I was out early on Friday, so missed the comp....but at least could get out for a play. Ballard seemed devoid of bream whilst on the ebb (I should have known this!)....and the mackerel on peverill were scattered...but at least a few baits. Then off to a bank SE and had a good few small tope..nothing big but good fun all the same. Amongst all the doggies a bonus turbot..plate sized only but very welcome. Pity just the one, but worth trying for next time. Well done to all those who fished.

Hi Adam Just logged in - looking to see how you got on, expecting to see lots of smiling and sunburned faces with plenty of superb catch pictures to go with it, and what a shock! As others have said, its a bitter pill to swallow, but at least the buddy system worked exceptionally well and you were all back safely, no external damage to JV, and at least you know she can be fixed given time and effort. Really sorry for you, considering all the prep time it takes for such a trip. Hope you get it diagnosed soon and its not too serious. Regards Paul

Had a great day round at Ballard..first fish to Alun, then my first of the day 3lb 9oz... Straightaway after setting the anchor, I lost my bucket over the side, watched it go downtide until it was a pin-prick size. Doh!! An hour later it had re-appeared !! but right inshore and still un-reachable. Once we were surrounded by the other boats, we were all spinning around the anchor as the wind beat the feable tide, so we decided with a couple of good fish in the box, and only smaller ones coming over the side to make an early return. By now the bucket had crabbed its way back along the shore line and was heading towards swanage beach, so we zoomed round and picked this up on route. Felt really warm for the first time this year in the sunshine! Well done to everyone who made the effort..and were rewarded with a few fish. Paul

My replacement waders arrived today, but I ordered a size bigger than normal - and they are massive (for me). These are "koala" waders cost 47.50 incl postage. They are great quality - no problems there, so I will order some more of a smaller size. But before I go to the effort of posting them back - if anyone wants them.... Hi Allan, When I upgraded, I went for the Raymarine e7D, its both touch screen and has a rotary control at the side. I dont think it makes alot of difference when it gets bumpy in my boat, its just as hard to operate the screen in either mode and look where you are going, so I dont find the touch screen at all a disadvantage. Also, would you use any plotter without at least wiping your hands quickly on a towel ?? i suppose if it were an open boat and you had gloves on, then you'd use the rotary control more. Lastly, the screen is a massive improvement in the angle of view and brightness from my last 10 year old plotter, so a swivel mount just isnt necessary anymore. Hope this helps! Paul

Great day today to be out - in fact the only day looking at the weather forecasts! Alun offered me a seat for a spot of bassing - tides too strong for a Cod trip and shortage of water at Christchurch was the decider for us. Live baits were hard to find , so we set about the drifts with a few frozen baits Alun had up his sleeve.. after a while with no takes and a quick change of plan saw us heading further out - towards a flock of birds diving. Alun had three hook ups before I could even get a lure in the water, but then I managed a couple of bass on a sidewinder. Then just as soon as the birds appeared, they'd gone. We had a few more drifts, with a couple more small bass - some on mackerel feathers, and then decided to go back to drifting in the first spot. This produced eventually, on our frozen baits - two reasonable bass to me -largest 6lb 9oz, and Alun had similiar success, until landing this clonker which went 11lb 1oz - on a float fished frozen deadbait on the last drift, last minute of the day. We met up with PJ on marineboy - having a bit of physio therapy, and Clive (livebait) hopefully they enjoyed their day as much as we did, and glad we didnt go chasing the Cod, when the bass are still arround and in such good condition.

As I sat there at the 'after' Open. completely knackered from doing nothing (but happy!) ...Our organisers still had a certain fishing boat to haul out the slipway in the dark... before they could go home. Brian, I'd be surprised if you could get any sense out of the Insurance company as to what constitutes a suitable lock. As long as there is a lock which cannot be removed other than with considerable force then that seems good enough. If you do all the other things, like take a photo of your deterent, and record all the serial numbers etc - what more could you reasonably do ? I lock my dinghy to the mooring complete with the outboard, then go fishing all day. I'm not saying that someone couldnt cut the chain and nick the whole lot - but that is why I am insured - so I dont have to worry. I couldnt believe after I got done for 5K, that the insurer didnt insist on me fitting an alarm - they thought that as long as there was some lock, that was sufficient. There was no lock on the outboard cover, and this accounted for over 1K of the repair bill. I dont know of many engine covers which are lockable, infact the actual cover for a big Yamaha is worth a fortune!! Unfortunately, if you want to enjoy your fishing, all the effort of lumping every bit of gear back and forward each time just in case you get something stolen destroys the pleasure of just turning up and going. Once we get our Police commissioner, we should make our point as a club as to where the boating community places its policing priorites. Paul
