Hello All , I managed to take some voltage readings this morning , the engine was fired up on the drive with the flush muffs on . Engine off 12.51 volts Tick over 1100 rpm 13.6 volts 2500 rpm 15.1 volts 4500 rpm 16.1 volts I think it looks as though my voltage regulator is knackered , does anyone else agree ? Thanks again for the help . Andy

Thanks Coddy , By the look of it the ff has no volt meter function on it , but i will have a play around with it next time i'm out . Andy .

Thanks Bob , The engine is a 1989 25hp Yamaha 2 stroke , she's getting on a bit but seems to plod on nicely all the same . There is no other charging kit on the boat . I will go on the scrounge for a volt meter and see what shows up . In fact i will go on the scrounge now . Charlie Annear !! give us a go with your volt meter me old mate . Thanks again all , for your help . Andy .

Hello Bob , Yes it is definately excessive voltage written in the bottom left hand side of the display , and the radio emits a loud beeping , i have scoured the manual as well and can't find anything related to this problem . I don't think it is a low voltage problem cos i can sit all day at anchor with fish finder and radio on and they both work fine and engine starts ok . Paul J's suggestion makes sense , if the voltage regulator on the engine is iffy i presume the more welly you give the engine the more voltage is sent to the battery and this is transferred on up to the radio , i think . I'm not that good with electrical things so i might have that last bit all wrong . Andy

Hello All , I keep getting an Excessive voltage alarm on my Navman 7100 dsc vhf radio when i have been running the engine harder than normal . Ploding round the harbour etc it works fine but when i give it a bit of welly after about 5 mins the alarm starts beeping . When the engine is throttled back and i turn radio off and on again it all works fine , Can any of you Electrical experts point me in the right direction please . The power to the radio runs straight from the battery to a fused switch box , and there is only one batttery on the boat . All fuses remain intact . At speed I also lose any signal from my fish finder as well , it's a hummingbird wide 100 , not sure if the two are related or the fish finder problem is one that has been discussed on another thread on the site . Any help will be greatly appreciated . Andy

Luverley fish Rich , Don't suppose you could give me a clue to where you caught it , I'm new to this boat fishing lark and need all the help i can get . Fishing in the harbour is about my limit at the moment so any clues would be appreciated . Andy

Had a really good time , eventually . I managed to get her indoors out in the boat for the first time and wanted to make a good impression so made sure boat etc was well prepared before the off , or so i thought . Towed boat down to baiter without a hitch ( no pun intended ) which was my first time towing so i was feeling rather pleased with myself as we rolled the boat off into the water , so far so good . The FPO ( can someone please tell me what that means ) was sat there all regal like until she spotted my new VHF radio , 20 questions followed , price etc , what about my new kitchen , i'm sure most of you have the ear bashing regarding toys , sorry , vital pieces of communication equipment , as i told her . Started to prime the fuel and managed to spray petrol up her arm , then realised that the connection on my new 5 gallon tank was buggered , quickly switched to the old 3 gallon tank which only had about a 2 gallons in it . Good start , possibly going round to studland and only 2 gallons of useable petrol , so its off to the fuel barge , called up Maverick on the radio and told him the situation , immediately followed by " ark at you , Maverick Maverick Maverick , what do you sound like , thats all you bought thing for to sound important " . Bless her ! On arrival at the fuel barge explained the situation and the best they could do was fill up the 3 gallon tank and sell me a 2 gallon spare can full of fuel , very reasonable too , i don't think , 3 gallons of petrol and a cheapo plastic can

Hello Tom , Most dates ok by me except 11th to 18th of june where i will be doing best part of bugger all for the week on a Greek beach , apart from drinking and watching the football that is. Pugwash , I like the idea of synchronised Orkneys , we could do the opening title bit to Miami Vice , where the two power boats are bombing along to the title music . I think they actually used strikeliners for those shots . Obviously Tom , majority rules so if most can make it while i'm away so be it , Andy

Hello Tom , Count me in for the photo shoot as well please . The very very close bit worries me a bit , i'm still a novice and i may end up a bit closer than you think Also the high speed and wave jumping , not sure if an Orkney Strikeliner comes into that category , but i will have a bloody good go . Andy

Evening All , We've been having a bit of trouble with our Yamaha 703 remote control unit , and on closer inspection we think the cables that control the throttle and gear selection are on their last legs . I have contacted a Yamaha main dealer and have been quoted

Do you think standing on a four foot bit of scaffold pipe on the end of my tyre spanner , too many pounds per newton squared then ? I mean you don't want the buggers to rattle loose do ya ! sniff .

Hello All , We have recently fitted brand new suspension units , hubs etc , to our Bramber trailer , and to my surprise i came home from work today to find two of the studs that the wheels locate on , lying on my drive , with the nuts still screwed on . They have both sheared off halfway along the stud . It can't be from over use as we have not moved the trailer in the last three weeks since we replaced the units . Which is just as well , could have been a bit messy had they gone while actually towing the boat . I have telephoned Towsure in Southampton , who supplied the units , and they are sending replacement studs , but i do not have much confidence in the what they will send me . I just hope the rest of the units are not of the same quality . Does anyone know where i can get a good quality replacement set of studs from ? Sending the units back and buying from elsewhere is not an option as Towsure were the only place i could find that do the suspension units to fit my trailer . Bramber trailers changed hands a few years ago and subsequently they have changed all there range and surprise surprise none of their new gear is compatable with the older stuff . Andy

A Very religious man was walking along the beach one day when suddenly the clouds parted and a loud voice said , "My son , this is God speaking , You are one of my most loyal subjects and for your loyalty i will grant you one wish of your choice , what will it be ?" The man replied , " My Lord that is easy , for i am in love with the Greek Island of Corfu , so my wish would be for you to build me a bridge so i can drive there when ever i want ." God replied , " My son , the resources needed to build a bridge of that magnitude would almost bring the planet to it's knees which would not bode well for the future of mankind , please make another wish ." The man thinks for a while then says , " Ok my lord , my wish is that you let me understand how a women's mind works ." God replied , " How many lanes do you want on your bridge , two or four ? "

Evening All, My brother told me a story the other day and i wondered if anyone in the club has had this problem , or if everyone knows about it . Basically , he was out for a run in his boat when an alarm buzzer went off in his engine compartment . As he lifted the hatch he realised he was in the poo as the engine bay was filling up with water rapidly , which is not the best thing to happen while your at sea , with no vhf either . Luckily for him he had not long overtaken a fishing boat who by this time had caught him up and could see the problem unfolding in front off him . Seeing that he had no radio on board , the fishing boat radioed the life boat for help . The Fishing boat then offered to tow my brothers boat back to the harbour due to the time it would take the lifeboat to get to them , my brother accepted and they set back towards the harbour . With the help of one of the crew he managed to solve the leak problem , apparently the doofer valve had become disconnected from the gromet flange adaptor coupling switch thing . Anyway , about halfway back to the harbour the lifeboat appeared and took over the towing , allowing the fishing boat to get back to work . Getting to the point off my post at last . One of the life boat crew asked my brother what agreement he had made with the fishing boat , for the tow back to harbour , and seeing the blank expression on his face proceeded to tell him that you should always make an agreement with any boat , RNLI excluded , that takes you in tow should you have an engine failure etc . It has something to do with salvage rights and he said the fishing boat owners would have been able to take his boat and there was nothing he could do about it .

Charlie , Give Curtis Marine Insurance a try , they insured Slipalong with Haven Knox Johnston and were really easy to deal with . 01752 485090 or email info@curtismarine.co.uk Andy

HI EVERYONE , THIS SUNDAY I AM DOING MY VHF COURSE SO HOPEFULLY IF ALL GOES WELL I WILL BE IN THE MARKET FOR A VHF RADIO OF SOME KIND . I AM NEW TO BOATING SO YOUR HELP WILL GO A LONG WAY IN HELPING ME MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION . AS FAR AS I KNOW THERE ARE TWO TYPES , FIXED AND HANDHELD , WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE USE ? AND WHY ? APART FROM OUTPUT POWER DOES THE FIXED TYPE HAVE MORE ADVANTAGES OVER THE HAND HELD TYPE OR VICE VERSA ? WILL I NEED THE EXTRA OUTPUT AS I ONLY HAVE AN ORKNEY STRIKELINER WITH A 25 YAM AND CANNOT SEE ME REACHING OUT THAT FAR FROM LAND LIKE SOME OF THE MEMBERS WITH MORE MODERN FASTER BOATS . OR COULD A BOAT OF MY SIZE GO OUT FURTHER ? ARE THERE ANY MEMBERS WITH BOATS MY SIZE THAT VENTURE FURTHER OUT ? AND WHAT ABOUT SECURITY ARE THE FIXED ONES EASY TO REMOVE ? AS I MAY BE USING A SWING MOORING THROUGH THE SUMMER AND I WOULD NOT BE TOO HAPPY TO FIND SOMEONE HAS PINCHED IT . HOPEFULLY MOST OF YOU HAVE BEEN THROUGH THIS SENARIO AND HAVE FOUND THE BEST SOLUTION AND I WOULD BE GREATFULL IF YOU PASS ON YOUR FINDINGS THANKS CREZZ

Hi everyone , I am a new club member writing my first report , so please forgive the quality , me and my english teachers at school never did see things the same way . Arrived at baiter 9-30 and parked next to an Orkney 520 getting ready to go , spent the next 10 mins drooling and wishing i'd saved my pennies instead of investing them in licenced premises . We ready'd Slipalong ( Our Orkney Strikeliner ) for launching and followed the 520 down the slipway This is our first boat so still a bit green in lots of area's of boating ,. The tide was right out and we had to tip the boat off the trailer right on the end of the slip , by the 10 knot signs. Good job the 520 went first , we would have walked it right off the end off the slip . I volunteered to hold the boat while my father in law pulled the trailer all the way back to the car park , i dont think he was too impressed . It was about this time i realised my new Ron Thompson waders had sprung a leak , cosmic , wet bloody feet for the rest of the day , cheap crap ! . Decided to see if the engine would start as it broke down on us last time out , eventually it come to life although a bit lumpy on tick over . Eventually old bob came back down the slip looking like he'd just run the london marathon , i asked him what took him so long , something off was his reply . Heading out we looked across towards Fishermans dock and could see The Prodigy pulling up a mooring so decided to pull up nearby and try our luck . Fished for about an hour without a sniff so decided to move in a bit closer to the shore . Again nothing , Only consalation was that no one else was catching either . Fished up to high water and not a single bite , again . Decided to call it a day and have a run through to holes bay . As we moved off Gary shouted at us to come alongside The Prodigy , brave man ! with me at the helm . After a bit of coaching we tied up and climbed on board . Had a quick chat and pushed off towards holes bay , my parting words to Gary were i dont want any bloody photo messages of fish after we had gone , we cruised under the bridge and out into the bay , sad but that was the first time i've ever done that , turned round and give the motor a good blast up through the main channel . 35 knots !!!!!! not bad for a 25 yam . And then back to the slip . wet feet time again , bloody Ron Thompson , boat returned to trailer first time and home for a wash down and a cup of tea . 2 hours later my mobile rings . multimedia message received . 2 nice size flounders . Prodigy 2 Slipalong 0
