mrw Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 Hi, thinking of putting our 18ft boat on a swinging mooring at Parkstone Bay Marina, just wondered if anyone had used them ? Will be our first swinging mooring as fed up with the slipway fun :-) Looking for any advise or things we should look for with this type of mooring ? Thanks MrW Quote
Maverick Martin Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 Swinging moorings probably the cheapest way to keep your boat on the water but comes with risks ie I am glad my boat wasn't on swinging mooring today! Another downside is security but then we all leave our boats in exposed places so no more risk there than anywhere else. A dingy maybe needed to get to your boat unless your mooring provider has dinghies for use by customers. If you have to supply your own dingy then that needs to be kept somewhere. Parkstone Bay is a well run yard and I am sure you will be fine there. I would think their moorings are likely to be well maintained however I have no experience with them, do ask questions on that point indeed if you consider anywhere else ask the same questions. Parkstone bay run water taxis for mooring holders but not sure of timings or if this is seasonal again ask the questions One of our members works there he may well be along in a mo to give you the low down Martin Quote

DommyBoy Posted January 4, 2012 Report Posted January 4, 2012 Another thing to consider if you are to moor your boat there is the insurance element, many insurance companies will exclude cover in Parkstone Bay or North Haven etc between 01/11 - 31/03 annually due to its exposure to weather. If you are unaware then check your policies guys as these are very common exclusions for the area. If not excluded then there could well be a condition that between those dates your boat will need to be kept on a pontoon mooring..... ....DONT WORRY GUYS WHO HAVE YOUR BOAT INSURED WITH ME, Those of you who insure your boat with me are fine, I make sure that I choose the correct insurers for individual needs so you are adequately covered and the mooring period exclusion is not in the policy! Thanks Dom Quote

Unfortunately, i'm sure that there will be some guys with inadequate cover here, especially the guys who insure directly with the insurers rather than a broker with knowledge of the area. If anyone needs to discuss cover, feel free to ask me and i'll confirm for you. Thanks Dom Fowler Penfold Marine Insurance Brokers 01202 854557 Quote
Adam F Posted January 4, 2012 Report Posted January 4, 2012 Hello Mr W, I have had a boat (23') at Parkstone Bay for the last 3 years. The first 2 years I had a swinging mooring as you suggest - worked very well for me. Access it pretty much at most state of tide as you dont need to enter the shallower marina, altough LW Springs can be a bit tight. They offer a free Taxi servicen which is a HUGE boon and saves rowing out - however tenders are Free and available if you wish to access your boat outside of office hours. The marina has a fuel berth - very helpful for me. Security is good, although you are obviously a little more exposed on a swinging mooring. Bear in mind the swinging moorings are only available during the summer - all boats come out onto drystack (or take it home) from Oct onwards. Last year I opted for the more expensive trailer and forklift mooring - it was about 30% more expensive but I dont have to worry about antifouling, less maintenance, better security, 24 hour, 365 day acess and free water, wash down and shore power facilities. Hope this helps? Adam Quote
TomBettle Posted January 4, 2012 Report Posted January 4, 2012 I work at PBM and can agree with Adam and Martin. The marina has come on in leaps and bounds since it was a grubby old boat yard some 8 years ago or so. The moorings are fully maintained each season, but the season is 1st April to end of September (usually some grace throug October) and then the boat has to go somewhere... This is not unusual for many marinas and personally I would not want any boat out on a swinging mooring through our recent winter storms... insured or not! Your boat will get trashed in no time. The water taxi is free of charge and in season runs from about 07:30 to about 21:00 with the exceptions being the very lowest of spring tides when the taxi can't ge across the flats. Rowing boats (small) are available at all states of the tide... simply help yourself and drop it back when you return. We do have fuel on site. It is not the cheapest in the harbour, but by no means anywhere near the dearest and the convenience factor of not heading halfway up the harbour or the worry of the quality from elsewhere make it a real boon. Great staff , great onsite cafe go to making it a really pleasant place to keep a boat. Over the coming months / year there will be changes to the offices and also new toilet and shower facilities going in. The existing ones are fine, but the new ones will be more in keeping with the upgrades around the rest of the marina. Parkstone Bay itself is quite exposed from a strong SW storm, but we don't get much of this through the season and as I said, you'd have to be bonkers to keep a boat out on a swinging mooring through the winter anyway... The bay isn't deep, but not many places in the harbour are. My own boat is on a shaft and draws close to 3'. I haven't ever touched bottom in the bay simply by having a quick glance at a tide table and avoiding dead low water. It is no hassle. If you are on a leg or an outboard you will find it even less of an issue. Get your name down fairly quick though as the renewals are filling up quite quickly. Quote

mrw Posted January 4, 2012 Author Report Posted January 4, 2012 Thanks for the very informative replies everyone, think i will give it a go. Dispatched wife with form and deposit DommyBoy made a very valid point about insurance, still trying to get through to mine (was done on line) Will defo use local broker when the time comes. Its all a learning curve this boating lark Thanks MrW Quote
pirky Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 I can echo posts by Adam and Tom ... I kept my 16.5 ft micro-plus there for 2 years April through to end of October and was really pleased with service and facility ...... Insurance wise I asked for an extension to the end of October and it was agreed FOC. The marina was happy as long as boat was insured..... They do charge for lifting in at the start of the season and out at the end... and were not prepared to allow me to use their slipway .... so I used Baiter slipway when I wanted the boat in or out.. plaicemat Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 Can I also suggest that the joining fee for PBSBAC would be another good investment whilst you are writing a cheque for your mooring. You will not regret it. Terry. Quote

cth Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 North Haven Yacht Club has memberships and mooring availble, you will find there rates are some of the best in Poole, PBSBAC already have members within the club, you get 24hr use of the club house, dingys,Taxi which is run during the season, day watch, night watch, some shelter from the southwest winds, half the club is fisherman, half yachtsman hope this helps. contact the club for further details. biggcol Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 We are at North Haven and really pleased to be there. 24hr use of the club house which has a well equipped kitchen, showers, underfloor heating and free water. We are insured 12 months no prob. As Chris said there is a taxi during the season and dingies all year. It's very friendly and there are a lot of experienced boaters always on hand for help or advice. Also it is CHEAP !!! I don't think you will find cheaper anywhere in this area. If anyone is interested get on with it because the vacant moorings will fill up very quickly. Colin Quote
