Any expert splicers wanting to do a demo at a club meeting? Or does any one want to join me and Tom in a Shoddy Splicers splinter group? Mad Mike PS I claim 5 bonus points for 'S' alliteration on a miserable Monday morning! Oops there I go again!!

Quote.....Mike are you volunteering to do the tutorial ??? No way Charlie, as I said I am by no means a master splicer, mine work OK but at odd times through the splice I loose my way and the finished artical looks a bit uneven. What I would like to learn is how to make really neat seaman like ones. I used to be able to do it 50 years ago as a kid in Cornwall but I have lost the knack over the years through lack of practice Same with knots too, I used to do all the fancy ones, Monkey Fists, Clover Leaves and all that but I can't remember all of it these days. But then he wouldn't mind what bloody colour it was, and and how would he know if I lied and said it was green when it was blue see Mr Shmarty pants nernernerner Mad Mike

Quote.....Mike, they are independant units; http://www.nauticusinc.com/smart_tabs.htm Clever little beggers aren't they! Not too expensive either and I can see how they would help a heavily loaded boat up on the plane. As for anode protection now Iv'e seen what they are I think it would be a total waste of time and money. The boats that need protection are the ones at rest in relativly still salt water like a marina. The manufacturers will say an anode should be fitted to protect their interest from spurious warrantee claims. Mad Mike
-
If they are actuated by electric motors directly through gearing then it might be an idea to protect them with an anode, sort of overkill though for a trailered boat. If they are actuated by hydraulic rams which have pressure produced by an electric motor and the supply of HP fluid to the ram is via rubber HP hose than there s no need to earth them out via an anode. Mad Mike PS I would not think there was any point on putting them on the Orkney in fact they might induce porpoising which is sommat you don't wanna do on porpoise

Oh boy Tom have you got it right about odd questions and total nutters. Just sold a hot tub. Adverrtised on ebay with complete set of colour pictures........ Question from nut case...What colour is it? Mad Mike

The scam is ........ In the body of their fake email is an invitation to 'Join Paypal now' . Clicking it leads you on to the scammers site which looks like a genuine regestering site for paypal and you are asked to load your debit/credit card details. You are promptly robbed! The best defence is to load the Ebay tool bar this has built in scam protection and warns you if you are not on a genuine Ebay or Paypal site. Mad Mike

I had the sailing version of the Spinny which was called a Skua as 'my other boat' for a time. An amazing little sea boat, when I used it with a 7.5hp outboard it would cork over big waves at the most alarming angles but never ever took a drop of water over the bow. Mad Mike

That's exactly what I do Mike. It has never jambed in the Alderney hoop and I think that there is much less chance of wear through abraision using this method. More to the point on splicing in general. It is a very good skill to master. One can join one rope end to another to lengthen any warp, one can step up/down in diameter by splicing say 10mm to 14mm. I am by no means a master splicer and I think it could make a very good tutorial for one of the club meetings. (bring your own fid !) Mad Mike

Ebay have now banned the use of Western Union money transfers I believe, certainly there are very firm warnings against useing them and other BAXT transfers. Ebay is safe however and as said has indemnity up to

quote......I have a withy 495 Reg would that be a With 495? It's a damn good boat origionaly designed in Scandinavia hence the name With which is pronounced Wit. The designe was taken up by a Devon company http://www.willsmarine.co.uk/products/bonwitco/ IMO one of the best open boats for fishing/family. Mad Mike

but do bear in mind thats's only about 6 to 8lb under water. Actualy it's the friction of draging your whatever weight over the bottom that slows you down. Adam mentioned useing a droug but although this would work against wind affected drift it wont work against tide affected drift as both the boat and the droug will be affected by the water current in the same way. To slow one down over a tidal drift you would have to use a weight draging on the bottom. I use a 1m length of scaffold pole. Mad Mike

The Centers for Disease Control has issued a warning about a new virulent strain of Sexually Transmitted Disease. The disease is contracted through dangerous and high-risk behavior. The disease is called Gonorrhea Lectim, (pronounced "gonna re-elect him.") > Many victims contracted it in 2004, after having been screwed for the past four years. Cognitive characteristics of individuals infected include: anti-social personality disorders, delusions of grandeur with messianic overtones, extreme cognitive dissonance, inability to incorporate new information, pronounced xenophobia and paranoia, inability to accept responsibility for own actions, cowardice masked by misplaced bravado, uncontrolled facial smirking, ignorance of geography and history, tendencies towards evangelical theocracy, categorical all-or-nothing behavior. > Naturalists and epidemiologists are amazed at how this destructive disease originated only a few years ago from a bush found in Texas. Be a real marine chav and get reflective mirror film stuck on them, alloys on the trailer and a boom box in the cuddy. Keep it real man, no wot eyes mean skin. Mad Mike

I have to agree with Tom in that Marlin fishing is highly overated, in fact unless one is fishing the Gulf of Cortez between Mexico and Calif' the chance of any one particular person on a bill fish charter trip of landing one is extremely remote as the the number of strikes in a day is very low, maybe only one or two, therefore with a 5 man charter 3 will never hold a rod! The problem is that bill fishing is at the glamorous end of our sport and is a lot of folks 'dream' so there is a clamour to 'go for Marlin' , it is only at the end of an expensive day with nothing but a sea trip in return that they realise that it aint all it's reckoned to be. Rough ground bottom fishing with plenty of ground bait/rubberdubby in an area with Grouper, Snapper, Triggers etc can wreck your arms after a coupe of hours, infact a big Grouper can take upwards of an hour to bring in. There USED to be Sandbanks Yacht Co moorings that I believe Pete used which is just along from North Haven Lake clubs moorings. NHL has good facilities but they can be a funny lot and are VERY clique-y. The property company that bought the SBYC property are I believe offering moorings to the origional clients but offer no facilities or parking and are charging a higher rental. Mad Mike

Jack you will not be able to use Sickaflex in the way you want as it is too thick. Also once opened it has a very limited shelf life. I would try Trevors suggestion first. Or if your ffloor is 'Neoprene' then a good quality super glue would do the do. Mike

That's disparate Den from the Sith Ifrican comic the Beno is it Sam? Mad Mike

Cheapest swinging moorings in Poole are I think Davis's at SANDBANKS. Not the one next to Cobbs. They are near (next to Royal Motor Yacht Club). But there is no parking nearby in the summer unless you get there at sparrows. And you need your own dinghy. Mad Mike

Apparantly 35/64th of the population favour decimalisation, but the other 0.4 don't. and I could not fail to disagree with them less. Mad MIke

Quote......... De-zincification - poor quality bronze/brass (can't remember which) will have it's zinc atoms corroded out of it and become weak. Lots of misconseptions about brass/bronze and it could be summed up by mis quoting a saying and changing it to "All that glitters is not bronze" Brass...... Copper and zinc ......... Never ever to be used on sea going boats Bronze ....Arsenous Copper, lead, and zinc ...... Pre S/S screws and cheap fittings. Naval Bronze.... The pukka stuff! Arsenous Copper, tin, Zinc, Antimony and other addatives depending on area of use. All of these are frequently called brass Mad Mike
