just name the new one the same...........

or it could be simply leaning into the prevailing breeze. This is extremely common on pilot house boats to the extent that I have even considered fitting the dreaded trim tabs to Phaeton 'cos it's such a pain in certain circumstances. Currently it remains cheaper to (1) move the lead box or (2) tell Dave to move.

Kam, Whilst not on your specific list I have a Toyota Lanndcruiser Colorado 3.0 TD manual and found it a fantastic tow car for the boat. Boat + trailer came in at around 1600kgs (more when heading off with family for self catering holidays!) and it hauled the rig from Loch Lomond to Plymouth, Brittany to Med Spain without any noticable wear - let alone issues.
-
Great news Paul. Glad you are zipping about - even better that fuel comsumption is improved! Phaeton finally went back in on Saturday and a 'shakedown' weekend (scarily) didn't highlight any major problems. Monday morning saw the list shrink to zero and I can now consider the planned 'improvements' rather than continue the fixes!

nope - all I need is (1) to get the damm boat launched, (2) for there to be no leak in the raw water system and (3) to fit new batteries............ however a nice day is always welcome

yep blonde and spotted butterflies - big ones at that! toothed buterflies we used to net long thin butterflies too but don't bother now, preferring to bar 'm off in the water. This will off course have to change when (not if!) the magic 60 is exceeded.......... while I am happy th enet will hold, even with the tope tears, the alloy frame doesn't instill confidence and a longer handle was politely requested by PaulJ in December (after having to be hauled back in by his harness after netting duties on a cod........)

Paul, Have been watching this thread quietly 'cos I don't have an Orkney 520 but feel I have to chuck in a couple of points as you are clearly sufferring at 11knots and want to sort it out! 1. At 11knots a 5.2m boat, with a hull length of less than that clearly, is already planning. It's not capable of travelling through the water in displacement mode much beyond 7knots and, if it did, would be sunk by it's own wake at around 7.5knots. It follows that we are therefore looking at optimising the relationship between the hull and engine from 11knots up (rather than playing around to get it over the resistance hump in the first place) 2. A boat/hull that size is very sensitive to weight distribution in creating the relationship between hull and water first, then when thats right the relationship between engine/transom needs to result in a horizontal thrust from the prop shaft (which if in place will provide near neutral steering moment). This right position can, as just said, be felt through the steering and be seen by the top of the engine cowling being parallel with the water surface. If you don't have power trim then I would set the boat/engine up so that the propshaft is parallel to the aft third of the keel and go from there. However, despite all the above, I would suggest from all the above that your engine is simply not producing it's full power for some reason (and that may include wrong prop).

I could certainly do with the net ring thing - my alloy one isn't going to take many more rays!

Wedger, As said before I would like to try some and am happy to 'commit' any trial packs to the comp on the 22 May - hopefully to mutual advantage! I believe that one of the comps is actually open so you could come out and fish it yourself if that suited you? Duncan

Nice one Mike - I am sure like others you will have hours of fun................ Loved your classy name - seems pretty straight forward on the radio to (which is important - I mean other recent ones around here are going to get the p*** taken something rotten; and that's only if anyone is prepared to answer them!) Re yor suggestion it has everything does that include a livebait well or are you going to use the period up to delivery making one up? Boat owning, like marriage and kids, is worth it in every sense except financial........
-
Yep, Good luck all - from the guy that can't get his boat launched yet..............
-
Not withstanding the boat comments, I can't help feeling that an individual who has agreed to give someone 'first pass' and sticks to that agreement in the face of flying fivers is a gentleman rather than an idiot.
-
Good on you for admitting it...I think!
-
Yep - sry I haven't got back quicker........can see where it's going 'wrong' now.......tube 's about 2 1/2 inchs and the braid loops are 4 +. In the case of the backing you have as much as you need! The tube goes over and well away before you put the line inside the braid as Paul points out. Only then do you bring the tube back into play. Personally I get more fun splicing...........
-
Welcome Tony. Whilst some trips are definitely more enjoyable than others they all end up educational!
-
1. tube over braid 2. line into braid 2" + 3. tube slid back over braid over inserted line what's the problem?
-
Nice site Paul. However, I really don't like that method of splicing 3 strand to chain - whilst it does it's best to avoid chafe you can't really see if it's happening and, worse, no rope likes to be under load on a tight bend like that (you know what happens when you tie braid onto a tiny swivel). This one leaves the warp open so you can quickly see if any damage is happening and avoids the tight turn round the chain link.
-
Ah the old - more wind / more warp classic re jigged! Ever experienced squalls from more than one direction at once in open water?
-
Now come on Paul (Marineboy) I think they were after the new BOAT name, not your's.
-
Looking good Paul. You have choices on the bow roller - as you aren't going to use it to stow the anchor, and have that lovely sampson post, a simple fairlead will do as well. Looks like we will hit the water around the same time - but I bet you get a bream before me! Duncan

Good jobs guys - and theyr was spot on again with the weather! Loved the reference to a 'rollercoaster ride' and 20 knots - if you are doing 20 knots it can't be that bad, even downwind! Having got back yesterday, as posted earlier, I managed to cut and stack 3 trees adn get a good first cut on the grass before the rain eventually arrived at 2000h - so it wasn't all bad.......kidding!
-
Paul, Handbook available 401 Euo Handbook download which should get you a better price (or better value for a club member!)
-
Thanks Paul. For others, who don't have a personal spreadsheet, this online conversion tool (which was originally a link from Bob F I think) is great to use. I have found it invaluable with coordinates of unknown origion to quickly give me alternative positions to check on my plotter; as well as straight forward conversions.
-
OK Paul - which chart numbers would you recomend - having got them? I struggled with their descriptions a bit without a map!

Sam< On the 22nd ust head out to some wrecks and dangle a squid head on a really sound smallish hook..........best of all worlds!
