Anodes guard against electrolysis which is an electrical action as the name sugests.
Rust on the other hand is a chemical reaction caused by the chemical elements in a metal reacting with oxygen in water and turning into an oxide (rust = hydrated iron oxide)
Metals are divided into catogories of 'Nobility' the weakest on the scale being the one that will be affected by electrolosis the first when it is placed in a circuit with another more noble metal. The process is electrochemical: the metal enters solution in the form of ions, atoms that have lost one or more electrons. The electrons flow through the metal and are discharged into the surrounding water.
So to make it simpler for me to explain. The leakage of electrical current, static or generated from a boat equipment that in any way has an electrical path to the water (engine prop shaft fuel tank if connected through copper or metal piping etc), will try to earth its self into the surrounding water. Electricity is a flow of electrons along a conductor as the flow of electrons travels through any metal condutor it takes with it stray atoms starting with the atoms of the least noble metal. Taking this as inevitable if one supplies a piece of metal that is very very low on the scale of nobility, it will be this metal that loses (sacrifices) it's atoms first, thus saving loss of atoms from more noble metals.
In application this means that every metalic item that is in the boat should be earthed to a common earth which in turn is connecter to the sacrificial anode and a return wire from the anode back to battery positive thus completeing the circuit. By doing this tha only loss of atoms will be from the very low nobility of the zinc content of the anode.
Items that are not in electrical contact with the water will not be affected by electrolosis as they do not have a way of earthing out to the water.

The best chance would be the old powerstation site. You could incorporate a slipway in with whatever they eventually decide to do there. There's plenty of space for parking etc and the depth of water would be ideal for a decent angle for a slipway. The only problem would be the cost ; they're bound to rip you off there I would think.
My prime choise too, a perfect spot. Other sites are Hamworthy and the existing slip at Evening Hill.

Let he who without sin cast the first stone Tom
Any chance of seing the Beebs video?
My best was trying to lift the dog over the gunnels. The dog stayed in the water and I joined the dog. Meanwhile the Romany gently chugged on with my then wife and two kids in it trying not to laugh. The dog thought it was hilarious too.

A remark made to me whist I was fitting a new shiny anode to my Romany when I had it at Cobbs.....
Onlooker "You want to give that a good coat of paint mate"
Me "Really?"
Onlooker " Yes mate, if you don't it'll just sorta melt away, it's the sea water mate, the salt rots it"
Pregnant silence
Me "Oh, right oh, thanks for the tip"
Onlooker walks off
John (inside boat in the bilge tightening up on throughbolt) "Kin idiot!"
You can not make this sort of stuff up!
By the way has any one else got any real anecdotes. I am sure Tom and Charlie must have.

Adam admits to his peccadillos.... (not like some of the others who seem to use music from blue videos!
As like most of the pure at heart and naicely brought up gentlefolk on this forum I have never heard let alone seen a blue video. Perhaps you can arrange a showing of one at the next meeting so we may all appreciate the musical content vis-a-vis the same in instructional fishing programs.

The easiest and most effective way of bringing you all up to date is for me to copy the correspondence ........
It would appear that we need to show that there are areas of the harbour shore that the council can use for this project. I can think of a couple straight off but I think we need input from other members particularly those who live in Poole and also those with any sort of experiance in talking to public authorities etc.
Mad Mike................
Dear Mr Harvey
Thank you for your email,
No easy I answer I'm afraid, as I'm not aware what land could be used for this, but I will copy your comments to colleagues to see if there is anything they can suggest.

Subject: Re Small boat slip way at Poole
Dear Mr Smith, your name was given to me as possibly the best person to contact.
I am writing on behalf of my fishing club (Poole Bay Small Boat Angling Club) and the many hundreds or may be thousands of trailer boat users of Poole harbour.
I would like to draw your attention to the lack of amenities at Poole for trailer boat users. I know about the slip at Baiter but it is woefully inadequate for modern boats. An ideal slip would be one useable at all states of tide, and one that slopes fairly steeply so that unhitching the trailer and pushing it and the boat another 40 or 50 feet into deeper water is not required. Baiter is ideal for PWC's and small sailing dinghies. These are light and usually used by the young and strong. Larger boats (18ft or there about)used by families and fishermen need a much better slip with more thought given to its design and position in the harbour. Considering all the proposed development on the harbour shores, I and those that I write on behalf of would like serious consideration given by Poole Council to the creation of a fully useable slip together with the necessary parking facilities for cars and trailers somewhere in addition to Baiter.
Southampton and Hythe have several council owned slips of the type needed. So too do Lymington and Christchurch. Only at Poole, the centre of small boat activity in the south, that there is only one very poorly designed and placed slipway.
Please guide us as to the best possible way of convincing you and the full council of what we need, and of course a way of getting it.
Yours faithfully
Mike Harvey

If you watch TV fishing programmes at all:
1) Which one is your favourite and why?
2) Which one do you like the least and why?
3) Is there a presenter who you enjoy watching and why?
4) Is there one you just can't abide and why?
....just interested
Tom
1) Which one is your favourite and why?
Fishing on the edge. Down to earth and the young guy who does it is natural and unpretentious.
2) Which one do you like the least and why?
The rest, full of self satisfied, pretentious prats in fishing environments none of us could hope to equal with every gadget given free by manufacturers, or their own brand crap they want to make more money out of by foisting it on us.
3) Is there a presenter who you enjoy watching and why?
The lad I mentioned in the first answer, but I am damned if I can think of his name.
4) Is there one you just can't abide and why?
See answer #2

Personaly I think with the low cost of home pressure washers and the speed at which they work a blast off of my trailer outfit is quick and easy and dead cheap too. Mind you the wife says I'll have to start paying her to do it this year.

Wrong link Paul - that was the 2004 photo shoot.
Certainly not an Spielberg production is it! The sea, the sky the sea, the sky, oh a bit of boat, the sea the sky

Jack, it may be worth mentioning that you're not going to wipe out their fish stocks going on past performance.

Is there a substitute for antifouling? Besides keep the boat on a trailer! Its getting close to that time of year again........
Anyone tried this stuff? http://www.miamiboat.co.uk/products.asp#Below
Personaly I would have the greatest suspicion of this Miami stuff. If it is 'completely non-toxic then the only way it can work is to create a none stick 'Teflon' like surface that marine growth can not adhere to. The growth is still ther and stays as a slime on the hull and the principal is that as you get under way the slime is washed off by your speed through the water. These sort of mixtures come on the every year or so under a different manufacturer. As far as I know none have lived up to the claims made and at

They're only putting sand from the Swash onto the beaches. It's very clean.
Yeah, you get the nice stuff from the swash.
Over Christmas they did the beach outside my place at Banksome...
...That one had all the crap from the harbour
I lost some rig in Poole harbour once, don't supposed you find it among the cr*p?
Oh! What did your lead look like? I found one in a sorta grey colour?

Guys, as a self confessed hi-tech phobic I am struggling with a Garmin 76 hand held.
It has so many features and buttons that change their function dependant on the number of times you press them I get frustrated and lost within it's programs.
So....... Is there a really simple idiot proof gps (fixed) with a chart reading (if that's what I mean? ie a picture of a chart and a dot showing where I am) feature.
I am worried that the sort of thing that does everything will be beyond my ability to remember what bl00dy button to push
The kids got me a mobile phone for Christmas marketed under the banner ... A mobile so simple even your dad can use it!
Is there a GPS in the same category?

Finally remembered the name of the councillor who raised the subject about uprating the slip facilities in Poole. Councillor Don collier.
The subject came up during discussions about proposed improvements to Baiter / Whitecliff park. He seemed to favour better slip facilities. Might be worth somebody representing PBSBAC to have an informal with him to see what he has in mind before any petitions go flying about.
He may have some sensible suggestions about how we should move forward on this subject. His email address should be on the Poole Council web site.
Rich.
Worth following up. I could spare some time but I don't live in Poole and I feel that that could be used as an excuse for a fob off. However I am happy to lend a poole resident any support I can.
Martin, any ideas???

All to do with the dredging of Poole Harbour and the beach replenishment scheme. They mix sand with water and pump it onto the beach through hte long pipe
Martin
Just think of it as Poole Harbour having an enema

Anyone know the torque setting for a Mariner/Mercury 60hp prop nut?
Coddy
Not very tight!
If you have not found the manufacturers setting then try this general rule.
Up tight but don't go mad, then back off half a turn.

Generally, I hate the warnings that get sent around but I have to admit that this one is important.
Please protect everyone you know by sending this to your entire email list.
If someone comes to your front door and says they are conducting a survey and asks you to show them your bum, do NOT show them your bum.
This is a scam. They only want to see your bum.
I wish I'd got this yesterday, I feel so stupid and cheap.

I wrap them in cling film, and then into the plastic boxes that take aways are now sold in, each box takes about 8 - 10 crabs, and store them for the season.
Frozen or liquid?

Thanks to Charlie for organising ........ and to Brian for running the course that Gordon, Trevor and myself found useful and valuable ... in improving our communication whilst afloat.
I'm sure a few more members would also benefit............
..... just have to get myself a Radio now ! ........
....handheld or fixed ?????????? ...... wasn't that a previous thread ??
Or in my case, can you sensibly put a fixed radio in an open boat ?? [ where does the aeriel / antenna go ?].
Alun.
Alun, I have seen some realy natty open boat instalations with the transiever under a thwart and the aerial on a little demountable ali/st steel A frame at the front. The A frame used rowlock holes to slot into and was removed and laid in the boat with the aerial folded back when trailed home.

New Slip Way At Poole
in In The News
Posted
I used to years ago when I had permission from the then general manager of westovers to use their car park at week ends. The problem there is the bloody minded attitude of so called professional skippers who use there as a dinghy park. Any one outside their exclusive little group was not welcome and many cars and trailers left there at weekends were damaged or totaly boxed in by their vehicles.
