  1. Mikey, I think Kam has hit the nail strategically square on the head regarding slipway position and location of RNLI launch sites. My angle on this one would be to perhaps lean a little more to the forthcoming Olympics, and the obvious increase in recreational boating that this event will provide, being staged so close to "our" home, (speaking as a non - resident of Poole!!!). If we can show the dramatic, and it has been dramatic, increase in the number of recreational craft on the water in general, and the increased income that the council can glean in parking of vehicles and trailers, the kick back for the council is there for as long as folk use a new slipway. If the slipway is pants, then they trail elsewhere and launch there, giving that specific council THEIR pennies. Coddies point of a millenium grant is well and just, but the number of organisations applying for such grants is immense, therefore the already stringent application rulings have got even tougher. My personal view on that angle is rather sceptical, I'm afraid. The way the club has grown over the past twelve months shows a couple of things really, despite the fact that the main tool employed to gain membership has been the fantastic website, it gives an indication of those in the catchment area willing to subscribe down a fishing club path. It also shows the power of the internet. Perhaps a site specifically lobbying for a new slipway in Poole Harbour is the way forward, you can show exactly how shallow a draught vessel must be launched there by pictures, which speak far louder than words, you can include all types of recreational boater who are likely to visit the site, pop a link on this site, and one would expect a serious number of hits, pop a petition for a new slipway on the site, and hey presto serious money is saved on postage lobbying, squillions of miles of foot pounding and hours of door knocking goes out of the window. With mentions on local radio, and something re safety on launching in the RNLI periodicals, you are reaching a massive catchment, way way outside Poole Harbour. Just my thoughts. Rich
  2. Hiya Andy, welcome to the forum, sit ringside and watch the fireworks.....I mean banter. Most of my charter fishing is from Lymo, although plenty out of Weymouth, and club trips out of Christchurch and Poole. Look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Enjoy the most visited fishing forum on the net. Rich
  3. Jack, just grab the door to door market researcher, who recently called at Mikey's gaff, feed them beans, place them aft, ask them to politely drop trollies, and touch toes..........hey presto!!!!!! Jet propulsion. Rich
  4. Charlie, Ive secured loan of more tube, so will beging ferrying it down either today or tomorrow. Rich
  5. As long as its donated to the club I cant see that as a problem Mikey!!!!! Rich
  6. Top tips Dan, I'd love a crack at carp or Rudd on fly gear, I bet they both go like trains!!! Can you use the floating maggot on a fly set up?? Are they hardy enough on the hook during the backcast?? Gordon, I've remembered the name of that large black lure, Ace of Spades, I used them to good effect on lakes in Ireland, they immitate a small fish. Despite all the new Pike flies we used on Friday, last, we didnt get a sniff!!!!!! With the storm forecast for today and tomorrow, I expect the River to be a tad higher and maybe a bit more coloured this weekend. Tight lines.......Rich PS. All these great tips should really go into the appropriate section of the forum, Ive never heard of that method of making maggots float, I used to use a small hyperdermic for bloodworms and maggots, when I was a boy before the war......Rodders!!!!!
  7. Tom, have you been in touch with Shytalk....Peter Russel?? As far as wrecks go...I think he is the guru with a superb knowledge of locations and methods. If you need crew for set up advice, and a shoulder watcher, I'm more than happy to vollunteer my services, I'm not experienced enough to set up drifts etc. Rich
  8. Well, not as many as last year, but still as enjoyable, with a few pike in the net to boot. Im glad you all managed to make it, and hope you all enjoyed the day, the weather was kind, the sausages tasty, and fishing ninety six rods on three metres of bank was a first for me.......quick lads, cast into the "Pike Pit". Im hoping that we can go this coming Sunday. Rich
  9. Gordon, fly fishing Lakes, is totally different to fly fishing rivers or streams, in that generally, the lures used imitate fish/small fry. A good all rounder is the "Appetizer" which is a white lure, with either orange or red wound into the body. Another good lure is a dark lure which immitates a minnow, forgot the name sorry!! Use a dropper a few feet above the lure on the point, which normally comprises of a small nymph, like an olive or a brighter type, maybe a fluero green. As you retrieve closer to the boat/bank, and lift the lure, a take can come on the dropper as it reaches the surface, immitating a hatch. Large lures like dog nobblers work well if the water is very coloured..........al horses for courses. On a chalk stream, like where we fished for pike, the purist approach is used, Dry fly......that is a lure floated on the surface with a floating line, and cast upstream, then re-cast as the lure comes in line with you along the river. Downstream fishing is a no no on these type of fisheries. If you are fishing a lake in the late afternoon or evening, the likelihood of a "Hatch" increases, as the water temp. is at it highest, so move from a wet fly or lure to a dry fly or emerger. The dry fly is dressed with a water reppelant, and water reppeling materials like deer hair are used in the tying. A waterproof dressing is sprayed onto the fly to assist floating. When you are ready to put a lsit together, give me a nudge, and I'll get the flies from the supplier I use, with a healthy 50% discount....so you can get twice as many to lose in the bankside vegetation when learning to cast..... Hope this helps, Rich
  10. No problem Kam, I'm pleased that you came, and enjoyed it. You can't guarantee fish, but the company was good. Rich
  11. Charlie............did I mention that scaffold hire is one trip a month?? I'll be down this afternoon about 1630 ish Rich
  12. Simon, I drive down from southampton to club meetings, so if you want to share from here onwards, I'm bang above Rownhams services, so very close. It takes me about 40 mins to get there from here.................Youre more thasn welcome, it would be good to see you at a meeting, and hear all our drivvel Joking aside, the meetings are generally informative, try and make a date for the AGM. Rich
  13. Looks good in principal Dave, I belonged to a heating oil syndicate when I lived in the Police House, (oil fired CH), and we got about 7p per litre discount, that was with only half the village signed up, so it can work. Coupled with the number of hits the site gets, we should give them a boost, I registered!! Rich
  14. Kam, I'll bring some pike wire, so no worries. Rich
  15. I'm not too sure about being sat next to Adam in the car, when he decides to have a "Waggle"..................... Rich
  16. My choice of rod would be similarto stated variants........the ugl;y stick range are proven worldwide, not just european waters, and do come in at budget prices, compared to the upper range of ABU's. Have a quick gleg at the Grauvell range of lighter multi tipped rods, I grabbed one from Weymouth Angling Centre for about
  17. My understanding on that aspect, is that the boat on which you are fishing has to be registered on the club registered boats list. So..........if the area in which you are fishing falls within club waters, AND the boat on which you are fishing is registered, then my supposition is that you meet the criteria for club awards. Correctamundo??? Rich
  18. Nice one Paul............its a good time for skate.......big blondes especially. Rich
  19. a baby polar bear is talking to his mummy....." Mummy....am I really a Polar bear??" "Of course littlun", she replies......." Now nip off and play". He skips off over the ice, and meets his dad......."Daddy......am I really really a polar bear????", "Of course you are son", his father says........" Now skip off and learn to hunt with your uncle",..................he skips off, " Uncle Teddy........Am I really really really a Polar bear???????", "Of course you are......dont be so silly". "Then why am I so bloody cold???" The old ones are the best/worst. Rich
  20. Kam, thats the place, meet in the car park there at 0900hrs, then the fishery is a few minutes away. Rich
  21. Too Late for flatties, and too early for mullet I'd say. Wait till april then they should be showing and feeding. Rich
  22. Good news Gordon, I presume you will be travelling with Adam?? If we aim to meet up at High Post services for about 0900hrs, the fishery is less than a Swallows flight from there. Sam, a light spinning rod will suffice, along with a smallish fixed spool reel, if youre in trub there, I have a spare rod and reel I can lend you. The pike last year were all jacks in the three to five pound range, but I'm positive that Jimbob or Adam will squeak out an alligator, and Dan or Dommy will crack out a croc!!!! Anthony, the owner, is looking forward to seeing us on friday. Letts not let him down!!!!! Tight lines, Rich
  23. I have arranged the first trip for Friday 10th Feb, its best to get a full day on the river, so an early start would be best. A second day, on a saturday, will be arranged to cater for the chaps who cant make a friday. Please confirm who can attend, Friday list is here: Friday 10th Feb. Kam, Billy, PJ, Adam, James + one, Bob D Saturday date TBA. Alun, Les L, Sam,Dan, Dommy. Gordon, I havent put you on a specific day.......can you make the friday?? We used artificials last time to good effect, James had a good couple of takes on livebaits and float gear, so this should be tried again. Livebaits can be taken on the carriers, so bring suitable bait to snag a few of them. Any Trout taken, MUST be returned, any pike taken will be removed. Rich
  24. Adam, as per page one.............I'm still available to crew. Rich
  25. Many Happy Returns Martin, I wont be at the meeting tonight to buy you a sherbet, but theres always another day. Rich
