The railings on Phaeton have taken a bit of damage over the years, but removal is very much a last resort - can't get at a couple of the nuts. Not looking at a perfect cosmetic job but is it a possibility? Basically it needs a new threaded stud in the forward stanchion base, one stanchion bent and split in the middle and one sprung weld where a middle rail has come away from the stanchion. Any suggestions as to who to approach? Cheers

Now what? Wed Thu next week look great!
-
for those interested here is what I am currently looking at from Ugrib

"It does not say a great deal about us as a race does it " Sadly it says a huge amount..........
-
well the alternative seems to be - 1. a general election 2. snooker (whoops that's over) 3. the Fifth Element (again) on TV .............

fwiw I currently favour the schedule Greg outlines from my interpretation of the likely conditions. I don't think that earlier conditions are likely to be dangerous, but closer to uncomfortable than enjoyable (Alfresco excepted) - but again this is a risk more than a certainty. otoh the seaweed etc suggests that Mon-Wed could firm up as excellent all round - if not quite the 30 degrees suggested earlier! The range of tides favoring flatties Mon and bass Wed as well. Anyway - back to a bottle of brandy to take my mind of it all.

Paul The (very) recent Atlantic Blue Fin Tuna issues sum it up all too starkly - any value stock simply becomes a race to destruction.......... interested parties have yet to illustrate any capability to support anything else.
-
I have never seen such a wide range of wind forecasts from different sources - pulling down data from US grib shows Mon - Wed as really light winds all round with Sun wet with NE 3-4...... Metcheck for Alderney over the same period has me making a call to stay at home and not even bother to get things ready! Wetterkarte's charts seem to be more consistent with the Grib forecast than Metcheck's interpretation.

any NE nights can be spent in St PP on the outer pontoons in total comfort if you start and finish a day's fishing on the S tip of the Schole it's not that much further than running into Braye you need to keep the dingy with you for this sort of approach though - as well as sleeping on board of course!

I wouldn't (be put off) Optimax is very well established and pretty fuel efficient. It's lighter for the HP and has less moving parts than a 4 stroke........ E-tec is similar; newer but the teething issues got resolved. Slightly more efficient than Optimax in theory. Honda and Yam 4 strokes are also great and the former used a lot by commercials - the latter getting a better name all the time. They are all good - and all miles from 'old 2 strokes'.

well done Mike - and I hope the boat sells for you.

exactly my thoughts - but appreciate that for others opportunity and priority don't always match. AdamF wrote - "Like others I'm prepared to go at the last minute if this forecast does change, but plan B for me at the moment is leaving Sun, back Weds (or earlier if the forecast changes) my only proviso is getting a buddy boat - so who else is flexible?" Whilst I am, within the framework eloquently put above, I don't think it's appropriate for me to put myself forward as a buddy boat Adam. Running solo and still with things to resolve I wouldn't want your (or anyone else's) trip to have me as a dependency. Looking at the forecast resolution of battery and windscreen wiper look quite high now! Sun does look OK for traveling with the banks pleasantly fishable early in the week. Long time away though...

as ever it's tough to predict - the good news seems to be that there shouldn't be significant residual swell etc if and when things settle also things do seem to head the right way through the latter part of next week so, not for the first time, it's probably a timing issue; with faster being better... however I have to say I'm resigned to a wind check this time round - we really have been fortunate for the last couple of years! I realise that most people will be more inconvenienced than I will but marginal out, excellent over there then back works - marginal overall doesn't. time will tell

I'm not convinced he went all the way round the Island even once - all the articles would appear rich on hype, ridicule and exaggeration. they all seem to agree he had a 20l fuel tank though - and that's not going to get him that far! (yes I know all the people on here would work the tides, use optimum throttle settings and get all the way to Southampton on 20 ltrs )

Terry Just back from a couple of days trying to sort the boat - reasonably promising so I'm happier to be included in numbers. Basically if I get to Alderney I would love to join the party at the HL Cheers
-
Well I'm going to believe Terry enough to head down tonight and work over the next couple of days to install the new windlass gearbox and try to sort that stanchion base then there's a new aux battery and swapping out some chartplotter wiring then, if all that goes OK I'll do a basic engine service and then turn the key as usual if the weather plays ball sort out the cosmetics when we get back!
-
well you have the right man on it not quite sure what your problem is but I'm sure it's resolvable - CH have come on a long way in the last 5 years from no instructions to a reasonably consistent wiring approach. I think green is the NMEA - common to both units and then it's brown to blue on the NMEA + side with Brown the output/blue the input ie brown chartplotter to blue radio. All this should be checked as my memory is failing (according to my wife)
-
well the good news is that you are a club member - so getting it sorted really isn't going be a big problem best is to let us know the units you have, and someone will be able to advise which wire goes where - and then if some form of follow up is needed I'm sure it can be sorted

the bright red spines are an interesting element but I can't see a match anywhere from Coddy's link one of the images of Gobius cobitis looks a very close match indeed
-
tough one from the detail available..... I favour GOBIIDAE, possibly Gobius paganellus, or COTTIDAE from what's visible of the dorsal arrangement. Body doesn't really fit CALLIONYMIDAE, and dorsal seems to rule out BLENNIIDAE

if you have a 135l box then the answer must be yes.......... I have a 72 and 13.5kg is about what we used to stick in it for a trip beers, butter and bacon on ice on the way out, bait added as we went and fish replacing beer through the trip.......... still a lot of ice 4 days later. 13.5 kg at 50% by volume (?) will be about a 20% off a 135l box - leaving the sort of volume Dean might consider appropriate for beer I will certainly try and use this supplier as well - either in conjunction with others or on my own. Be good to establish 'collection hours'. Will be useful for general boating (especially for Rockley boats!) and the quality of the product suggests G&T could be on the menu as well...
-
I too will be unable to make Monday's session - fingers crossed I can get the boat sorted for the actual trip (and the other small matters needing attention!). Come to think of it I haven't got round to crew either... I really should be more organised but it's difficult to deal with such matters when you're not sure you have a boat in the first place! The good news is that I'm no less orgainsed that usual; and at least my engine's not still in Austria (well it might be I suppose - but I don't think so)
-
nah - but we will miss you ..........
-
thank you Rob, all sorted (I think) one key element was finding out they are called lacing buttons!
