BigMac
After Steve Porters shark and hearing that a mate of ours had a porgy swimming round his boat, on thursday, taking bream off anglers hooks, we thought today might be the day for our first shark trip of the season, but that horrible southerly wind put paid to any notion we had of getting to our preferred mark. We would have to inflict ourselves on some more bass instead We left the mooring at 4.30, myself ,Rupe and Billy, and with livebait catching done in a trice,we were set for our first drift by 5.10. The southerly wind against tide was making the overfall stand up and we nearly took one over the side on that first drift. We would wait for it to ease and come back in an hour or so. We steamed east for a few miles and settled into a nice inshore drift. In contrast to our first mark, here there was hardly tide and the wind was blowing us diagonally uptide We stuck it out for an hour but caught nothing! Back on the original mark the tide had eased a bit and it was fishable. The fish started to come slowly but surely, nothing huge, just fish between 3 and 5lb. The mackerel ran out and we motored off to replenish stocks. They kept coming sporadically, then Rupe hooked a better one that really bent his rod,at 8 3/4lb she was like a minted coin. An hour and a half later and about 400 yards further west we started to find a better stamp of fish. Most were now in the 5 to 6lb range with the odd 7 or 8 thrown in. Rupe hooks a good un' that gives him a good eorkout for 5 minutes and then the hook pulls Very next drift he hooks another that he get to the net and she goes 10-04!! Half an hour later, even further to th west, I hook one that takes 50 or 60 yards in its first run snd then snaps my hooklink. B*gger!! We then go 5 drifts, hooking a good fish every drift, landing 4 out of the 5 hooked. One of the bass about 7lb that I caught had a severly deformed belly (wish I'd photographed it now) It was'nt an illness cause beneath its skin you could cleary make out the shape of at least 4 large crabs, Full to the gills and shes still is willing to take a whole live mackerel. Rupes playing a fish carefully and I realise it must be a good one cause hes quiet and concentrating, as it gets to he side of the boat she gives us a defiant display of head shaking and tailwalking till she is in the net. On the scales shes 12lb exactly Aother brace of doubles in a day for Rupe, Well done mate!! The wind starts to swing to the east a bit more, bringing with it the first few drops of rain, and we decide to call it a day at 1.00pm. I have returned 6, Rupe returned 5 and Billy retuned 2. With the 9 Fish we have in the coolboox between us, that gives us a total of 22 bass for the morning including Rupes 2 doubles!!! Brilliant Al Rupe with 12-
Wedger
Magic moments chaps............thanks for sharing them. It seems now that the bass are really starting to feed hard after spawning. (I had one a while back that coughed up a whole sea urchin, that hardly came up, even without the spines). The next three sets of springs should be glorious . Please keep sampling the scales and in particular include some of these larger fish as data on these year classes remains thin to say the least, your data will be invaluable. Nice one Al, Rupe & Billy Wedge
Adam F
Well done chaps - its becoming a habit!! You must have the 'knack' as my last 2 trips over to the mark have produced just 1 fish - despite fishing all methods and both tides..... A cracking days fishing - I stayed in thinking the wind was too much, should have known better! Adam

Swainiac
Another desperately great days angling from the dream team. Another brace of double to boot, well done Rup, stick in there, take that club record I sense a healthy spirit of sportsmanship between you two guys, and am dead chuffed that catches like this are shared on the club website. Thanks. I'd echo T's words re the Bass sampling, I think this is a very important survey, that can have a direct affect on the minimum landing sizes of ALL future bass taken commercially, as the findings of this survey go from us here at the PBSBAC, to CEFAS, whos scientists are reporting directly to the Minister in charge of our fisheries policies, please please please assist Trev and I in our efforts here. Thanks, and well done on another great days angling, spot on. Rich

Manic Moore
Not a good day on Enticer. I took out an old friend and customer. I decided to go from Lymington and try fot the smoothies but as the weather seemed reasonable headed for the bass although that horrible short chop that rattles your boat to the core. We got to the island just as the tide started to flood although the wind was certainly pushing us accross at a rate of knots. We could not buy a bite We stuck at it for a good couple of hours or so and my mate had a take on a free line offering but got away. We decided to spend the last couple of hours of the tide anchored up for the smoothies in the Solent but unfortunately the weed was on the hook far quicker than the fish. We squeeked a bream each then the wind really got up and was howling down the Solent at probably 4 to 5 and a few hundred sail boats heading our way saw us limp back to the harbour at about 8 knots. I think I need a proper bass lesson from the masters on Aquafresh Anyway, still enjoyed the day out mastering my new ship
Paul D
Went out on the Friday evening, despite JimBob saying it was "a bit snotty" out there ... Took a friend from football out and when we reached the ledge it was roughing up nicely. Tried usual drift for mackeral, but my friend was already feeling ill. Marineboy then turned up and headed west to meet up with Fugazi who had found mackeral. Steamed over to meet up and managed to catch a few strings of joeys. also had a monster garfish as well. Had a go drifting near Hengsibury Head and lost a fish as I was helping my friend tackle up. The drift was from west to east which was pretty clever given the tide was ebbing. After slack water and the start of the flood we tried some drifts on the ledge. Hooked into a fish briefly and lost it. Switched tactics to use the float rig and almost immediately caught a bass off around 2 1/2 lb ( returned ). Stayed out until the fireworks started and then returned. Hard fishing but my first bass from the ledge this year.
