  1. Tom, if you nab a boat from work, and fancy a few hours out I'd love to join you. Colin cancelled our trip out of weymouth yesterday, although I was down in the town at Billy's servicing reels, and at 1100 it looked well fishable, although the swell was building. Rich
  2. Adam, I'm up for that one too, I have been chatting to Reg, the guy who has just joined the club, from that far away place called Newcastle. He has sowed the seed about thwir club trailaway for skate, although we hadnt discussed dates etc. Rich
  3. All I can hear on this antiquated machine is, "Das hier ist mein sector"......I really should get rid of this gerbil powered dial up and invest in Broad Band! Rich
  4. Our Trip was cancelled last night, and Colin doesnt look towards going out till next week!! Looks like were rig making this weekend! Rich
  5. Don't you just love Mikeys anecdotes!!! He's got plenty more tucked away, from way back when men were men and women were glad of it!!!! Rich
  6. Where can one purchase said rocket launcher?? Sounds ace fun!!! Lazy Arborists, or those with pose embedded inside, are using catapults and mono, with a small marble sized weight for launching over a tree, taking the climbing line to the very top of the canopy, I guess this could/is used in boating circles for extreme distance. I still dissagree with the monkey fist stuff, the extra weight is added by turns around the loop, and neat coiling assists line flow. Also, is difficult getting hold of monkeys these days with all these spotty oiks lobbying the use of monkeys in cosmetic/medical science research. What the hell would they do when they catch mikey dispatching a colobus purely to stuff a ope down the soggy end of its wrist? No wonder Anita Roddick flogged body shop!!! Rich
  7. Mikey, would it help if I were to do some step by steps with piccies of specific splices for you, that way, we can bung them on here and they are there for all to see, also if I cock it up, thats something else that u can rib me for!!!! I'm more than happy to do stuff fromBack splicing Eye splicingshort splicing to basic seizings, braiding, chain sennets for example, different bindings like lashing or transom knots etc, I can cover carrying stowage and storing, loops hitches and bends. Seeing how popular Bobs annimated fishermans knots were, I'm more than happy to crack off some step by step pics of different boaty stuff, after all a picture speaks a thousand words, as opposed to Rich or Tom gabbling on in a million!!!!! Rich
  8. I think only Martins Rabbit may be bigger than Mark B's Rabbit now. Mark, if the weymouth trip is cancelled, did u fancy a trip out in the Harbour on Sunday?? Rich
  9. Mike, is there really a need for a Monkey head or a Turks fist or anything when throwing a rope?? If I'm lobbing a rope skywards to go over a lower limb of a tree, to assist climbing, all thats needed is to form a small ball at the end of the line, about three turns around the fist does this nicely, then wrap a few more turns of the standing line around this bunch of three turns, then coil enough rope after this ball to reach your intended target. A well coiled rope flows freely through the air, and is aimed far far more accurately. The joy of this is that should the rope snag, the bundle on the end is still free flowing and will unwrap itself, not snagging you can also stow the rope with a free running end. All my climbing ropes are stowed "Gasket coil" so should i put a turks head on the end, it is no longer free running. From a safety aspect, any ropes that snag are next to useless, as snagging needs to be undone prior to use. I dread to think what may have been the outcome should I not have hit the target first launch when Charlie came to Dave' and my rescue in the Swash after the engine died. Clean ropes, neat coiling and accurate throwing meant that the towing line hit Charlies deck first lob, saving valuable time when we were drifting towards the chop!!! Rich
  10. I doubt my Friday trip is going to go ahead, and the forecast states increasing saturday overnight, so I think the chances of us getting afloat is pretty near zilch. Rich
  11. Adam, get in the car and motor over to Cherbourg for a beer run. In the Quay area inside the port, is a shop equivalent to our chandleries over here, they sell all manner of pots at very competitive prices, the ferries are doing a day trip for

    Plaice

The benefit that the lonliner has over us rod and liners, is that his bait is left insitu untill the exact right time of tide when feeding is induced. You arent missing fish due to the bait being lifted through boredom or rebaiting. I have longlined down in Hythe by the Pier for flatties in winter with my father, the best tally we had then was 124 flounder, which fed us for ages. Ive taken Plaice Bass flounder, pout and Thornbacks on longlines from stone point on Lepe beach, laid at low tide recovered next low tide, Ive had rods in the water for the same duration of time and not caught anywhere near the same number of fish. The french use lengths of mono, tied to narrow sections of plywood abouut a foot long, place the boards on end on sand at low water, dig them in untill just the tip is showing, lay a baited hook on the sand, then cover the bait with a small pile of sand so the gulls dont knick it. These boards are staggered along the tide lines, in rows, thus giving baits a good spread. The down side of this, is that huge numbers of fish are caught, often immature Brill, and the buggers eat them!!!! Good system though I thought! Rich
  17. Thanks to all involved in the Dinner Dance, and my sincere appologies for my lateness, I hope I didnt offend. Venue was superb, and contrary to Adam and Rach's exoerience, although slightly overdone for my palate, my venison was very very tender. Sorry I had to scoot before I had chance to Catch Tom doing his gyratory bit on the dancefloor. Great to see so many members and partners enjoying the night. Top Leaflet Sam, I hope the mark will reflect effort put in. Rich
  18. Not quite half a mile deep!!!! Inform your pal tp mark his position on launching on the slip, and mark regularly along the harbour entrance, bearing in mind the fast cat berthing, RNLI launch areas etc. Steam west, marking each entrance to Portland Harbour, Chequers etc, for possible safe havens, keep watchfull eye on the horizon, 'cos you wont fail to see the Charters fishing the length of the Bank from now untill late Novemeber!!! It will be like a car park out there, then as Tom says, simply drift till you get a bite, mark......drift mark, then choose your spot. At slack water anchor up near one of the numerous bottom features be it mussel beds or small reefs, and tuck into the fishing. Tight lines, Rich
  19. Dan, our club Brream comp and that comp generally run together, so get bruv sorted, ie no girlie footie or weddings or anything else like that, and get fishing!!! Rich
  20. Only if youre not wearing velcro fastening trollies PJ, I snagged a five and half pounder the other day at Anthony's, cracking fish, went back into the carrier. Rich

Have fun Terrance, no breaking legs like our chutney ferret pal Dan.
  22. I'm really glad about the safety goggles bit, but I was saddened to see that they didnt mention the fairies at the bottom of the garden, or the fact that Mickey Mouse popped in for tea the week previous. They must think we were born yesterday!!! A bit of a home goal I'd say.......mmmm best whack that footnote in to save us getting sued!!!! Cynical old me!!
