DaleJ Posted July 17 Report Posted July 17 Afternoon all, I'm planning to head out tomorrow evening after work in the search for a Tope or 2, I have a friend coming that wants to catch one. Only ever caught small ones myself and a couple better fish on charters a few years ago. Couple of questions, Is it best to fish at Anchor? Are live baits preferred or would a nice mackerel flapper work just as well? and now the cheeky one, Anyone care to share a mark or 2 where we might find some success? Thanks in advance Dale Jim 1 Quote
jerry.shutter Posted July 17 Report Posted July 17 Dale there are so many out there at the moment it seems, find a deep hole preferably, fresh Macks increase your chances hugely, drift or anchor, big circle hooks, i tend to flapper as you get a better scent trail, i hope to get out early doors tomorow and avoid Tope!!! Give me a shout and if we have been plaugued with them i will happily tell you where we were. Hope you have fun. DaleJ and Jim 2 Quote
DaleJ Posted July 17 Author Report Posted July 17 Thanks Jerry, Were planning to head out after work and stay out into dark in the hope of finding some before the wind gathers any momentum. I'll have a look for some holes!! Quote
Rob Posted July 17 Report Posted July 17 Hmmmm, inshore deep holes........ nor sure where you'd go mate.Maybe Swanage Spoils? Not sure you'd want to be further out in to dark.Maybe Slates or 50/50..... thoughts from other members?R Greg and DaleJ 2 Quote
Kingfisher 126 Posted July 18 Report Posted July 18 You’re getting the smoothounds mixed up with tope Jim, all about the teeth, had some huge ones yesterday running off on light gear. Jim and Greg 2 Quote
Greg Posted July 18 Report Posted July 18 This time of year, definitely on the Swanage Spoils. Tope come on the feed as the tide slows including slack but go off the feed when the tide starts running again. You need to time it right. Also, as well as frozen mackerel Tope will take Whole squid. I have caught a lot of Tope on Squid. As a tip. If you anchor up, plot your position with Swanage NCI on channel 65. You are within their view distance on the Spoils and they will confirm that they can see you. This is added safety if you anchor alone as I do on the Spoil quite often. Also I would recommend fishing on low tides as not to put too much strain on you anchor and if you need to leave it would be easier to up the anchor. But remember to tell NCI when you leave.Good luck GregSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk DaleJ, Jim, Rob and 1 other 4 Quote
