I agree with Dave...but it's been a worsening situation with the flounders for a few years. I think it's about poor spawning / recruitment....possibily something has changed where they spawn in Lyme Bay. Evidence, other than the poor catches, is seen in the Summer months. It used to be the case that when I used to launch at Mudeford [and the water is clear in Summer], there would be lots of little postage stamp size flatties zipping about as you paddled in the shallows....now you just see the odd one or two. Alun.

Now that Diane has retired and wants to come out on the boat, I'm thinking about selling MegaByte and buying something with a bit more shelter. Maybe an Arvor 18 or a Quicksilver.

Without going on for hour or two Doombar now sits in the driveway . The trip to get her from deepest ,darkest Wales was eventful , Gummage came along for a nice few hours in the most horrendous weather . Snow storms, torrential rain from dawn to dusk, it had caught out a few motorists ( including a traffic copper who managed to aqua plane stuffing his car into the Armco ) Towing a 20ft boat on a big trailer is a litter demanding , in those conditions it was horrendous . My only aim for this year is to get her on the water , all the pretty stuff can wait . Inspection so far is that I have made a very wise purchase ,This boat has had a huge amount of pounds thrown at it .I will attempt to find out more as this has been a professional build , it really is that good.. The main thing of is the Big Yamaha , removing the hood it looks like new , I have been informed these engines could be the toughest engine ever to go on a boat . I have made a wise decision to take it to a professional for a full service (Rivershack ) he will also go over all the wiring because that's the bit I think I've always found a struggle . Loads of stuff going on in the few short hours I have , lighting fitted up driveway so work will can progress after dark . Im still waiting for that big kick in the ass , have I actually managed to do ok ?

I remember fishing up near the stakes at the start of the Frome many years ago when up popped a seal about 150 ft from the boat, I thought that would be the end of the fishing or if we did get one the seal would be sure to have it when we reeled it in. But we ended up catching 68 flounders that day and the seal never caused us any problems. I know people are blaming the nets and the seals for lack of flounders but I think it is just a bad year the same as the cod these happen from time to time. The plaice fishing as been very good for the last couple of years after many poor years.

Met up with Martin & Dean just before 8 at Cobb's. Caught the 8:30 bridge and headed out to check the sea state. A lumpy sea made the decision for us: Don't go too far out ! ! We are all just getting over our Christmas colds and the lumpy sea made me feel quite "iffy" First mark produced: Conger, Doggies, Pout & Whiting all of which were small. Martin hooked something quite playful but it got off before we clapped eyes on it. We moved to another mark ( a top secret one ) Martin & Dean thought it could be quite good for the Bream later in the year but today it produced some quite big Congers followed by Doggies, Pout, Whiting. It went quiet there and we moved to a mark we fished last time out which had produced some whiting. Well we found where all the babies were hiding ! ! ! We enjoyed listening on the radio to Foxy Fisher & Marichelle playing Hide & Seek and discussing distances & lengths. They did sound as though they were catching fish though. A big thank you to Martin & Dean for taking me out & thanks to Dean for my bacon & black pudding lunch & coffees. Jim
