deeper areas inshore are over 30 metres, offshore about 50

so 200 metres would about cover that.

if you were not going so far you could reduce a little but the dry weight of 50m of 10mm is not a lot.

I have always carried a full coil 220m

Hpe that helps

Thanks Charlie/Terry

It's a 5kg Bruce, I think I'll leave it as 200m and see how I get on.

I also carry a couple of 2kg bruce anchors, I used to use these when flounder fishing in the harbour, I'd put one out the back to stop the boat swinging.

There may be some logic to cutting your 200m in half, and connecting the spare bit to an emergency anchor (a proper one though!!), You can always use the spare warp on the odd occasion you are over deeper water. I wouldnt feel safe without a spare anchor, having lost one previously.

I might increase the amount of spare warp carried to 150m though when I could, as without any power and 12m offshore, you would drift a long way either right or left without getting into any shallower water.

BTW, braid isnt the best anchor line - it may not stretch enough, with the result of breaking the anchor out in a rough sea.

I disagree with that entirely.

Braid is lovely to use, soft on your hands, coils beautifully.

You don't need it to stretch at all as it will be the length of chain that offers the cushion between the boat and the anchor.

A long enough length of chain will correctly drag the anchor in (horizontally) to the sea bed and also only the end attached to the warp will rise and fall with the waves leaving the section shackled to the anchor simply giving some horizontal pull.

whilst braid is nice to use personaly being a small boat owner i prefer to use nylon it has a greater dampening effect so that stress created every time you go over a wave isn't dumped into your deck hardware and then obviously your deck.I think if you rely on a longer lenght of chain as a dampener whilst im sure this will work fine, personaly i dont think you can beat the dampening effect of a nice long warp. Especially if youv'e got a small boat with light duty bollards fastned to thin fibre glass, you need that extra cushion. Also i would imagine that chain lifting up and down would make a noise and it may spook the fish?i expect not, but who knows?Thats my opinion for what its worth but i suppose it'll come down to personal preference, myself i would'nt want the cost of a great lengh of braid blink.gif cheers,Rob.

Multiplaitt or octiplait are the best warps to use as they are nice and soft, have plenty of stretch and coil beautifully. The only downside is the cost of the stuff.

Chain is a must with whatever warp you decide to use it has three functions the first is to hold the stem of the anchor down so your flukes (or whatever) have a direct full along the sea bed therefore helping your anchor to set, 2 is to assist in cushioning the jerks/snatch that will happen on the anchor so helping it to stay held and 3 to stop chafe to your warp.

With a decent rope and chain anchoring set up you will need less scope than using rope that doesn't stretch or inadequate chain. The benefit of a better anchor set up will be noticed more the deeper you try and anchor.

On AWOL I have a 7 kilo Bruce main anchor with 140 metres of 12mm multiplait and 10 metres of chain. Rarely is there a problem with the anchor holding.

Deck hardware should not be a problem so long as a decent backing plate has been fitted behind your anchor post/cleat.

Thanks for the interesting tips. I too have a 5kg bruce anchor, with i think, it was 10 meters of 8 mm galv chain, 80meters of 14mm nylon, at least thats what it measures with the vernier, and my own rotten bottom set up which iv'e tested and works a treat. In fact the setup has been used in about 18 mtrs of water in a good tide and iv,e had my eye on other boats to see if ive been draging my anchor but she does'nt budge.Mind you i dont care what new fangled anchors come on the market these anchors are certainly one of the best small boat anchors around. If my warp doesn't wear well or i experience any other problems i may consider other cordage at the time,or in other words i'll learn the hard way, again blink.gif oh and just to add i took the liberty of reinforcing the deck under my bollards but at the time i thought im just putting the stress somewhere else? anyhow at least if i need to pull my anchor out i can put a little more pressure on than perhaps i might have before. cheers wink.gif Rob.

One last point,

when driving the anchor out in a big sea, I find it easier to let out a little more scope if you are in shallow water, so when you are going slower than normal there is some nice stretch in the rope. The Anchor comes out softly without a big bang, or the front of the boat being pulled off course.

I'm sure that for most of our anchoring i.e short duration then pre-stretched or non stretch is OK, but Nylon is the preferred material of Yachties who have to anchor overnight, with alot more mass hanging off the anchor.

I've got anchor plait as well - its millionaires prices but lovely stuff.
