biggcol
We went to check on Boblin this evening after the blow we have been having. We rowed out to her and one of the motors was down. It was up on Sunday when we last saw her. Am I right in thinking this will be an Hydraulic leak or could anything else cause this to happen. The batteries were isolated. Any ideas where I should start looking? Cheers Colin
Sinbad
Hi Col, This has happened to me once as well - but I put it down to a senior moment. I dont think I tilted the engine fully until it comes to rest, and the weight bearing on the piston overcame the hydraulics whilst the pump was off. Hope it isnt serious. Mine stays put even with a small weep from the piston. I was tempted to say mine keeps up for weeks on end - but I thought Jim would be reading this!!!! Rob
Col, On my yam there is a big screw that allows the hydraulic system to be bypassed and manually lifted or lowered. If it is at all loose the engine will lower. Maybe your has worked loose? You don't want it to be seals! Does the tilt unit make the right sounds (motor spinning) if you try lift / lower it on the button? Rob
biggcol
Rob It lifted back up on the button no prob. I lowered and raised it a couple of times . I will be able to get down tomorrow lunch time and check if it stays up tonight. I will have to have a look and see if there is a big screw anywhere( go on Jim you know you want to) Colin

Sea Legs
I was always taught not to rely on the hydraulic ram to support the engine, but to use the manual support, and then lower outboard (hydraulically) to reduce strain on hydraulic system - or don't modern outboards have this simple facility? Rob
I do that too, lower on to manual rest when trailing. But, should you read the Yamaha manual, you should trail with leg down! Meaning I would need a trailer 1ft hight than current one! Madness!! But I shoudl also remove the prop when running on muffs in case I chop my leg off!!! Newboy
Not trying to add fuel to the fire, but the important question is Can you get it up again?
biggcol
Thanks all I got down today and the motor is still fully up. I have more time tomorrow so if the wind is not too bad I will check out the manual relief screw(go on Jim) and check for any visible leaks. alun j.
Another possible explanation............ outside interference ?? !! Is it like mine , with an Up \ Down rocker switch on the side of the engine? Could someone have come alongside and pressed the switch ??
biggcol
I did think that too Alun but the batteries were isolated and the rocker switch doesn't work when they are switched off. I tried it just to be sure though. Colin
Rob
Colin, Just make sure somene hadn't lowered it prior to "removal"!!!! I assume they have locks on the securing bolts. Rob
biggcol
Rob we have very expensive locks on but that wont stop anyone if they really want them. It was my first thought that someone might be after the motor when I saw it down. Will be looking again tomorrow. Colin
biggcol
Well have been monitoring the motor all week. It has stayed up so I am none the wiser. I have taken on board about the manual lock and as of yesterday they are now on the locks. Just hope I remember to unlock them before I try to lower them down. Graham Nash
Colin, Just make sure somene hadn't lowered it prior to "removal"!!!! I assume they have locks on the securing bolts. Rob This could be a possibility but most unlikely. I cannot imagine anyone switching the isolator switch to on, lowering the engine ready for removal then re-isolating the switch when they realised they didnt have time to complete their task (or once they saw the locks). Surely they would have left the isolator switch in the on position?
biggcol
My isolators have removable switches. So I doubt if anyone had been at them. I shall just have to keep an eye on it. Colin

Time will tell, and if you see boblin driving I'm circles you will know why!!!! Sorry Col & Bobi!
Jsplace
Both Engines looked to be up when we came back in yesterday evening. Will be down there again on Thurs (weather permitting) and will have a quick check on the way past if you would like?
