alun j.
I caught this little fish whilst feathering for bait ........ at first I thought it was a smelt and popped in the bucket. ... in case I was desperate [ it was very small !!] Watching it swim about I began to doubt it was a smelt.... it had a rounded snout and when gulping, it clearly had a mouth that started a bit back from the nose and a very , VERY big gape !! Anyone know what this is ?? I studied Biology and have only seen things like this trawled upfrom very deep water !! I have never seen anything like this inshore. Caught over Christchurch Ledge in about 5 m of water.... the red marks are not spots; it's where it got hooked on one of the other small feathers....it was just silvery. alun j.
That's it !! Well done Rob ..... 'Silverfish' ......... how appropriate . Anchovy ....... bet no one else has one of those on their species tally ?? Alun.
Mike Fox
I'd agree anchovy Alun. I'd also go as far to say as they're relatively common in our waters! I've had sprats from the boats on Poole Quay a number of times that have anchovies mixed in with them...I guess they're similar sized and if the shoals merge, how can they separate? They're great eating, better than sprats, and not at all salty - that's how anchovies are normally preserved. Great catch !!!! Mike
Rob
Alun, You forgot to describe the fighting characteristics? Long steaming runs or did it go deep?
codpiece
Alun, your ''catch'' appears to be ''skin finished'' I thought Anchovy had scales..and is the tail large enough? Derek. Edited October 5, 2010 by codpiece
