Zzippy Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 I have just got my new fishfinder/gps/chartplotter.Its A Huminbird 587ci.It has the basic maps on it but was wondering weather the Navionics Gold charts would be better?.I have looked on all sorts of web sites and you can get a small area gold chart for Quote
plaicemat Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 I think you'll find that most of us who use Navionics have the Gold or Platinum charts. I think they are great and have used them in two machines so far. I have the UK chart as I travel to other places to fish. Terry. Quote
Gazza Posted October 10, 2009 Report Posted October 10, 2009 Mark, i think what your after is which one will give you more chart information such as tidal flows, tide times of different ports etc. I can't tell you which chart is the best for that information because I'm on a different Chart system to you.............but i bet there's a few on here who can tell you the benifits between the two different charts. Just ask the right questions and wait Gary Quote
Jim Posted October 10, 2009 Report Posted October 10, 2009 Mark, I have a lowrance GPS. I bought a " Nautic Path " north - west europe card about a year ago from Piplers in Poole. It was just shy of a ton. I don't really know much about them, but it does seem to contain a lot of detail and seems very accurate when I zoom in. I think it shows all of Britain and a lot of the Med. I expect someone will correct any errors I have made. Jim Quote
pirky Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Mark I have the Navionics GOLD 28XG UK and N Ire.....covers IRELAND & HOLLAND From United Kingdom to Holland. United Kingdom, Ireland, English Channel, Belgium and The Netherlands. I have a portable RAYCHART 400......largest handheld I could get 'cause I have no security on my small boat. I dont know where you live but you are welcome to have a look and judge for yourself if it is what you want ( I am in Ringwood).......I have no real experience in these things to advise. Alternatively get a demo from Marine Electronics in Poole.....OR one of the lads in the club on their mooring....I am sure there will be loads only too happy to assist. PM me if you want to have a look at the one I purchased ( gotta be so careful how you say things on this forum with Jim and Martin about) ha ha !! Good luck Dave Quote
Jim Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Dave, It's Rob Francis that's the Demon Quoter. ( When he's not otherwise engaged as Master of the Molds ) Jim Quote
great white Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Hi I have used Navionics gold on my last two sets I like the fact it shows details as they are shown on the charts, same colours and symbols. Currently I have the 28xg as it covers a wide area, but it still holds plenty of detail when zoomed right in. I have used it over a big section of our Club waters and its good for all, and it shows tides and currents which is great when away from areas you know well. I have no idea how far you travel, but that chart will probably cover it. Charlie Quote
Zzippy Posted October 11, 2009 Author Report Posted October 11, 2009 Thanks for the input lads. I will get a card for it at a later date.(After xmas) but till then I will just study my Blue Charts on the pc and get the co-ordinates then enter it into the Gps. It would be nice to have that sort of info whilst I am fishing though. Charlie,..We travel round a fair bit,Cornwal,Wales and the East coast, but I want it really for our local areas and the Isle of wight marks. I have also got a tidal programme on my PC which I use. Dave. Thanks for the offer,I will take you up on that in a few weeks if thats ok with you. I have just fitted my mounting bracket for the F/F today. It took a bit of working out as we are limited on the kayak and I didnt want it to get in the way. So this is how I overcame the problem. I went down the front cup holder route and used Fascia board instead of chopping board. Here is what I did. Cut a load of disc's out of the fascia board and drilled a hole all the way through them to thread the power/transducer cable. Also drill a hole through the bottom of the cup holder. Then cut 2 bits of fascia and bolt the mounting bracket on and cut round it to tidy up. Then drop the disc's into the cup holder 1 at a time and seal each one with sikaflex plus fill the hole with the cables running through. Finally screw a 6" screw all the way through the disc's and through the bottom of the cup holder(backing plate on the underneath of cupholder). Then leave to set. Gone down the Sikaflex route to fit the transducer. All thats left to do is test it ;D Quote
Jim Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Good post Mark, I should think there will be a lot of kayakers waiting to hear how it performs. Well Done. Quote
