Wedger
I've just fitted a new arial to Otter but on making a half mile radio check there was now't either way. It did however, work perfectly fine in the yard much good that is.......... What are the likely causes? I personally suspect a dry joint on the new arial connection to the back of the set. Or could it be more sinister within the set itself?
Maverick Martin
Inner and outer of the co-ax cable touching? apart from that I am clueless. I guess you had problems before or you wouldn't be fitting new? Martin
Wedger
I replaced the arial because the tip had been broken off and stuffed with silicone before I had her. I suspected water ingress so changed it completely with new cable and union as supplied. Radio seems to function well but the signal is very weak both in and out. I'll double check the union. Brian
As you say, it's most likely the connection. If that doesn't cure it, I've got a VHF VSWR meter to test it if you want.
plaicemat
I would say, almost certainly, a dodgy connection. I had a similar problem and re-attached the two ends properly with solder and that fixed it. Terry.
Wedger
Thankyou chaps! I'll do the solder thing first and check again.

Brian, I've soldered the connector but perhaps best to test it with the meter anyway. What do you suggest? Is it something I can borrow and do myself?? Brian
Trev Where are you? More to the point, Where's your boat, I'm available most of the time (retired). But I haven't got any transport this week. My daughter and son-in-law have borrowed my vehicle for their holiday in Devon, as their car came home from Honiton on the back of an AA transporter today.
