  1. Bob, when you did those fantastic animated knot diagrams, did u do one for the SIG?? Ive trawled through old posts, found Billy's entry on that subject, but cant find the site that shows this knot. From experience, that sig tied to a nail knot is tops for the leader, and I need to learn this one, just in case I catch a few big wrecks in the channel!!!

    Cheers chap, Rich

  2. Kam...dead right to be sus of this character. Tell him no personal details, no sale. He will either agree to give you some form of I.D. or disapear to rob some other less suspicious vendor. Youve done right. Far too many folk are too open, expecting others to be just as honest...cynical old me knows that unfortunately, they aint!!!

  3. Bob, chatting in WAC, they say they have had numerous returns on this model, mine was still in warranty, but they did the job and sent it back with no charge. When I actually talked to them on the phone, they denied there being a design fault...hey ho!!

I have now obtained a 7000 series Big Game LD, so hopefully...fingers crossed....my issues re gear mangle will be no more......I'll tell you after hauling all those specimen size pollack ling and bass in Alderney wink.gif ......Watch Rich BLANKER!!!! hehehe

  4. Sam, I would echo pauls suggestion of a quick flick in a field, prior to actually casting on water. When actually casting on water, its easier to see the line thatt your cast actually takes........you are aiming for a straight drop of line, and a gentle drop of the tippet, leaving the fly, light as a feather to drop naturaly onto the water surface.......this isnt always neccessary when fishing into salt water, but its a very good casting technique to get into.

I am just off down to the river to get a tree out, so will ask my friend Ron Wilton if I can take you down to his River. He is an excellent instructor, but is getting on in years, and doesnt suffer fools!! Ask your dad what that means. wink.gif

I have your home number, so will telephone this evening when I return, or get straight in touch with your dad, ok??

Had the great fortune to be asked to fish a Plaice comp down in Weymouth...cheers Billy, and did myself proud by helping my boat tally along to 27....nine anglers on board, so I did my bit!! All small plaice, caught on single hook size 2 with red beads, then fluero's then red then flueros, no spoon for firts fish, then a quick change, and a spoon incorporated to find two more fish. All returned. Charter vessel....nothing in the book for me!!

    Tues 5th April

Today was my day out with the constabulary boys, left Lymo on board Due South early, and steamed off the island some 34 miles, out to a mark known as the legs. Drofted over one smallish wreck, lost a small pollack first drift, hooked up on second drift, and heres me thinking I'm in for a stormer!! Very very slow fishing, not the usual savage takes the pollack are reknowned for, despite an abundance of fish marking above the wreck. Three fish on this wreck for me, best going just under nine. Interesting to note fish coughing up sprats.......and with wind against tide, the lures dont approach the shoal at the right angle, so I guess they ignore em......who knows??

Second wreck, slow drifts again, four more pollack for me, a single pout, all pollack in the three to four pound range, good initial dives....fairly lacklustre afterwards!!

The boat had ten fish.......four on board, one angler blanked. Interstingly, all mine fell to Storm Sandeels, on seven foot flowing traces, 12oz of lead on the boom, the others were using red gills, which took one or two, I gave out a few sandeels....which caught!! Get some in for the Alderney trip lads!!

  6. Martin, size wise, unfortunately V poor, and I'm sorry to report that most anglers fishing this comp on Top Kat kept a few plaice, despite them being internationals, and all fish boated in poor, poor condition. All mine went around the two pound mark, very skinny, but all gorging on miniscule sandeels. Two Dabs were boated, Dabs didnt count, but they were eaters.....yes......they threw them back! What is it about anglers thinking all fish go on the table????

My terminal rig was larger oval fluero beads, alongside red beads, size 2 worm hook, from Mike @ UK-Hooks .co.uk......great value.....great tackle...theres the plug Mike! Other anglers were using three hook rigs, as three hooks were allowed in the rules, I stuck to the simple one hook rig...my thoughts being less to tangle! It worked for me! Billy Did V well, I think his tally was 7, his best fish far larger than mine...nice one Bill.

On getting bites, I asked Ivan what speed we were travelling across the grounds at, the reply on each occasion was about 3/4 of a knot. Hope this helps guys.

  7. Adam......two solutions here........1. Open up the drag washers, wipe em down to free them from any surface grease/oil or water, dry them under a hair dryer, ( I have a redundant one now, being a slaphead!), that should sort it.

    2. Just give me the old reels, and you buy a new one!

  8. Fished the shambles yesterday......they boat was drifted BELOW one knot, most drifts took fish. All types of rigs caught, brighter beads out fished darker beads, either with or without spoons. Baut was raggs and a strip of squid, I tipped mine with razor, and did better than some of the others on board.

  9. Dave, our season begins in May...through to october, and that is trout. Can you get down to Eastliegh, near to Southampton? If so, I'll get you a lesson with an old master.....he's a bit short tempered, but an excellent flicker of fluff!! ( No guys, contrary to popular belief, its not me! Old..yes....short tempered...yes....Master...NOT!).

  10. Lads...top tip......watch for the cuttle netters that are about to start netting in the solent area. After they have finished, steam about in their general area, and look for groups of seagulls sat on the water, like nodding dogs. Look in that area, you will certainly find a cuttle that has slipped through the net. You can collect plenty out there at this time of year.

  11. Paul, the record was actually caught from the shore, and the best type of stinger fishing around that area, is to almost ground the boat!! You can almost see the fish moving!

For Bass, try the area at the mouth of Beauliea River, around Sea Gull Island, but this is a bit iffy at low water. Large Bass appear off the old Lookout cottage, on Lepe Beach, fish over the gravel run where the outflow can be seen from the shore. Theyre regularly caught form the shore here, some going over the elusive ten. Steam back towards Calshot, and look for the showings of water moving over the gravel bank, known as stone point, I think, drift over this in flood, with worms....jelly or raggies, and you will deffo pick up schoolies here.

Kam, unlike any other river in the country, The Lord actually has ownership of the river bed, not the sovreign, as she does in all other places, thats why there is private fishing all up the river, but as far as I'm aware, you can fish off Park Shore. Its just the beach that is private, as is the beach between Lepe and Calshot. We've had Thornies off the end of Lepe, historically, nothing big, but it shows they are there. There is a bank which should show on your finder, we used to WADE out to it with a long line......back in the days when men were men and women were glad of it!! This is where we took plaice, flounder, bass, and thornies on Long lines baited with rag.

Hope this helps. If you want me to show you, let me know when you are launching sweet honey, I'll crew for you.

  12. I know its a different system to plotters, but I took my laptop along with me, using my Garmin GPS 2 Plus unit along with world map discs, which showed every road currently usable across the whole of the states. This also allowed me to place waypoints/sites of interest........wasnt read only. This was also given to me by Garmin Europe to use and try out, used in cinjunction with their GPS unit. Would it be that Garmin and lowrence units arent compatible......?????

  13. You're on Dave........Kam, try nudging Sweet Honey close inshore near to Lordy's Bungalow that is clearly visible near to Park Shore. Also the area in the vicinity of the Sowley Boom offers excellent stinger fishing. There is, apparently, a knack to catching these blighters close in, I'm still working on my source to finding this out!!

    Rich.......Stinger-less last season!!!! dry.gif
