Hi Adam
Been meaning to ask do you have a keel band on BW?
If so did it help save the boat in anyway?
If not would it have helped?

Hi all
Well we have got some temporary accommodation now in Warmwell.
Nice and cheap, thank goodness but due to an Estate Agents cock up they lost a house we put an offer on so it is back to the drawing board.
At least we have decided on an area but finding a suitable property that we can afford is a nightmare!!!
Thanks to everyone you helped with suggestions it was most helpful.
We think we are due to move down on the week-end of 13th Nov so I will miss the November club meeting but hope to come to the Christmas bash and put faces to the names.
Thanks again everyone

Hi Superm
Check out my web site for what others think about their equipment.
At least if will give you a start
http://fishing_boats.tripod.com/
It is always worth checking Ebay for gear as it can save you some money if it is all there and working.

Hi Charlie
The reverse applies for a diesel, my car engine is a 1.9 turbo and produces 125+ bhp but revs up to 4500 rpm, boat engines seem to be huge for a modest bhp but the revs are much lower.
I suppose it all come down to torque in the end.

Hi Billyboy
Sounds like you ended up with a very reasonable day but what is a "Bandfish"?
Never heard of one of those.
As I am about to move down that way, in temp accomadation, any tips for marks in Portland harbour apart from the Hood, would be very helpful.
I have launched at the public slip a few times but never been able to get out far due to weather conditions or crew feeling ill.

Hi all
What interests me is where they tip all the spoil.
If they just dump it in the same area this will attract fish as a new haven with any luck unless the tides are strong around there in which case it will soon be dispersed.
Suggest that anyone who sees a dredger in the area if and when they get the go ahead should let it be known so others can investigate.

Thought this might be of interest to some
--------------------
RENEWED plans have been floated for dredging Christchurch Harbour and dumping the spoil on Stanpit March and Mudeford Sandbank.
An earlier bid to get Christchurch council's consent as landowner foundered over fears the dredging could open the harbour and river to larger vessels and muddy the waters for spawning salmon and other wildlife.
But these fears have been dismissed by the borough's former coast protection officer Frank Tyhurst who has drawn up the dredging scheme on behalf of the Christchurch Harbour Association and Bournemouth & West Hants Water Company.
He said the operation to dredge some 1,000 cubic metres of material from the sandbar in the middle of the harbour and a similar amount from around the water company moorings at Tuckton Bridge had been planned in consultation with English Nature and the Environment Agency.
The work was needed to remove natural silting up of the navigable channel through the harbour and depositing the spoil - mainly sand - on the eroded Grimbury Marsh at Stanpit Marsh and the Mudeford Sandbank was considered more environmen-tally friendly than dumping at sea or in landfill sites.
Planning applications for the dredging have been made to both Bournemouth and Christchurch councils and if approved the work is scheduled to take place over the winter before the annual salmon migration begins.
Boatyard boss Charles Rossiter, chairman of the Christchurch Harbour Association consortium, said: "It is a pity that this small amount of essential maintenance work has become political. All we are trying to do is make sure the harbour is safe to navigate for the present users.
"We are certainly not seeking to encourage bigger boats here, you would need to dredge the offshore bar for that. We have prepared a very detailed environmental impact assessment which suggests that there is no detriment to the nature conservation value of the harbour."

Guys, reading through this thread, may I ask a question?? Is there a magnetic variation on charts, as there is on OS maps?? If yes, how much do you allow for vairiation when plotting to your systems on board? Sorry if its been covered before.
Rich
Hi Rich
Yes there is information on the magnetic variance shown on the map, see the compass rose on any admiralty chart. This was about the 7 degree mark in the UK but this does change over the years and position in the world.
The important thing is that you must decide what format you intend to use, i.e. 'Magnetic' or 'True' positional co-ordinates.
The Coastguard's seem to use 'True' readings i.e 45 degrees 'True' of Poole entrance, however you must set your GPS up for 'Magnetic' or 'True'.
You can always change from 'True' to 'Magnetic' or visa versa on the GPS/Plotter without re-entering co-ordinates.
Remember that if you use a compass to go in a direction this will ALWAYS be in 'Magnetic' and if your GPS is set up for 'True' settings it will show a small differance.
This all sounds a bit confusing having re-read my message but in the end you must decide which setting you will use and set the rest of your electronics to the same.

Hi Mark
Thanks for the offer but we are looking for at least a 4 bed house as we are having the "In-laws" moving in with us!
It has been agreed that they will have their part of the house and we the other.
To find a house which has at least 2 reception rooms (to convert one into a bedroom) and the main front door in the middle of the house are far and few about especially when looking to park a boat and trailer plus cars!!!
But I will email you in case the FPO thinks this is what we want!

1.) Radar Reflector - essential kit
2.) MOB Recovery equipt. (Harness, strops etc)
3.) Life raft / inflatable dingy
4.) Fire Blanket
5.) Dan Bouy
6.) LM / FM Radio reciever
7.) EPIRB
8.) Emergancy Ariel
9.) Hand Bearing Compass
10.) Binoculars
11.) Shapes (at anchor etc..)
Nevertheless, it was free and was interesting to hear it from their point of view. If you can spare an hour, give the RNLI a call, after all its free.
Hi,
I agree with Eddie that small boats can not carry all what they suggest, however
This is the Club's safety list:
VHF Radio
CB Radio
1 Lifejacket per person
Towrope
In date flares
Horse shoe ring -----------------------RNLI Check
First Aid Kit
Auxiliary engine
Anchor, chain +warp
Spare warps
2nd Anchor + warp
GPS / Navigator
Torch
Echo sounder
Fire extinguisher of appropriate category -----What about capacity?
Radar reflector ------------------------RNLI Check
Compass ------------------------------RNLI Check
Horn / whistle
Fuses (where appropriate)
Tool kit
Bailer
Timepiece ---------------------- Standard on most GPS & Plotters
Navigation lights (working)
Relevant chart
So it seems the club has thought of most things.
A radio may be useful but it is nice to get away from music/phones and noise when fishing, at least I think it is
Under the regs you are supposed to show a ball shape when at anchor, BUT and this is a BIG but "How many yachts do you see with a motor cone raised when under power EVEN when their sails are up?" I have only ever seen one and I have since found out it was a training yacht so I suppose they have to do the "right thing"
I will get off my soap box now

Hi Eddie
I think you are right about Nicole, I don't want to get a name for myself BEFORE I move!
Some of the guys here are due to go up on a trip to meet Davy's pets!
Best not to tell them too much on how you got on!
Looking forward to your comments

Hi Guys and Gals
As you know I am about to move down in the next month
Until we have found the right property we are going to rent but it needs to be fairly cheap!
I wondered if any of you know of any holiday homes that let out during the winter on a short term lease?
If any ideas please PM/Email me.
Thanks for any help

Coddy!!!......see mine,
It was fiited by Warrior at the factory, so it must be right - dont go drilling any holes! - Ill PM you in the next day or so with the measurements and a photo. It is on the port side, high up level with the bilge skin fitting on the starboard side.
Adam
PS - it was a blessing in disguise...during my little 'incident' on Sun, the bracket got wedged against a huge wooden post, stopping the boat from going right over and protecting my new engine! - see they have more than one use!
Hi Adam
Thanks for the info, will look forward to the deatils on BW.
I havn't had a chance to work on the boat for a week or three as I seem to be travelling around a lot at work.
Drove up to Scotland last Tuesday then down to Birmingham Thursday and Cardif Friday!
Anyone wants to buy my car?
2yrs old 108,000+ miles
Will have to wait for another 2yrs when the lease runs out...... expected milage 200,000+ miles. Engine will be well run in by then.
Off to Gibraltar on Tuesday for a 24hrs then Barcelona for 3 days!
Shame I have to work!
