  1. Charlie...............I think our trip is orf, as Adam has about twenty tonnes of Scalps in front of BW, so unless I nip over and bring a barrow........theres no chance of a trip out today. Will bell Adam after brekkie, and see if we can squeeze something out.

Ps, If youre still going out after work, and the boys arent up for the trip out, If you want crew, I'm well uo for an evening sesh...............getting withdrawl!!!!!!!

  2. Guys....................after a visit to the outboard shop in Christchurch yesterday, all was revealed! Appaerently a pin holds all the gubbins in place, and the shaft needs to be turned slightly to allow the mechanics to slide.......Done.

However.......replacement bolts to hold the Power head to the shaft housing are eleven quid each!! Can you believe it?!!!! All split and sorted, new gaskets purchased, just a case of rebuilding now. Thanks for the help Mikey and Adam.

    Rich........Rich's Dad really

Oh and lads.............see despite the viscious rumours......I do have a Dad wink.gif

  3. Adam, what is that site you suggested?? When I locate it, I'll try and post there. Mikey..........apart from the DUNDUNDARRRRR! everything else seems straightforward. Dad is from an industrial mechanical background, so his knowledge is pretty damn good of most aspects, unlike mine!!!

We just weren't sure about the gasket issue, the actual donkey is fine, she is free and fairly smooth, its the ancilary parts of the shaft that need splitting and inspecting. All the electrics are in GWO, its just the case of replacing the gubbins at the top of the shaft, its a small transfer gadget that links onto a hooked section of 5mm ish rod, I'll look in the manual, and see what the thing does. Dad is taking the engine over to France this week, they are on holls with family out there, so I expect he will log on and check the forum in due course, so please keep writing folks!!!

See you thuis evening at the meeting......

    Ta muchly, Rich

  4. Guys, Dad is rebuilding/overhauling his outboard. He has an old Johnson Sea Horse CD-CDL i think.

It has been stood for ages......and I mean ages, so it needs a complete top to toe.

He is having problems splitting the three sections of the shaft housing.....all studs are out, but she still wont split. Any suggestions.....Mikey, your era perhaps? Also, when replacing sections, will instant gasket do, or do you guys reccomend genuine parts? I expect he will log into the site to view your remarks, so all views and suggestions/hints are welcome.

    Thanks guys............

  5. Kam, all of my cod caught on bait, have fallen to squid. I use about six of them, on a pennel rig. That accounts for mine. I have had success on lures over wrecks in the summer months, but the winter bait caught fish have always been larger fish.

One train of thought on cod, is to empty out the contents of the squid, and fill it with lugworm, then place onto the rig. Next you pierce it with a baiting needle to allow the juices to flow out. Ive never tried this method, but it appears in sea fishing articles on the appearance of winter cod!! I think it would work out expensive though!!!

    Regards, Rich

  6. Kam, have you thought of a ground anchor instead of a wheel clamp?? If the trailer is parked in the same spot every time you get home, whack one of these into the ground with anchor bolts, and use a length of motorcycle chain and security padlock to fix your pride and joy. I have this set up for all my machines in my store, behind steel doors, with a class one alarm system. It reduces insurance costs too. When you take the boat out, the chain and padlock can be employed to secure the trailer to your vehicle, around the axle, no bugger can remove the bloomin' thing then!!!

My kit came from a motorcycle outlet, and cost me just over a hundred quid, but when thousands of pounds worth of kit is protected, you cant complain.

  7. Pete Snr and I had the early start, and steamed straight out to attempt anchor on a previously productive mark. With three baits in the water, I sneaked a bite wich produced the first fish to the boat, a small Blonde which went just under 6lb, not huge, but a start. Peter took the show over from here, managing five fish, Blondes and small eyed's his best Blonde went 12 1/2lb (I think), and the best small eyed went about 6lb. The last Ray of the sesh fell to me, another very small Blonde.......perhaps we'll give that mark a try in another six years Peter!!!!

We managed a plethera of Doggies, some small to medium sized bream, that strangely enough, continued to bite well into the tide pick up, Pete squeezed out two nice Red Gurnard, and a small Gar caught down on the bottom.

The last Ray to pete was in strongish tide, falling to a bait presented on his lighter rod, so, squeezing my bulk through the cabin window, I managed to bouy the anchor, and drift back over the fish, which was the largest of the day. Another lesson learnt aboard the good ship "Whistler". Thank God for spandex flotation suits!!!! wink.gif

Back into the Swash, and drifted once for a plaice, but didnt connect, and with the water rapidly draining from the Bay, we steamed for home, getting back onto the mooring with a few feet of water under the boat.

Thanks for another great day Pete,

    Rich

  8. Guys, in this situation, what is the best plan of action?? Try to head for deeper water, or continue with the planned recovery? Apart form the loose articles in the boat which may shift, does the skipper point the bow into the swell and push back out??

Hope all is well Adam, if repairs are needed, and you need to construct a platform to secure the boat off the trailer for any reason, I have loads of scaffolding that you are welcome to use to construct bracing for BW, and likewise to Bob.

Regards, and glad you're safe and well, Rich

  9. Well guys, what a swift and steep learning curve this comp is!

Day one saw foul weather with strong winds, so not much in the way of offshore species. All boats tucked in around the western edge of the harbour, but all in all, a huge number of species were taken, I beleive Tom took two trigers on two drifts, one of which should really have been weighed in for specimen..hey ho! I finished the day with 7 species, I think, and a total of 140ish points, 70% of boat winner.

Day two and can the weather get worse?? Same structure as day before, and a better result for me, finishing 4th on the boat, learning fast!! Caught a Garfish of 108%, which was leading the specimen board till the last day...Bugger!

Day three was the lure day, no baits at all, no scents, no power baits etc, and I drew a good posituion on the boat, right next to one of the Swedish lure fishing masters!!!! Good draw Rich......Not!! However, I squeezed 8 species, and finished 3rd on the boat, learning loads from the Swedes!!! Overall position had gone up to 50th!!!!! WOW!

Day four, another species hunt, best day for me, with 11 species, my first cuckoo wrasse, all 6 of them!!! sandeels, pollack, ballans, doggies, Red Gurnard, bull huss, mackerel, scad, Garfish, and poor cod.

Day five saw the light line event, all boats bagging up on Mackerel baits, then off to the conger grounds. I drew position one on Tger Lilly, which in the wind and tide direction couldnt have been worse!!! Bad workmen and tools I hear you say! I snagged two conger, got them clear of the rough ground and wreckage, only to lose them with the mono rubbing the keel of the boat.......double bugger! Why is it when scad, doggies, poor cod, and mackies dont count I manage to bag up on 'em?

A very poor 0% scored today, although some consolation, two internationals who drew the back of the boat failed to score also. I expect that this poor return saw me drop down in the 70's for the week, but I was well happy with my efforts, and will deffo be entering again next year. A big thanks to BB for all your help with rigs, and car parking bacon sarnies and general mirth...........good man Bill, love to fish with you again soon chap.

    Regards to all, Rich

  10. Mikey.........look behind you!!!!!

No, in seriousness, Paul, I can get hold of the sergeant from the Marine Unit in Poole, the Dorset Constabulary's boys in blue in boats........my mate Andy who holds the same position here can give me his number, or make a call on our behalf, or ask him to contact you in person, or we can just ask Mikey to nick a boat......and if they catch up with him, well just book an appointment, if not...........I'd like a nice new Explorer mikey, all shiny, with a four stroke out back, I'll just say I bought it off a man in a pub wink.gif

    Rich

  11. Martin, Pete Snr has contacted me to crew on the good ship "whistler", so if all goes to plan, Pete and I will fish together, but thanks for the invitation.

26 Rays were taken by one boat yesterday, light line day, so our comp should have plenty of boats weigh in..............tight lines

    Rich

  12. Martin, a little detective work on the the local councillors will show their leanings towards or against anglers, and indeed field sports in general. The current climate is for a total ban on hunting, driven shoots are the next objective in their sights, and I'm afraid, angling will eventually come to the fore. All of us have to remember that we have a basic right under european legislation to fish, shoot, hunt with hounds, or languish in front of our TV on a saturday, picking our noses. But believe me, they will eventually point their gun at us. (I am still a keen falconer, and we set up a fighhting fund 7 years ago, to get legal advice for just this, and believe you me, we need it now, as falconry is getting pretty high on the list for banning!)

Council members like the power that they possess, implied or otherwise, as a local police officer, I spent many many hours sitting at the back of all our three parish council meetings. A suggestion is to get a few well camouflaged members into parish council meetings and listen to matters in hand to get to know the council. Then you will have an idea on whether they are pro or against angling, and save a lot of energies in the process. In the AOB session at the end of each meeting, just like ours, the public gates the chance to qustion the local councillors......here is your window of opportunity. I would do the job myself, but I'm miles away.....you need a local council tax payer to do it.

    Regards, Rich

  13. Mikey..............compare the price Martin gets to the price food shops are selling them. Food grade squid is extortionately expensive.......the stuff we use for bait is not clasified as consumable. However, if you have an extremely solid constitution, give them a try!!!

    Regards, Rich.................without the runs!!!!!!

  14. Alun, growing up in Hythe, we fished the reclaimed land before it became Hythe Marina, excellent flattie ground, mainly flounders. I used to longline off the left side of hythe pier, best bag was 112 flounders in a day!!

If you drive up to Marchwood, try down a little lane called Magazine lane, need a 4x4 to reach the end, good here for small whiting and flatties.

If you go farther up, right up to the mouth of the test, in front of the Bridges, excellent Bass sport is to be had here......regular fish over 10lb for the early risers!!

    regards, Rich

  15. Adam, let me know, sharpish , which styles you need/wish. Father in law is still out stateside, so I'm sure he wont mind another trip into the Bass pro shop!! If it helps, I have six rattlin Storm Chug BUg lures, they are plugs, equally as good as Rapala's, have a think matey

    Regards, Rich

  16. Kam, our police club trip was cancelled from Lymo for today, however I'm fishing the YYs at the mo, so were out whatever the weather!!

I can help next tuesday if you wish, or take you down farther west if you wish to meet the guys down there. Maybe a few boats could go out if people are available???

    Regards Rich
