Adam F
Well, as most of you know, the Weymouth trail-a-way as cancelled as Potland forecast was F4-5 SW. Mavericjk and BW decided instaed to take advantage of the weather window (compared to late) and have a bash from Poole. We launched at 9am, and head out to the Spoil Grounds, passing Ow Much on the way. Mackeral were impossible with Alan (whippet - my crew) and I taking just 3 fish in 1 hours feathering!!!. Luckily we had a few squid and eels aboard. We settled near one of Pete Snr's 'Secret' Blonde ray marks, as both Alan and myself had never caught a blonde. Sport was pretty consistent with me taking my 1st Blonde at 3/4lb 1st cast, and then Alan following it up with another of the same size. I then had a 12lber, which made my day, followed by another 3/4lber. A surprize bass completed the days catch. The weather stayed reasonable, with it gusting 4/5 SW at the end, so we came back in about 5pm. An enjoyable day! - Thanks to Alan for the company, thanks to Pete for the mark (shall guard it with my life!!) Looks like it could be the last trip for a while - Gale 8's forecast this week! Bob F
Am I jealous or what? Beats my best blonde, Adam. Good on yer!
great white
Hi Adam Well done allways nice to get among the Blondes. We had a day of mixed fortunes most of it was on the drift for Bass with a short anchor out near your tope mark for a ray. No luck with the ray but we had 7 bass, including a new PB for Daniel of 4lb 2oz. Nice to be afloat again on somthing smaller than the condor ferry. But it got a bit choppy at the end so we were not surprised to see you join us at old Harry. Tight lines Charlie
Paul D
Got out from Lymington with Les as crew and the water started off flat calm. Managed to catch 5 mackeral ( one of which was a very good size ) in 5 drifts !! Headed off for the Smoothhound mark and managed to catch a number of small bream - they were ripping though our baits. Fed up with small bream moved up to a mark near the Beaulieu river. Les managed a doggie there but the weed was horrendous. Wind was picking up all the time so moved back to the original mark ( we hoped the weed would be less there ). Less weed but fish seemed to have disappeared as well. Getting choppier so we called it a day. Had a slight "mishap" when retrieving the boat. powered the boat from the pontoon towards the trailer and cut the engine before I reached the trailer. Got on the front of the boat and lowered myself into the water to the ground, expect the water was somewhat deeper than I thought , so had to hang onto the boat until it drifted a bit further. Thankfully my feet touched the ground second attempt and the water was 1 inch from the top of my waders. Shant be doing that again in a hurry. The fishing was poor but the company was good and it was good to get out.
Bob F
Picture the scene...man poised ballerina-like on tippy toes with water up to the top of his test waders, lungs fully inhaled, and preying like mad that no one disturbs the water...goes by the name of King Canute! duncan
Phaeton got out Saturday too but seemed to miss all you guys somehow? We were hoping to drift for bass so collected a few hundred eels (needles) off Hook and headed West. Drifting between St Albans and Durston on the flood we saw no action at all over 10 or so drifts (other than a pretty big SW swell) and were just moving onto St Albans ledge for the brief slack when we responded to a call from Portland and ran into dancing ledge. One helicopter, One police rib, Swanage LB and an official looking jetski later, not to mention what looked like a salvage specialist (offshore25 based) and the guys in the helicopter, boats under tow and we are released to go back to fishing. We drifted around along the picking up the odd pollack, wrasse and bass (well one of them...) when the wrong rod - not mine- bent double into something altogether better. Everything screamed 'good bass', including Dave!, but 10 minutes later it turned out to be a massive Ballan. Beautifuly coloured fish that weighed in at 5lb 4oz. Unfortunately I didn't have a camera, but Dave's thoughts of taking it back and getting it weighed properly lasted only a few seconds ....... As it only came up from 28ft, and very slowly, it went back happily enough (for me to go and catch again later!) One of the prettist fish I have seen for a long time. Paul J
Went out in Chrischurch harbour and soon found out that the repair i had done on the hull of my dingy had failed! Water coming in fast after 50yds, a quick turn and back to the slip.- It's 6:30am, the sun's shinning, the tides perfect, and i'm screwed. I parked the boat and went to a shore mark in the harbour. 10 minutes later i'm hooked up to a good Bass which took my freelined Mackeral which was split right down the middle. After letting it run on the rachet for a second, i set the circle hook solid and it was game on!. I turned the fish but it's next run broke me . I can only think that the ball weight had weaked the line, cause i had the rig on for a couple of trips. It was a day of almost, but not quite Paul J
duncan
They were trawled Adam - our's was out of commission due to a broken (completely messed up) chain and we had made arrangements over a few beers the night before..............as you do! Trawl should be fixed soon. Livebait well worked pretty well (whoops) but need to put a mesh over the water inlet 'cos the stupid eels swim up the inlet pipe jamming it full at times) and right into the damm pump as well - not easy to get out and a lid of soom sort as we lost some (er many actually) when we ran off to investigate the small craft in peril at 30knots
Bob F
Dave, was that the last trip before the new toy arrives? Paul, and I was going to ask you for a trip in your dinghy...glad you did the shake down trial first. Shame about that lost bass. Was it from the same spot that you got your other big bass? Bob F.
