had this problem before - my cover locates over small nylon pegs (which themselves have a 3/4" x 6 screw through them into the fibreglass) after 10 years the ones 'high up' are breaking up, and others have had knocks, so I want to replace them all. also over the years I have replaced odd ones from time to time and always struggled to get matches - so I have the originals which are a little longer and more rounded, some SS ones and some others that are 'squarer'. tried searching online under various listings from cotton reels to pegs, etc but to no avail........ any suggestions - I can't even remember where I got the SS ones from (possibly Cobbs?) thanks in advance

"JV has been out, all serviced and clean, a few new toys added and she's ready to go" that made me smile........ Phaeton's been in all winter and I got down for the first time last week - just enough to find a stanchion torn out and bail out the odd few (loads) of fresh water.... add this to being told I'm hosting a surprise 80th b'day party for my mum on the 9th May and I guess I'm as ready as usual........... If the weather delivers I'm sure I can sort out the boat (and other) issues somehow

numbers sound spot on to me. always difficult to be absolutely precise as there will be a number of factors at play with sea state contributing up to 40% variance in some cases Fuel consumption at 8 knots will be vastly better of course - lph and lpm - on a hull/drive train like that. otoh it is a lot of boat for 8m - enjoy it.

not sure the arguments are the same - although it's likely the same old points will be made by the same individuals. what I found particularly funny was the 'comment' posted referencing the Ebonnie and Lecume as English raiders. Whilst the former is Brixham based it seems to spend most of it's time in Braye and Cherborg (they must have read the post as they are heading N from Braye right now!), the latter seems to be a St Helier craft spending it's time in Jersey and Guernsey? catch reports will be interesting in due course

definitely one way of looking at it.... otoh the boat's looking good! Phaeton's new windlass gearbox arrived today, 4 months after first discussions with Quick Italy and at full price, but yesterday I found that the bow stanchion on the port side had been ripped apart from the hull (suspect someone put a mooring line round it by mistake and the weather did the damage but the cause is irrelevant). Removing the sheared bolt bit from the welded nut in the stanchion appears one of those jobs that may take 2 mins - or be a nightmare (propose drilling 2 small holes and trying to remove with circlip pliers as first option?) Ah well at least I'm thinking of using it again!

Mark, the problem is that there are just so many possible issues that it's impossible to diagnose accurately from the info given for example there could be a gearbox problem (ie when put in gear the engine produces normal power but the gearbox is semi seized so it stalls as above but related to the propshaft above OK but the engine lacks power - carburation most likely here unless it's worse when the engine is hot when it could indicate plug insulating breaking down (less likely on a multi cylinder unit) bent crank failed rings idle set too slow these are more to indicate the range of possible issues than provide likely solutions my starting point would be to increase the idle after checking the prop shaft is nice a free.

6 to 8hp will do the job as already outlined - if you are looking at 'get you home' capability then it should be able to run on the main engine fuel system. with no wind or tide or waves 4hp will give you the illusion of sufficient poke but, quite frankly, things don't pan out that way in real life! it's no surprise that the engines that work well at this are in demand and command a high sh price - they will be reliable, good torque and light for their output. Tohatsu 9.8 is the real king. do beware putting too much additional weight right on the transom - I have a 3 ton 25 footer but adding the 30kg tender on weaver davits makes a huge difference to the boat's trim. 20kg on a 17ft boat will do at least the same.

aw shucks guys ...... the morning (up here) did turn out relatively nice but missing a putt on the last green cost me the competition will feel better when I've cooked (and eaten) dinner thanks for the thoughts - seriously looking forward to sorting out the boat and going fishing this year!
-
I have penciled the dates in the diary but haven't any real idea of whether I'll be along, alone, fishing or cruising etc Will monitor the thread over time and as we get closer I should have some idea how the land lies, and the boat runs!

thanks for posting this, both of you, I was getting close to packing a bag and coming down to stay on the boat for a few days (Rockley is closed for 2 months) in order to get out again.... I'll now wait until there is a really solid weather window - or spring!

I did of course mean women as indicated by the line "They could drive down , cook the tea, biggrin.gif buy the beer , biggrin.gif sleep onboard, biggrin.gif cook breakfast biggrin.gif then drive home when we go fishing biggrin.gif" which seemed a mile away from women fishing - which would be great ! time for me to stop digging my grave me thinks .....

As Rob asks - which model? Don't see any benefit in linking model to model - better off connecting the unit to your computer direct but I'm unaware of a software update application dedicated to that functionality.
-
I'm assuming you have the HDS-5x unit - the only sonar only unit? Page 4 of the operations manual suggests that it does have a card door (underneath the designation) but I guess from your comment above that this is incorrect. This is a surprising ommission as recording sonar data for review on a computer later is a great Lowrance feature! Hmm - page 87 spec claims 2 SD slots......and page 49 discusses saving files to SD/MMC Are you sure you don't have them!?! Page 95 on Updating the Software is useless and refers you to the Lowrance web site...which has the download but nothing on what to do if you don't have a card slot!

Alan, I think your post(s) illustrate very well the difference between the priorities of the cruiser and the fisherman; although obviously the fisherman still needs the safety element as well as the convenience. I've actually used my main set up (no trip) when fishing for the last 9 years - and have only had to leave it once when it got snagged on the wall of Lobster Rock (Inner patch) one night and I had the luxury of being able to collect the next day. This meant I had to rig the spare for the run in 'just in case'! I have decided to switch over to exactly the set up you describe going forwards, as much because I aim to anchor (and fish) more often as anything else! (small difference is that I have only 15m of 8mm chain spliced to 14mm octoplait on my main but the principles sound!). Having control over the windlass from both the bow and the cockpit does make anchoring (and leaving) in tight spots single handed a doddle but it's little use in 100ft+

is this one of those 'spot the possible issues' questions?

you're forgetting all those sheep..................

you will struggle to get the tent pegs in on the harbour wall m8......

good idea all round it's a good overnight or long weekend venue and, as suggested, smaller boats could trail if they want to. I can't imagine mixing women and fishing though... , but then again I've never had the balls to approach it in the way Charlie has outlined...
-
indeed...although I can't see any one onboard sleeping now the harbour fishing has been experienced I'm also going to carry the tender despite the apparent 'hassle' - the reality is it takes away a huge amount of hassle when over there in either Braye or St PP!

add me to the list please Adam

I'll second Charlie's comments regarding tides. I am sooooo looking forward to heading over with Quest II, but will be booking my days around the tide tables rather than the actual dates. For Turbot, I plan to go on neaps as I hate to drag a weight to slow the drift. Interestingly, if you want an early May trip, Thursday 6th through Monday 10th are perfect flattie tides. Then Sunday 6th June to Thursday 10th June also look good. I may leave it until early / mid Juneish or even the end of July and make use of the mid channel marks on the way home too? Monday 21st June to Friday 25th would seem like a nice week to also have a go at the mid channel Cod (and Conger 'ey Charlie?) en route back in? Or Monday 5th July to Friday 9th July? Definitely good mid channel action (maybe even a little late) by Monday 19th July throught to Saturday 24th July? Tom well, what a coincidence, all those dates seem free in my diary Tom! now if only we could book the weather in the same way........

looks (from the pictures) to be a well presented SO there Alan, I'm sure you will have a lot of fun. I'm sure we can all agree on NW2-3 for 2010 ...... enjoy it
