  1. Thanks Rob, your welcome anytime...!!

There seemed to be a reasonable plan - to fish over the last of the ebb on the patch, and head over to peverill for the slack for a few drifts, then settle down for the Bream on the flood....

It was cold and lifeless on the first attempt on the patch, and the fresh wind was numbing to say the least. unsure.gif

Luckily, the second part of the plan was better, the wind dropped for a good few hours and in the sunshine we had early summer jumbo mackeral and our own sealife Dolphin display... fantastic creatures... Rob spotted them making their way up from Durlston due to the cloud of seagulls overhead.

They did a good job of rounding up the mackerel, then shot under the boat, leaving us to get back to feathering up the remains of the shoal rolleyes.gif

We then anchored up in the chosen spot, and fished for the Bream for a couple of hours. Rob was first in, with a decent fish of around 2lb... the first of a dozen fish, a mixture of blue 'boys' and some 'dont knows'. We kept some of the larger ones, and the rest went back...

Then quite suddenly, the bites dried up, maybe the tide had just slackened too much. At any rate we were keen for an early bath, so we headed back in, pausing for the dolphin show in the Swash... jeese, I hope these guys dont play here in the summer with all the boat traffic!!!

Still waiting to hear if anyone wants to take the lead on a fishing plan, maybe just for Sat.

If Wendy wants to stay ashore, I should have room for a couple more for the fishing, if they want to join us on the Sat.

Leaving what people want to do as they head there and back down to them.

Remember some will have the better half onboard

  3. Hi Chaps,

Has anyone a 4HP - pref 4-stroke short shaft for me to borrow for a trial on my inflatable - one evening perhaps....

One trip is all it would need, as i'm comparing it to the 2HP I've got currently.

    Paul

  4. Very Nice Boat !!!!!....... we are talking of the one behind the inflatable arent we ?? laugh.gif

You may find that the sheer enjoyment of the twin engines outweighs the prospect of managing on one. Two engines will get you up on the plane much faster, then you can throttle back so they are running sweetly - the economy will be better than running a single at nearly full throttle. The only downside is the servicing sad.gif and getting the same output from both.

    Have great Fun in Her.

  5. Yep, I got bored waiting and bought the Ikom MC35, Bouyant and long battery life.

Fantastic reception, and easy to use.

    Paul.

I understand there's not much discount available on handhelds so may be best to shop around yourself.

  6. Hi Mike,

I had the same problem with a newish 2hp 4 stroke Yam. They said there was some poop in the jets..... and it gets in there due to topping up.

Ran in the tank OK, but then under load opening up the throttle more than 1/2 way and it would conk out ... very annoying....

    Hope you get it sorted

    Paul

  7. For my trailer re-furbishment, I'm considering replacing the galv/ plated washers on the rollers with Nylon ones, as the previous lot rusted out in no time and the added friction stops the rollers doing what they are supposed to do.

Only problem is I cant find less than 100's of washers, M20 (suit 19mm roller axle) at 20 -

  8. Guys, all your concerns for my trailer are really heartfelt.... and are choking me up...

No - not yet (bearing savers)

    No- not yet (stainless cables)

I will put the former on before it even touches the ground again, and the latter are still quite new and servicable.

By the way, Looking recently at Charlies pictures of Hubs etc

I was told not to grease the double lock style brake shoes, as this can prevent them from 'rolling off' when you pull forward ??

Also I've also been told not to grease wheel studs, just keep them wire brushed and clean.

    Paul

  9. No Problem by me Ian, it saves me having to email you the files.

Many Thanks for running the course and all the helpful advice during the day, I really enjoyed it!

One point I meant to ask on the day, which is kind of covered in the book, is more about techniques for survival without a liferaft - as most of us dont have the luxury.

ie maximising your chance of being picked up after going in the water.

If you went in voluntarily, then you could take a small grab bag, and with your floating VHF and flares.... presumably these would work even when wet ?

If you went in by accident on your own, there wouldnt be much you could do until rescued by a third party, so any thoughts here on what you could do ?

    Regards

    Paul

  10. Yes Jim!!!

very good - it took a while to sink in...

I sourced the bearings from Hendersons in Ringwood - just round the corner from me.

Currently hameriting like crazy, but then re-assembling at the end of the week!!

This is what happens without any flushing, after just a few dips in the briny, and a year lying in the yard. The brake action was non existant (siezed)

Whole lot has gone in the bin. weep.gifweep.gif

  13. I'm just about to fit something similar to the Hub duck, cost 25p... from inexcess. Charlie A has already done this on his sheltie. although ours are plastic they look identical to the the hub duck ie just a nozzle without any sprayjets.

The Hub duck fits into the brake shoe inspection hole, with a back nut ? But i'm going to run a tap into the backplate, using the kit Charlie A lent me last night.

They also seem to claim its a selling point not giving you the tubing to join both hubs up to a common hozelock fitting, so you end up kneeling on the ground to do this. Still simple enough to fit some garden hose with cable ties.

  14. Ooh...... blink.gifblink.gif

Gordon/ Terry sounds like you have cracked it.. I'm still on the learning curve.

Today stripped down one side, and perhaps I'll post some photos as well to show what it lookes like without the flush kit.

In may 2008 I had new bearings and brake shoes, the trailer has done less than 50 miles and been sitting in the dinghy park slowly "rusting in peace"

    perhaps you get the picture.....

  17. Lovely day to be out, which turned out sunnier than expected.... biggrin.gif

Fishing all round was slow judging by the chat on Ch6.

We arrived at our chosen mark shortly before Joint Venture, but as we have seen before....boats started arriving.....Craig and jackie on Gas and Colin and Bobi... joining in.. We forgot to say that this mark was only 100m across so fitting 4 boats on it wasnt going to work!

Nothing doing here, only one pout and a small codling after a few hours, and whilst the flood had been going for an hour or so, we went in search of bigger tides and a feature.

We found our next spot on a bank south of the Needles, and the tide was moving much stronger here- we were quickly up to 1 1/4lb leads, but the bites started coming steadily -first a Conger to me -so neatly hooked in the mouth, it came off on the surface at the back of the boat -this was arround 20lb..then a small blond ray... whiting.... then a slightly larger thornback, then crunch.... a good bite and its staying deep, and up comes a lovely Cod of 10lb 6oz - its stomach hard with crabs and full of roe.

Then its Alun, reaching for his Rod.. he's into a good fish on the baited feathers rig.. and its a prime Bass - so fat and in good condition...almost 11lb, followed shortly after with another Cod of 5-6lb. Conditions were a little bouncy for weighing fish!! (until we got back to the marina). Maybe Alun will report the true weight..

So a really enjoyable day, some fish to show for the effort, and a good start to the species hunt.

    Paul
