48hr Comp - Alderney & Cherbourg

Time to start looking at plans for the 48hr Comp?

Whilst chatting in Alderney this weekend, I had several comments that doing another Alderney trip in June and then Cherbourg in July wasnt going to be possible for many boats - busy diarys, cost of trip, crew availability etc...

So, I'm looking at combining the two trips over the weekend of the 48hr comp. My rough plan would be to cross to Alderney on Friday, fish eother mid channel or around the island on Firday, overnight in Braye, Sat fish around the island / banks, then head over to Cherbourg onb Sat afternoon, overnight in Cherbourg with a meal in town and then head out Sun morning to fish the eastern wrecks on the return leg?

Anyone up for this?

Hi Guys

I may be speaking out of turn as I am just crew on Gregs boat, but I don't think that Cherbourg has any appeal for "Team Mrs Sea".

Everyone knows that I love my wrecking, but Team Mrs Sea is first and foremost interested in the flatties and then possibly a little bit of medium sized toothy things with lumps of rusty metal last.

Our plan is to head to Alderney on 9th June and return home on 12th June fishing those Eastern wrecks and mid channel banks on the way back. I don't think the team are interested in anymore wrecks than those we find on Sunday.

We'd love to buddy up with anyone planning the same as us and may even stumble across the Cherbourg teams on the way home.

Cherbourg has the advantage of being tied up to 'dry land' and easy access to 24hr fuel etc

I'm not a huge fan of trying to fit a lot into a short trip - you end up with a detailed planning that will inevitably fall foul of something! (possible example would be finding yourself the wrong end of the Alderney Race at the wrong time based on your initial outline - Schole to Cherbourg can be 1 hour or it can be 8 - with you wishing you had taken the long way round via Swinge, or Ortac, then headed 8 miles off in a wide arc).

btw - how was the water taxi over in Braye? Was it good enough (all round) to leave tenders behind or worth the hassle of taking one?

I thought you found flattie fishing boring - as youve told us several times! tongue.gif

biggrin.gif I do, but this is a team effort and my team want to target flatties.

I am along as galley slave, cabin boy, anchor monkey and occasional fisher and so I will work with the majority view aboard our fabulous vessel.

Not sure how far east you plan to go, but two hours is a lot more than we will be going on our way home. I was thinking more along the lines of a wreck with the name of a country in it, another that talks of channel islands beaches and then heading off to the eastern end of a certain set of mid channel banks...

Craig,

Don't speak too soon - first you will (should) need one to get out of Bristol and then you will need a visa to get your boat out of Cobbs and under the new bridge.

Adam

After researching the wrecks ready for the July trip, then having it changed to a holiday trip by the boss [Wendy] I had thought of going to cherbourg to fish the wrecks each way for the 48 hr comp.

I have provisionaly spoken to lads about crewing, but not yet looked at the tide books or taken time off,

Tides look good mate - slightly smaller than we had this weekend, with HW in Braye on Fri of 1430 - so good for re-fuelling.

The trip shouldnt need that much more planning that the usual 3 day 2nd Alderney trip we have done the past 3 years - instead of going to Braye on the 2nd eve we go East. The plan certianly suits fishing Speedy in the afternoon and then catching the tide East.

In not going in a F4/5 this time though! tongue.gif

I have booked the time off this afternoon biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

And also had a look at the tides that seem as you say a tad smaller than last weekend. biggrin.gif

I will have to firm up on the crew

I too will not go twice in one summer on that forecast

are we thinking the same?

early start Fri, stop only for bait, then to schole via races [tide changes at noon]

up for fuel

speedy time is about 1645 [comp start time]

Sat

after breakfast East to wrecks/reefs en route tide would be against.

but if we leave early we get a push past C de le Hague

Slack is 0730

If you fish banks for the morning Sat the tide goes back in our favour to head west at 1330 Sat, [could fish en route]

Sun

Slack off Cherbourg about 0830

I would like to anchor a lump at slack that is about 20 miles out on the way home then go drifting

It all looks like hard fishing and some early starts

only possible on a good forecast

Craig love the french mate biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

For Members like me

In google translate they read

"Poole is my world, so no need now for a passport, if the time arises when I want to go further a field, can I apply for a passport, but thank you Adam"

"Neil Bristol people should not need a passport to visit any country in our place and for the bridge, it depends on your side of town, our should I say the head of planning."

"Craig just get a passport and stop being stupid you will need to follow your buddy boat Wight Magic everywhere in France!"

"Craig, As a Boy Scout, always be prepared"

As I saw the fuel requirements for a similar sized petrol boat I think I will pass on taking my boat over there.

If anyone is looking for crew to share the workload, costs and the experience with I would love to join you.

I am not really a drinker, but would be happy to join in the nights out (although I would probably sit on one or two pints all evening) I also dont have the fishing experience of most but I am looking to learn and I do make a pretty good cup of tea!

Keep me in mind will ya. (Stoke wont be getting into any more cup finals that week so there should be no distractions)

Graham.
