    quotas are not the answer, and for most trawls mesh size is a joke too - what we need are no go areas for trawls and nets (indiscriminate fishing methods).

     

    These can lie with us - the EU issue is valid but we can start effectively at home - and these should be banned within 2 miles of shore. Simple as that.

     

    Add to that a ban on harvesting for fish meal and you should take care of both the fry (early) stages of many species and their food supply in later life.

     

    Economic impact should be minimal - sand eel fisheries are mariginal economically anyway relying on local economic aid from time to time and the (for example) soles you would loose from this area would be replaced by increased stocks further out anyway.

     

    For our part I would suggest that returning all female bream in the spring should be second nature.............it's the only real impact the leisure angler is likely to have as part of the wider picture.

    Think you will find the channel is generally considered 'cat -c' water although of course the RCD are only guidlines as to the design critea of the craft and it is the condisiton in place at the time rather than what might reasonably be expected as an average that really matter!

     

    NOthing wrong in heading across the channel in a mirror dingy if the conditions are OK and you have planned your passage properly!

    As many have said it doesn't have to be written down but everyone raises the spectre of 'an incident'...........

     

    It is nothing to do with the CG, logging or calling in a passage etc

     

    It is everything to do with 'the considerations to be made by the skipper on leaving 'sheltered waters - which are excluded from the regs but not, an Adam says, from any common sense approach.

     

    The solent is classified as sheltered water, as are Poole and Christchurch Harbours. Once you have left either of these the requirements apply to you (in any craft).

     

    Gordon's list is sensible but the regulations have some specifics that aren't explicitly on there -

    Fuel

    Consideration of the comfort as well as the safety of 'crew'

    Weather, tide and your route should be 'computed' into expected conditions

     

    Jack - the small craft register was the forerunner of the CG66 and initially held locally at each station. Now computerised the database is nationally accessable by each station. You can update your records online, including adding a picture of your boat! In fact you have to update it every 24months or they claim they will remove your entry (but I doubt it!). There was a thread on here about it including the links etc etc

    I am not sure what's needed really pictures here showing the upper and lower angles - the lower one shows the nylon band that holds the deck and hull together has been broken away over about a foot (the upper shows it's split), the trim is broken and there's gell and maybe fiberglass to do.

    ie it's not just a gel patch and refinish.

     

    When I get details I will send photos to his insurers and ask them how they wish to proceed - if they ask me to get quotes then your assistance would be appreciated.

  6. Charlie - it will obviously come as a bit of a surprise but very very few on here use our boats exclusively for fishing!

     

    In my case between May and September I am unlikely to get out fishing more than twice - and if the weather looks good I may be told 're arrange'!

    However between October and April the situation reverses adn I may take the family out a couple of times and go fishing the rest.

     

    This keeps the world going round and enables me to have the sort of 'toy' I couldn't justify just for fishing (me).

     

    FWIW I believe that the cuddy element is overrated for what you are likely to do in the poole area in a boat that size - if the weather requires 'shelter' you just won't be out - and you really shouldn't have people 'down below' when underway either. If the boat's being stored undercover you don't need covered storage either.

     

    All the best - hope to see you at the clubs family day out afloat next year - yes we do have them!

  7. I understand from the boatyard manager that the gentleman concerned has 'admitted' the incident but didn't think he had caused any damage. This is entirely understandable and it should now simply be a matter of leaving it to his insurers to sort out in due course.

     

    For those with a morbid curiosity (and given the views of a boat at Emsworthy there are a few rolleyes.gif ) I will post pictures later.

     

    Anyhow I am a lot happier today than I was yesterday.

  8. Scary movie II - I am in total agreement with Mike again!

     

    Suspect that the rubber mounting piece is designed to avoid this by creating a buffer between the motor and the hull but transmission could be via steering or even control cables. Worth checking that these are fully secured to the boat etc.

     

    Best check is to isolate the engine sounds as best you can; the old screwdriver to the ear/skull bone from engine block for example, and run through the rev range to establish if it is the engine creating the vibration or not. If there is a noticably different vibration from the actual engine at these revs then it needs looking at. If it is the boat creating the 'noise' in harmonic sympathy with the engines vibrations at those revs then just avoid the revs.

    My money would be on the latter but worth checking.

  9. Dave and I got out on Phaeton and our catch report is a match to Marineboy's - Dave getting the conger this time round.

     

    Nice day to be out burning diesel - if we had know Blue Warrior's plan we might have joined in (although Adam seems to prefer wrecks to himself!! rolleyes.gif )

     

    Not as much fun with shallows as others but didn't escape unscathed - it would appear that a fellow fisher on the same pontoon suffered a small problem during the week and has caused significant damage to Phaeton. I am sure that he just hasn't got round to telling anyone yet; or didn't realise the damage (possible - he's hardly scratched!)........no doubt he will call me next week...........

  10. I find t bars and full circles don't mix particularily well - however as the bend of the hook is normally clear I use a pair of long nose moles, clamp onto the bend and they twist out real easy.

     

    Barbless however they should come out a lot easier still

     

    As circles sizing and baiting is still a hot topic I will see if I can sort out some pictures to 'aid discussions' - my favorite 10/0 circle is about the same 'size' as a 3-4/0 J hook but I will admit the 16/0 are a little larger - take 12 calamari hanging on the bend in a fan or a single (2lb) cuttle..............

  11. Jack - now I am seriously concerned.

     

    Please please don't use a harness attached to this wonderfull reel unless you are properly strapped into your fighting chair.

     

    Your life is at risk.

     

    Ideally the harness is integrated to your chair I believe - I am sure you remeber the detail of this illustrated earlier but in case you missed it
