Consultation To Boost The Numbers And Size Of Bass
Swainiac replied to munterhunter's topic in In The News
There are papers available on line that give estimates of the catch returned by english trawlers, who have caught bass undersize, and knowing they are too small, hoy them overboard...dead at sea. The landed catch, bears no reference to the overall catch, and a huge percentage of fish are thrown back. I was amazed to hear that the best breeding size of bass, isnt the huge ladies, as I'd previously thought, but in fact, fish of around the four to five pound class, so Ive actually been harming the prospects of Bass breeding by keeping five and six pounders........I live and learn. Surely as there are european laws governing our boys in the trawler fleet, the bl**dy spainish and french should heed these too?? Time for a change methinks. Rich -
Guys, the general rule on ANY radio is a simple A B C..........Acuracy, Brevity......and Clarity, stick to these and you wont go far wrong, or get into too much trub with H M C G. Rich

Dan, contrary to Paul D's earlier penning, I'm an advocate of Mackeral all year round, the largest Cod boated on any boat i fished on last year was a 34lber taken on baited feathers....macky strips......intended for whiting, just around the back of the Island, but yes, squid and cuttle produce far more, but maybe beacuase these baits are used far more than others. Still a bit early for whiting inshore, try in another two or three weeks, water is still V warm for this time of year. Rich

Martin, which days have you in mind?? Rich

Thats ace news T, I just need to get my wrist sorted, so I can hold a bloody rod!!! At this rate, I'll have to strap it for the club open!!
-
Kam, the Bass boys tend to use very small weights, so the weight may not actually be running along the bottom, also they fish very very simple rigs, for ease of set up, and cheapness to reduce expensive tackle loss. Rich

Its amazing how many views some of these threads get...were well over the thousand on this one.

Have you run out of fingers yet Martin???

Mikey, my comp rig for Herring consists of a cut down string of "Sabiki" glo hauge rigs, on a size 4 hook to 7lb snood, and 12lb body, PM your addy, and I'll post you a full one, or cut one down and you have three rigs for WHEN, not if the rig snaps. They arent indestructabubble, so be mindfull of washing them out in fresh water, and I roll mine onto a section of pipe lagging, slipping the hooks into the soft material for safety. I also use a bright red or bright yellow 4-5oz ball weight for the dropper, it really works........there goes my species hunt secret!!!!!! I get my rigs from the states at less than ten bob each, over here you can buy them at WAC, or I think Gerrys does Sabikis too. I think Ive got a dozen or so sets left, each consisting of ten hooks on each string, so thats three rigs per pkt. I'll even throw in postage for free Rich

Guys, I have arranged to meet up with Bob on his return from his travels.....he really needs a PROPER job, so I can cook this weekend. Ive also found my jig head mould, so can do jigs from 1 oz up to 4 oz, hook sizes 2 1/0 and 2/0......I think!! Paul, if you can get your lead to me at some stage, I'll do you a batch of your required size, also, your jigs Charlie.......what colour did u want the jig heads??? Do you want eyes on them?? ooooooooooo very proffeshneal!! I'll also do a bucket for yot mate Charlie, and your Ball weights T (Rocket Ron sends his reagrds BTW). Charlie, may I arrange to meet you for the item you have languishing in the shed, as I'll need some more for the weights?? I'll try and get down this week, as Coddy's tree still needs dropped. Any more takers for weights, jigs, or lead heads, post here and PM requiremnts along with contact numbers. Colours as above. Rich

Hi Tom..didnt see this post and have written elsewhere.......afterw e spoke I rang Josh Symonds, he was actually out at lights in one, and was taking fish, although he did start life as crew, and a hand on a Bass boat, so he knows the score. He was taking fish every drift. That mark can be snaggy, but keep the rig shorter with stormies, and try and just touch bottom.....ooer missus. Last time I fished it, again with Josh, I fished live macky on 8 - 10 ft trace, with a V small weight on....well behind the boat, snagging the best fish of the day, in two drifts...if theyre there they bite..if not they can be a bugger to locate. They should be there untill maybe second week in Dec, although we are due a cold snap as from today, which will have an effect on the water temp. Hopefully you got in touch with BB, and he gave you some good advice....he's a star, although his dress sense can be a little flamboyant when fishing Rich

Hi Dave, I was talking to MIke form UK Hooks yesterday, he's based on the IOW for those who dont know, he told me that cod are now showing off the Needles, the best so far is a twenty two pounder reported. Farther round the Island, more fish are being taken, although a recent Cod only comp fished by 85 or so anglers produced just 10 cod to the scales, which is quite poor. Ted and Mike have now sold "Due South", so our club will be looking for a new boat in the new year, we have a couple of trips left for this year, so hopefully may bag a last cod for the two skippers!! I bloody hope so, I havent boated a winter cod in two years now!! Rich

Guys, following a call from Charlie last week, I'm going to be doing a cook up next week........if I can grab my moulds back from Bob, and lend Shytalks again.....Ive bought a bullet lead mould the same as PJ's, so will be making bullets from 1oz up to 5 oz. I can also put a loop and swivel on 4oz balls, and 5oz balls, which make excellent drifting leads for comp rigs. For a little extra shinyness that generally attracts us anglers, I can powder coat with various colours. I'm happy to make leads gratis, if you provide lead, and coat for a 25p per lead. Lead moulds I have personally, are bopedo 4oz, 8oz, 12oz, 1lb, 2lb,spherical ball weights of 1oz and 2oz and oval ball weights of 1oz up to 5oz. as stated, ovals can be made up with loops and swivels in 4oz and 5oz sizes. For loop and swivel please add about 12p......I think thats what Mike from UK Hooks charges me, SS for wire loops has been sourecd from within the club......TY that member. <g> I also have jighead moulds for small spherical heads, and a much bigger "cod" type lead head, again, I will have to charge for the jig hook, but I'm happy to powder coat these too. I have eyes to glue on these if required...these work well with Small and huge twin tails. I believe peters moulds are 12oz, 1lb, 1 1/4lb and 1 1/2lb. Colours I have for powder coating are yellow, Red, Blue, White, Black, sand sparkle, and Red sparkle. The yellows and reds have proved very good during species hunts on Colins boat Flamer 2 throughtout the year. If you want a batch made up, please give me exact details of your requirement, postings by thursday next please, I'll cook after that date. Post here in the first instance, but PM me a fone number, so I can bell you when theyre done. Cheers guys........Rich
