  1. I am sure you will have a great trip Reg

I am sure we will meet up when you are down - I have a van at Rockley and the boat's on the pontoons at the bottom of the hill!

Equally I am sure you won't still be a minnow basher by the time you arrive!

When you know how many are coming down let us know - you may even get a cheeky match challenge.

  2. I also need to write something to allow the Members Fish catch pages to be updated more readily ( but only 24 hours in a day etc

and given that, as we all know, 22 of these are for fishing and planning fishing trips, you are doing a brilliant job Paul.

    Keep it up!

  3. Finally - if you are getting 29 knots at 5000 RPM, I wouldnt be too dissapointed, the engine wont be running flat out like this at least. My Mariner (60hp 4 stroke on a Warrior 165) runs WOT at 5500 RPM which I can live with as the engine is not being hammered then.

sorry to be a broken record on this but the boat should be propped to within 200 rpm of the engines rated WOT normally loaded for optimum

    1. fuel economy

    2. engine wear

    3. transmission wear

    4. top speed

On these larger engines, and especially 4 strokes, 400 or so off fully loaded is considered OK (especially if the engine is right at the top end of what the boat needs - Maverick's set up would be an example, Blue Warrior's not far behind in the ptw stakes) but at 1000 off you need to consider a different prop or something else is wrong somewhere. The other references to experiences here tend to suggest that that isn't the case unless it's down to the state of your hull or a 200kg weight box (don't laugh we weighed our weight bucket on Phaeton at 60kg last winter) Are you running a 'quality' prop - some of the cheaper stainless ones have such thick blades they can have the effect of seeming like more pitch without the advantages of it! You are fortunate in having pretty much lthe largest range of props made that fit your engine so something somewhere will be right.

the only thing you can really gain by not doing so is acceleration where significant gains can be made by using a lower pitch at the expense of 1, 2 and 4 above, and a need to take care not to exceed max revs with the throttle hand - in practice if you need more acceleration at the expense of 4 above moving to a 4 or 5 blade prop is the only correct route.

As an extreme example driving a car up a slope with your foot on the floor to just hold a higher gear do not deliver 1,2 or 3 above! An extreme to illustrate the point - the drag on a a hull means that boat engines are always driving up hill!

Top speed for any given craft is a product of hp so a higher gear (greater pitch) alone won't make your boat go faster and every OB I know produces it's maximum hp at it's max revs...........QED.

If you want to improve 1-4 above then don't whack the throttle open at every opportunity, cruise at 70-80% max revs if you can and change the oil frequently!

  4. now you are getting the hang of this lark Jack! Does it have harness lugs and have you got a good one? I am still looking out for one so can you let me kow what you find?

personally I wouldn't want to head out with the reel until I was absolutely sure I was going to hook up a beast, and land it.

I can let you have some 16/0 hooks - do you have 250lb wire trace material and some 400lb nylon for leaders and rubbing traces?

    rolleyes.gif

  5. welcome Jim

What is the recommended WOT revs for this engine? Suspect you should have a similar rev and prop to you M8 - what is he running as a prop and what revs is he getting?

When you talk about bringing it up a notch - surely its got power trim and tilt?

Are you triming out to the optimum position once up and running?

Finally, and plese don't take this too personally - but are you and your gear a few kg more than him? As an example on my previous boat (6.6m) my son could get 4 knots more than me!

  6. Lowrance initially gave them to retailers to give out with each Lowrance unit sold at the show - this proved very sucessfull!

Further stocks were aquired - then more required and last I heard they were continuing but at cost on the charts; don't know what that ended up being!

It's a new Lowrance charting provided by Transas, looks like admiralty. Coverage is an amazing Iceland (all) to Gib and between. Detail is 'best available' - looked around Pole/Peveril etc and everything I had ever seen on a chart was there so here's hoping!

  7. agree some disapointments -

guiness finally gone up - 310p a pint

avanta tackle was in the main hall and others had taken stalls in the east hall for the first time. enjoyed selecting my hooks for 2006................for those of us that dont get to look round walmart or bassangler etc in the states!

Rodman have produced a new 1170 to replace the 1120 - unfortunately it's wider to give better accomadation.........;o( interestingly it is available with Volvo's IPS but the price is a little high overall and I will keep looking at SH 1120's.....

the Jenneau 32 was my pick of the medium cruisers for style and a good fit out - don't like the varnished mahogany around the cockpit - looked daft especially with the teak deacks - but nothings perfect. Would make a half decent angling platform too!

bought a Lowrance 3500c - felt I had to after recomending it so much. 370 including charting to cover iceland to Gib was an offer to good to be true (and actually withdrawn 20mins after I purchased!)

and a new tap for the cockpit sink.........

  8. Rockley will be expensive - circa 700 a week for a van at that time and you will end up paying a fair bit for the yard and slip use (can't keep boats at vans).

If you have tents then book into the camp site just off the junction of the A350 with the A31 (something hill but I have forgotten it........or the one just along the 31 past the Swanage turn off) - both will permit boats by vans if you are 'sensitive' to others etc or arrange to store the boats at Cobbs Quay (for example).

Another alternative would ben to use Weymouth and try to book berths in the marina for the period.

I am afraid it's going to be expensive however you do it at that time - everyone with a trailer boat and family has the same idea!

Many pay a full years fees (boat or van) for a few weeks use at that time of year!!!!

  9. although it's a few posts back I did mean Pout - the 'in joke' was that Alun was looking for the large pout he had kept for exactly this purpose - only to find they had been 'chucked' as they are usually only retained for bait............. rolleyes.gif

these misunderstandings will happen from time to time!

  10. got to laugh about the sage and onion stuffing............. biggrin.gif

love the add what you like principle though.

personally I would omit the stuffing and either use creme fraiche rather than cream and then serve with a squeeze of lemon or sour the cream with fresh lemon before adding if using a nice vinagrette on the leaves..........

mind you first you have to get your pout home.............. sad.gif

  11. let him be; he's enjoying his fish! - and I am sure we haven't heard the last of this particular cod yet either rolleyes.gif

btw Paul I would add the chloriso from the beginning and the cheese maybe 5 mins from the end - get more of the oil out of the chloriso (and over the fish yum yum) that way!

  12. hehehe nice looking boat Adam.

as usual I will put some slightly different angles..........

    1. Almost certainly an 8ft 6 beam as the US boats around this size are trailed and fr many states this is the limit. It will weigh in at around 2600kg so it isn't 'too big to be trailed' given the right tow vehicle/trailer. It is however probably to big to use as a 'trailer boat'. Some might consider this the best of both worlds - others the worst.

    2.

Make sure it is CE plated as it is a US import. Don't even sniff at it if it isn't.
Do you mean CE plated or RCD coded / HIN Tom? The latter came in in 1997 with some 1996 craft having them but provided that youhave proof of VAT status and that the craft was in the EU before 1.1.97 I believe you are legal.

    3. Fuel is heavy but my figures suggest that Tom's are at the top end of loaded and dirty. Traveling any istance will cost money. However do not forget t view ths from a marginal cost perspective ie the additional fuel over and above a 90hp OB for example. If you do split costs then at 3 v 2 you will probably be costing more but with 4 v 2 I would suggest you start to gain.

    4. Whatever has been suggested I don't think this will sell anywhere near the asking price - if I were a betting man I would suggest that 12750 is all he will get if he wan't to sell before next season. If he really cleans it up he might get 14500 in May.

  13. the bottom surely?

I actually got a cast iron smoke pot and flavour pellets for christmas and cooked a 4lb gammon on the Cobb for NY eve with it - Sugar Maple..............yummy!!!!

Cast iron pot goes directly on the heat source - in this case straight on the coals.

me thinks I may be after some nice quality wood dust from Mr Rich in due course!

  14. Phew what a game all that turned out to be eh!

Recently returned after what seems like a week away just to get out Thursday!

Firstly can I echo the comment re Paul and payback for his sterling efforts on our own open - not ignoring the other contributions of course.

The fish arrived just after the middle of the ebb, and Beowulf (4 cables West) had theirs at about the same time. Paul fought a cagey fight and the only way he was going to loose it was if someone screwed up with the net - glad I didn't (and payback again; for his netting mine last year!)

We estimated 13 on the boat - 13 3 on the scales.

Final results were, as far as I remember them -

    180 odd anglers

    6 Cod

3 to Charter boats (Hooker (Pat Manley) - Beowulf (Nick ?) - Other?

3 to Private boats (all PBSBAC ones........... rolleyes.gif )

This time the cod was a little stupid - and I didn't take this into account - fihs was supposed to grab my small piece of cuttle as an 'starter' before moving on to Paul 'main course' bait - it couldn't have been 10 ft away from it - dumb greedy fish!

Here's a picture taken at the time - if you look really closely you can just see a hint of a smile on the anglers face - trust me this got bigger as the day wore (sic) on!

  15. Sorry to hear that Charlie - however the forecast is now looking very poor for Thursday with the system having speeded up way too much from the look of things!

Wednesday looking stunning for those that can take advantage of it but fresh Southerlies forecast through Thursday will test everyone sad.gif

Still 3 days to go so maybe...............here's hoping!

  16. Not sure why anyone would want a a 110Ah battery over an 85 for starting - does it need cranking for an hour or so each time? rolleyes.gif

Seriously the CCA rating of most vehicle batteries will be fine for an OB but the extra capacity will provide you with the comfort of running the livewell and anchor lights longer and later - come to think of it can't actually think of much on Maverick that would need serious capacity either..........

I wuld get a couple of Makro's 059's I think they are; about
