mike02380
Hi, I am looking to kit my orkney 520 out with some rod holders, I do not like those cheapy plastic ones, they are fiddly and don't look very robust, what rod holders can people recommend? I like the flush fit tube style holders but they would have to go on the rear seats and would sacrifice space inside the lockers, I'm also not sure they would spread the lines enough when 4 rods are being used, Many Thanks
Wedger
I would say that for most of the inshore use you would still get away with the Berkley drop in rod holders as IMHO they are more ajustable than any other and still fairly strong. Ecellent for multi rod fishing for bream plaice flounder whiting winter cod etc. They come off easily for storage and when not in use to save clutter. Important on small craft . If I had the choice from scratch I would have some more robust stainless ones as well for offshore use, but I wouldn't give up the Berkley's. Mine are 10 years old and still good, tranfered from my last boat. Simply stored below deck out of UV when not in use. The flush mounted ones are great for rods when underway but I think most would give too steep an angle for effective bottom fishing at anchor. Rail mounted stainless adjusables I would use, cabin top rocket launcher wrack I would use. Edited October 12, 2009 by Wedger
dicky
we have rail mounted "down east" rod holders on ours. not cheap but will last for ever. wouldn't trust a rod in them when underway though but never had a rod come out accidently when fishing. Paul D
Mike, Didn't realise you now have an Orkney 520 - I am sure you will have fun with her. Re: Rod holders I assume you have siderails fitted ? I have stainless steel rod holders attached to the rails at the front and the berkeley adjustable ones at the rear. Also have drainpipe holders fitted to the bottom of the seats at the rear which are fine for holding rods whilst under way. ( Just buy some drainpipe and cut to suit ) . The adjustable plastic holders have been fine but I had to cut down the clamp to make think enough to grip the handrail tightly.

Gazza
Mike, Don't buy stainless steel unless you are 100% sure they are '316' marine grade unless you like rust marks all over your gunwales..... Gary
Gazza
Jim, do you think someone could make up some adjustable rod holders for side rails? they would have to move to different angles etc ? I would certainly be interested in some if they came out to the right design Gary

Sinbad
Mike, I've used the Berkley ones for many years on a strikeliner, and now my Orkney - but I prefer to put the butt on the floor and use the rail mounted V rests (breakaway type) - its a personal choice. You can mount the berkley ones on the rail if needed with the u clamp. Ive got my holders mounted vertically on the inwhales - but these are coming off in the winter (i.e shortly) so will be available FOC. If interested PM me. Jim
Gary, You can buy the plastic ones for about 12 quid each. If you have something a bit special in mind, can you email some sort of rough sketch? I'll try to knock up a 3D model and send you photos. Oops ! looks like one for Rob Francis Jim
Gazza
Jim, got an exact model here you could use, prefer stainless steel though........no plastic or rubber models for me thankyou very much if you want to borrow the 'model'for a look we'll sort somethig out. perhaps if others are interested in some they could voice their opinions preferences. or get an idea how many to make Gary

gaffa
Guys I have a chromed brass /stainless steel adjustable rail mount as per http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rail-Mount-Rod-Holde...id=p3286.c0.m14 or, for same price http://www.nautequipe.co.uk/p2078/Chrome-O...oduct_info.html I got mine from nautequipe (stevetheboat)but they dont seem to have them in stock currently Its a brilliant piece of kit adjustable in 10degree( increments and built like a brick...house I only have one and use it as a Flag mast support cum Black Ball mast support its mounted on the crossrail over the roof of my cabin. If I was going to permanently fit rail mount rod holders (and I had the money ) these would be the bad boys I would use Peteg
great white
I was looking for a picture that shows the stainless upright ones on the front of my engine box. I fitted these as an alternative to the plastic ones they were not too dear and are 316 stainless. the centre one now holds the bait table support leg. Last year I also fitted two at an angle on the back of my bench seats, these are ideal for putting nets in or long rods as outriggers LOL I found this one of Dan It also shows the breakaway rests on the rails that prove usefull Charlie
