Well, given that it seems to be accepted that there is no reasonable excuse NOT to have a SEA Safety Check....
...is it therefore reasonable for the club to expect all members to have a Check on a regular basis, say every three years?
In a word - YES. The emphasis being on 'expect' and not 'must'
Quite simply this sums up my feelings. If it goes to must I would be against it.

So the idea is to have a 200hp diesel onboard to run your heating system, and a 10hp diesel which you have your commercial liceance under on which to power the boat!
-
Good luck with the sale Dave.
Are you giving up the boat owning game or trading to something else?

They are good Billy - I always carry a few....but.... you cant put them on afterwards like you can a powergum waterknot? I.e they need to be the firstt item on the trace whatever you are using them for. A waterknot can be added afterwards.
Another use for the knot is for attaching a dropper as an afterthought, commonly used for tying droppers when fly fishing, I quite often whack one on my cod or big fish trace if other smaller fish are around like whiting.

No 1 for me Mike...... with a bit of no.2 and no. 10!!
I cant see any reason againt the RNLI seacheck. It's free and ultimatly aims to save your life!
That said, when I joined PBSBAC it was mandatory to have a safety check. The commitee deemed it too ownerous on the club should an accident happen as it was agreed that the mandatory check said that the club were taking ownership of saftey issues. IMO it is a good thing that it is now optional.
If it became mandatory I would be put off. I like the easy going, consenting adults atmosphere of the club and I feel this is a step away from this.
Finally, you state above the amount of replies vs members in the club, we need to keep sight of the variation in membership.... we have members who have had boats for over 60 years and members that have had boats for less than 60 days! our approach needs to reflect this and I think that the stirling job you have been doing combined with the option of a seacheck fits the bill nicely.
Just my 2p worth.

Happy Birthday Dean!
Have a good one tonight.

I have just read that it has now been announced that Red Diesel for pleasure use in boats will be subject to the full 60p of tax from Nov 1st?
Is this true? If so I'll have to think carefully before the new purchase!
That will make it, what -

Mike,
You wont go wrong with any unit from the main manufacturers - Garmin, Navman, Lowrance (Eagle) Raymarine, Furnuo etc..
Garmin, Navman and Lowrance probably have the biggest leisure following in our size and boat useage.
Furuno, Simrad and Raymarine are all starting to go towards commercial use and whilst are still leisure units, they arent as intuative as the ones above.
Size wise - I know what you mean. Personally I managed a 10.5" plotter for your budget - just, but had to add the charts - another

This applies to our club boats then peter? How far out does it cover and until when?
Does this mean that anyone catching cod mid-channel this spring is breaking the law?
If so - how are they communicating this to the leisure sector??
-
Cant make the 17th Mike - up for the March one though.

Maybe.... just maybe....
On a serious note - if I dont take 'my boat' over I'd be happy to crew and show the area's etc that fish - Ive been over a few times now so whilst no expert managed a decent haul last time we went solo without a charter.
I can also go midweek at short(ish) notice and would be happy to go with just one or two boats.

WoW!! I havent seen a window like that for ages!
If it holds, the decordating will have to wait - I'll be out in OotB.
Fingers crossed.

You don't run the livetank 24/7
I do! If you use a smaller draw pump like a rule or attwood, they draw so little that they can be run all day without a problem. They are also much quieter than a bif deck pump, and rated to run continuously, plus if they break it's

I agree Paul.
Mine is set up as a full time deck wash and a bloomin' good jo it does too - very powerful, but with a Hozelok spray end I can adjust the flow with the lever to gentle for when cleaning the catch etc.
I use a Rule 500 bilge pump which is attached to the transom for my bait well, moves a good quantity of water without too much pressure - perfect for a bait well.

"Mr Average" - I suppose that's us lot - dont know whether thats a compliment or not!!
Nice one Tom.

Trev,
Galeforce Marine do pumps very, very similar
to Jabsco's at half the price.
Ive been running one all year on OOtb and been very happy with it. They sell through Ebay and are very helpful.

Bob,
There's plenty of gear knocking around here destined never to be used again....
I have a mat somewhere.... loads of end tackle. I have sold my Delkims, but I'm sure I can help him out.
You can pick it up when you pop over...

PM sent - interested if you go outside, if not I'll take mine. Cant handle floundering!

Me please.

Now, somebody tell me how wrong I've been all these years and how crap they really are.
Youre wrong - they are crap - there you go!!
Seriously, they are cracking reels and I agree 100% with Terry, you could do alot worse.
-
Depends on what you want to use it for.
A fixed spool is usually best as it allows very light end tackle to be used, a mutliplier needs a bit of weight to get the spool turning.
I used small 5500 size multipliers on my spinning rods, but then I use them for Bream mainly and they are on the heavier side.
Shimano do some decent fixed spools to suit all budgets. Personally I also like a front drag for sea fishing, it gives a smaller more compact reel and the drag is easier to use when playing a fish.

On the contrary - I make the run mid channel half a dozen times of year in mine, but lets not get bogged down by details, a 17" Poole Canoe is a vastly different boat to a 17" Warrior or similar, it can be done saftely provided a little thought it given.
No, and no-one has suggested that it is, far from it. Every post on this thread has been to support this issue. As far as I can see the issue seems to be with the mandatory - 'You must' attitude that is being suggested. Ill not post anymore to this thread, but these are my views.
May I suggest setting up a poll? Lock it down to replies to stop another long thread. This gives you a chance to canvas the members anonymously??
