  1. imo sea check is a brilliant scheme! it costs the recipient nothing and in return gets loads of information on how to fit out a boat with saftey in mind.

     

    Of course there are limits as to what we on small boats can carry and you have to use your own judgement as to what you really need to carry.

     

    So long as there idiots prepared to spend thousands on a loverly looking vessel, put it to sea without a thought as to how he will fare when put in a situation then there is a need for peeps at the other end of the scale to try and balance it out a bit.

    I would agree with all you say except for the length of chain. For several reasons: It has been stated earlier in this thread that the primary reason for having chain is to weight the nose of the anchor so enabling it to be pulled into the ground you are trying to hold in, another reason is the length of chain acts like a shock absorber with the rise and fall of the boat, and as Alan has pointed out you need to counter balance the weight of the anchor when retreiving with an Alderney ring

    I use a 7.5 kilo Bruce with the appropriate chain and generally dont have a problem, if I do it is usually my fault ie: not enough warp let out. The bruce imo is a far better anchor than either the Danforh or the plough, I have used both and found them to be inferior to the Bruce

  5. As i said earlier, it is all about common sense and how safe you feel. I believe that I am safer fishing around the Eddystone or Hands Deep reefs (both about 14 miles offshore) than I am fishing in the waters a couple of miles offshore. This is due to the number of charter and private boats in these areas who would be quick to offer help if any was required, where if in trouble fishing in a less populated area it may be some time before any help would arrive

     

    One of the major benefits of belonging to an active club is that there is safety in numbers. Don't see that on the rnli check list.

     

    I had an RNLI see check done last year at baiter slip. The guy that done my check again found some items on his list that I should be carrying, he did however state that Maverick which has all the safety equipment listed in our own club list was better equiped than any he had seen launched from Baiter slipway

    I tried one of those cheap orbital buffers and although they do the job they do it slowly. I have one and you are quite welcome to borrow it.

     

    By far the quickest way is to use an angle grinder with a polishing/buffing head attachment fitted. A small one would be better for use under the boat as easier to hold up. Dont apply to much pressure let the tool do the work

    I have started stripping Mavericks bottom (no comments from you MM) hence the patchwork look which I think is quiet fetching, well that's my excuse for not finishing the job. I have the same problem as you re: the driveway but a quick blast with the pressure washer and it was sorted

  8. There is some concern regarding developments on Sunday with regards to a complex depression and secondary depression (one of which is the remnants of Hurricane Lisa) crossing the UK.

    An ordinary gps will do the job of navigation but you have to input all the waypoints/marks yourself. Most of us used to run on gps alone as plotters were not around then, and to be fair it worked fine. When plotters hit the market I thought no way am I going to pay for one of those new fangled things but peer pressure finally made me give in and I got the latest must have toy. WOW what a difference. Its just like having an electronic chart there in front of you. You can look at the chart put your cursor on a fishy looking bit of ground and go to it. If the fog comes in you can easily navigate your way back home whether you have input waypoints or not, cause you you have the chart there in front of you.

    Regarding price, it depends on your budget all I will say is that colour is better than monochrome and you should try and buy as big a screen as you can afford. On the smaller screens your unit will need to rewrite more frequently.

     

    Regarding anchors most of us around this way use a Bruce style. These are very good for holding in all types of bottom except for very rough ground, a 5 kilo Bruce would suit your boat. For very rough ground a fishermans or grapnell would be best. You should have at least one boat length of suitable chain 6 metres for your boat would be fine and at least 3 times the depth you intend to fish. I would suggest that 10mm warp would suit you or maximum 12mm thick. Bear in mind the more rope you buy the cheaper it becomes, I usually buy a whole coil which is 220 metres. If you source it from a supplier that serves commercial fishermen you should be able to buy it very cheaply. An Alderney ring (available mail order)and 30/35cm bouy would complete your anchor needs.
