Just been on the phone to Guernsey.....he boys are back on dry land. They fished in atrocious conditions today - F5-6 gusting F7, James said they were taking waves over the 39' Interceptor whilst on the drift!! He didnt give too many details as they we about to go into the official presentation,but...... They started drfiting a wreck, James took an early lead and held it until 11.30 when the changed boat positions. It was then a close run contest between Jim Whippy, James and a guy called Mick. James lost two 2lb plus bream at the side waiting for the net. Main species caught were Pout, Pollock, Bream, Scad and Garfish. Coming into the final few minutes it was still too close to call, Jim and Mick landed a few more bream and James had another....... Although the final results have yet to be announced, Jim Whippy (BFM editor) looks to have clinched the win, James thinks he has 3rd place. He comes back into Poole at 1.30pm tommorow so Ill know the final results then!

Basically whatever you wear on a small boat during cold weather matters little when you hit the water. We spend about 2 hours in a heated swimming pool (32c) and I was cold when we got out - I had a full floation suit on and a lifejacket. When they made waves it was struggle keeping my face dry and getting into the liferaft was near on impossible. Try that in a F8 with 5c seas!!

Food: As all of the regular crew on BW know, its bacon and egg sarnies with plenty of hot sea and the occasional soup. A new one for the all day cod trips this year is canned Chilli con Carne, or spag bol!!!

My thoughts based on the fact I get very cold, very easily. Always go 2 piece. You get a double layer around the mid section and the flexabilty is a bonus. Often during autumn / spring Ill wear the salopettes and a fleece. I have the Imax suit also, and tend to use it when it is very cold as it is a very warm suit. Sure, you can sweat a little as it is not breathable, but when its 5c or below it is pretty good. Also they are relitivly cheap so I dont mind getting it covered in cuttle ink etc...if it lasts 2 or 3 seasons then it has been worth it. Secondly I have a set of Musto waterproofs that are worn for offshore yachting. They fit much, much better than the floatation suits are 100% waterproof and are breathable. I can wear these all day without getting the slightest bit sweaty. I wear a life jacket over the top if I deem nessasary and it is still not as bulky as the floatation suit. Downsides. They are about 3 times the price of a floatation suit. They get dirty easily and due to the nature of Goretex (or smiliar - HPX in Musto) it gets ground it and even a washinf machine struggles to get it out - they therefore end up looking rather shabby of not taken care off. They also require a decent level of undergarmets if it is very cold. Basically I chop and change depending on the conditions. The breathable gear comes on the boat all year round as it is so small and light, the Imax gets used cold winter codding. Lastly - my feet are the worst for feeling the cold. Skee Tex - no matter what anyone says, I have tried them all and nothing beats these. If Rannaulf Feinnes thought they were good enough to go to the pole, them they are good enough for me. Is this still on? I know weather isnt looking great, just havent heard much talk of the comps recently? Also, having not been out on the boat for almost 5 weeks I am getting itchy!! Why is the weather always so crap this time of year! The long range shows no let up until the mid Nov!!

KAM: Was typing too fast and meant fresh (sea) water...not freshwater as in out of the tap. I dont mind doggies to eat although there are plenty of other fish I would rather have. Skinning is a royal pain, but trying filleting them as you would a round fish. You loose hardly any meat. Cook with the skin on and it simply falls away when cooked. It has a fairly string taste...but worth trying once.

James is a bit tied up at the moment with the new addition to the family...he is even considering selling DR! ........ He leaves for St Peter port tommorow morning at 7ish (am) The comp is fished all day tommorow, and they return to England on Sunday afternoon. The forecast is better than at the beginning of the week, but still far from ideal. Looking at windguru - they give 11 knots on Friday morning building to 28 knots on Sunday afternoon. Still James says he perfers snotty conditions as it sorts the men from the boys! His biggest fear is Jim Whippy....who as we all know fishes regulary with the england team and is a dab hand at species hunting. I think the rules are: a species hunt, no limit to the specie caught, but a minimum size of 200mm (i think?) applies. Species are likey to be bream, pout,wrasse and pollock, but bass, flats mackerel etc are all likey to feature. GOOD LUCK JIMBO!!

NOPE!! James had one onboard DR. Yes they are lightweight but get a decent fish and they bend easily. The mesh is OK, dries fast as hooks easy to get out, but aviod if you want a strong hardwearing net. I have one of these and I think it is superb - it has netted 50lb eels and 31lb cod with ease. http://www.shakespeare-fishing.co.uk/Product32.asp?line=7905 Not a fantastic picture, but it also has an aluminium handle and frame, but much stronger. The mesh is green heavy duty nylon.

Conger are actually very worthwhile targeting during the comp as 100% is only 40lb. Keeping them alive is the tricky bit. We used a large continental carp sack which we tethered to the stern cleat, this kept the fish alive all day and its in the dark also. Coming back a large bin or drum filled with freshwater or a livebait tank will keep it alive long enough for the run back. Last year we didnt have the latter and as we got caught out in snotty conditions it took longer to get back, the eel died about 2 miles from shore. Personally I think their are many other fish that taste better than an eel, but if you have a dead one on your hands then have a taste. My advice - if you dont think you can get it back alive and dont want to eat it, put it back - is it really worth the prize money??? Failing that, pout and doggies are worth targetting!!!

Duncan, Stainless Peter made me one of the quality stainless steel jobbies last year and I also havent managed to source net for it yet. I have tried trawl netting but it makes the whole unit so damn heavy.... Anyway - in the meantime I have bought a cheap Shakespeare job, and whilst it isnt anywhere near as strong as the SS one, it is light, smaller and more compact - therfore I have decided to keep this one and not bother with the SS one. If you want it you are welcome for the price I paid......you can have it with the fender I promised! Then all you need is some netting! Adam

I simply booked mine through East Dorset Adult Learning on the web. Worth bringing up at the next club meeting - Martin and I were discussing a large scale course and as the club has so much excess cash it would be a great idea (last comment made tounge firmly in cheek before the comments start!! )

Terry, although you have the Bigfoot so a slightly larger prop than mine - a new one would be about 60-70 quid I think. Prop Rev. have done a few repairs for me and never charged over

Take them off and try them, see if difference. They may work they may not - it depends on the boat. Yes you will loose top end speed, but it may make the boat plane quicker and hold the sea better - it did on Tara.
