Adam F Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 I have just read that it has now been announced that Red Diesel for pleasure use in boats will be subject to the full 60p of tax from Nov 1st? Is this true? If so I'll have to think carefully before the new purchase! That will make it, what - Quote
Mike Fox Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 You could always consider upgrading to environmentally friendly propulsion Adam Mike Quote

jack Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 I have in the past whilst weaving about in the wind at the end of the anchor rope, thought about fitting a small Mizzen sail to Pal-a-mine. But am now considering more....Is such a thing a practicality jack Quote
plaicemat Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 What about veg oil or bio fuel in marine diesels. I know it's a pain in the backside carrying fuel to the boat but if the savings are there, perhaps it is an option. Terry. Quote
great white Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 Just received this at work Looks like its time to fit a diesel heater Charlie Wednesday 5th March 2008 RED DIESEL UPDATE Last week, Government made an announcement regarding the outcomes of the consultation on Red Diesel. Key features of the new scheme for charging duty on marine diesel to be introduced by Her Majesty Quote
great white Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 Adam It looks like you need to consider getting a boat with effiecient propulsion and "Inefficient heater" Charlie Quote
Mike Fox Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 (edited) For anyone considering heating: Cost of diesel heater, assuming single outlet = Edited March 6, 2008 by Mike Fox Quote
AHoy Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 This has got me considering diesel for cooking as well as heating though. No gas bottle and system plus "considerably" more diesel consumed for domestic use Quote
djredrupp Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 anyone fancy buying a 110hp nanni diesel 'heater'? very inefficent at providing heat, and has a strange spinning which is attached to a three bladed thing... but is DEFINATELY not an engine... This is just another chance of the government to generate more money, by penalising the individual, rather than the large tax dodging coorporations, with a Jersey bank account! Dan Quote

Fugazi Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 I wonder how much longer before private watercraft users have to pay for an annual boat licence? Gordon H Quote
Brian Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 (edited) Fit big heat exchanger to engine, plumb it to radiators around cabin. Claim that only efficient way to heat radiators is to run engine as it also drives the circlating pump, the fact that it moves the boat is an unexpected side effect. bliss2 Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 Today at corrls 70p a litre not to long and we will be paying over the Quote
shytalk Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 rip off poole as well 53p off the tanker in weymouth last week. i can see with commercial operators still getting duty free diesel there will be a few more part time charter boats about !!!!! Quote
Mike Fox Posted March 8, 2008 Report Posted March 8, 2008 Wonder if the "fishing guide" concept stretches to being a commercial activity? Or Level 2 Powerboat instructor? Might avoid the need for big boat, MCA registration etc. Mike Quote
jack Posted March 8, 2008 Report Posted March 8, 2008 We on Pal-o-mine have an ebespatcher diesl heater[always in use Oct-june].How on earth could we begin to calculate the proportion of our fiuel it consumes. I reckon it would be worth just paying for it,rather than the hastle of calculation headache. jack Quote
Swainiac Posted March 12, 2008 Report Posted March 12, 2008 Failing all this guys.....just make enquiries into buying registration for your small boat, and keep ure costs down that way surely? There are small commercial licences out there for purchase at very resonable rates. Quote
plaicemat Posted March 12, 2008 Report Posted March 12, 2008 I understand, Rich, that a licence for a Warrior size boat is about Quote
Les L. Posted March 12, 2008 Report Posted March 12, 2008 would be about 8k for your boat Terry, depends a lot on the engine size Les Quote
Adam F Posted March 12, 2008 Author Report Posted March 12, 2008 So the idea is to have a 200hp diesel onboard to run your heating system, and a 10hp diesel which you have your commercial liceance under on which to power the boat! Quote
Brian Posted March 12, 2008 Report Posted March 12, 2008 Taking round figures, if commercials pay 50p /litre and private is Quote
