So he does exist! and he even made it home again! went to lock out of sovereign at 6.30 to be told the locks had broken and they were fixing them! (at least it allowed me a proper breaky) the first 50 odd miles to selsey was its usual mind numing killer boredom routine, the solent ok apart from the wake of a container ship- i did a tom bettle and hit the roof. interesting times pointing your boat at old harry at 23 knots and seeing nothing when it was only a mile or so away- i knew it was there cos the radar told me so looking forward to meeting old and new friends greg

many thanks for that martin forecast is looking good for getting down at the tail end of the week, i will spend the week looking forward to seeing the view across the harbour again and catching a few suppers will wait to see how the forecast changes over the next few days to time the trip places for crew still up for grabs greg

folks those who know the history of my attempts to fish poole and furthur afield will know that i am not planning or looking forward to coming down so the jinx dont have time to plan its mischief, however on the basis that i am not planning to be in poole for the bank holiday weekend is there anyone who wants a buddy boat or who wants to go fish a certain spot but needs a boat to do it who would like a trip? no dates fixed yet so can be flexible all the best greg
-
nope- why would i want to do that!
-
that bit of stainless on the roof is crying out for some goodies to be attached is she/ you going to be in alderney?

-
well pleased for you, had mine out last weekend and coming home thought, what a nice boat to be playing with, i hope you get to feel the same very quickly. all the best greg (and of course the Mrs Sea! ps: soon to be in a water near you (i hope)

is that the crux of the matter? yachts down at 5 6 or 8 knots for long passages can live with the risk and adapt accordingly boats at 15 20 25 and 30 knots it is more of an issue, as an example there were 60+ nets laid off sovereign harbour last weekend and the usual thing there marked with a washing up bottle you dont see at speed until they are within a min or so

in answer to your qustion, No, they are to dangerous there is far to much stuff out there to miss and fishing solo most of the time steering helps me to keep my rule that i dont leave the cabin when motoring

nige as an owner of a very expensive new hatch cut in the deck some words of advice/ experience. i broke down in 2008 and was advised it was "THE BUG" did the diesel maintenance course, replaced filters frequently normally if there was a saturday in the month, and religously treated all incoming fuel with an additive - marine 16 which i think was the pbo winner of a test. i also had the fuel polished after the initial problem and whilst not present while it was done a berth neighbour saw a load of gunk coming out and being taken away. all well and good fast forward to 2011 and breakdowns again. in short the bottom of the tank (we eventually stuck a camera down) was covered in sand / rice like particles which when disturbed were not blocking the filters- as bug is supposed to, but were blocking the pipes and junctions in the filter body itself, the reason why when i changed the filter cartridge with the spares carried the problem was not solved. i will never no where/ when this came from or why but it does mean that if you do go the polishing route you have to make sure you get to the bottom of the tank- and mine has three bafffles which presumably meant that the original polishing company had no chance of doing that as the only access then was thro the fuel sender access polish yes but it does not gaurentee problem free boating oh and i am now very familar with stripping down the off engine fuel system at sea! greg ps when we cut into the tank and removed the remaining fuel it was polished, when it went back in after the tank was cleaned, it was done again. i shall be mighty peeved if this happens again!

I'll try and catch one for you Ad, I will just leave the rod and wind you one in at the end of a drift! and just in case anyone is unsure i am not planning to catch anything so i can not put it on the ice i am not planning to cart across the channel!
-
i am not doing any planning because i dont want to go , i have not preped the boat or tested it or filled it with 100 gallons of engine juice i have not got new rods and reels and certainly wont be planning on moving the boat to poole soon so i cant be ready to go, with all this lack of planning no one (or thing) can possibly have noticed i am not planning it so it cant mess it up, Can it?

found out yesterday afternoon that the yard had not done my trim tab anodes as requested. grabbed new before the shop shut and went to do them this morning, stainless bolts into aluminum anodes which had corroded solid - to the point that you could not get the allen key in! half an hour to find some electrikery then half an hour upside down with angle grinder, safety glasses misted up, in wind and rain down the back of the neck to get the old ones off, 2 mins to get the new on, cut em off and replace. boats who would have em! good luck and hope it goes better than the above I'm confused - it is normal to use stainless bolts to secure anodes (aluminium or zinc) to steel; do I take it your trim tabs are aluminium (which would make sense re the bolts but less with regard to the anodes ) duncan i dont pretend to understand the details but the boat yard told me to use aluminium because that was what the anodes on the drive were made from- and they are presumably (looking at their placing and shapes) tailor made by Yamaha for the leg

the way my wife cooks i would never ever let my sock near her

i know i dont have the knowledge of others on here but when i got the boat i stuck 220 m rope plus chain on the winch up front delighted to have a winch to do the work. Not. The old anchor ect came off the front with maybe 100m of rope and chain went to the side and has been happily alderney ringed since. this weekend the 220 m is coming out of the locker from where it has remained for years; that will now be alderney ringed from the side and the original set is going back in the locker. winch pah! note: some strong bow fittings and additional well sited big side cleats dont half help
