Jim
Great day at the Boat Show again on Sunday. It was Lovely weather. But I suppose due to the financial climate, it was much quieter than usual. We said hello to Tom Bettle and co. They allowed us onto the boats for a good look around. They do a nice one for about
Duncan F (bathclaret)
Glad to hear you had a good day Jim. Did Warrior have either of their new boat designs on show, or was it still (just) the 150 / 165 / 175 ?? Many months ago I saw the wood mould prototypes and Phil said they were hoping to have them ready for the show, but I've heard nothing about them since. Jim
Yes! On the Honda Stand they had a new design Warrior on display. I can't remember the model name but it's got much smoother lines and more cubby holes etc. It's aimed more towards the wives than the 165. It is very nice and worth a look. Adam F
Many months ago I saw the wood mould prototypes and Phil said they were hoping to have them ready for the show, but I've heard nothing about them since. Every year, same question..... I was in the factory 5 years ago and aw the MDF plug for a 20' pilothouse, then 4 years ago I was up again and saw it in GRP, since then it's the same story - 'will be ready for the next show' I think it's more a case of they do so well with the 165 they dont need / want to do anything else - that's why they stopped the 195. mike02380
the warrior on the honda stand was the 170, same hull as the 165, the interior is different, more refined decking etc
Jim
The man on the stand said that the hull had been altered slightly too. My 165 tends to " Porpoise " on flat water and he claims they have designed that out of it. He also said I could use some Trim Tabs and a Wedge. I thought the wedge was to pay for them but he explained that it is used to alter the angle of the engine.
Adam F
Yep - smart tabs and a trim wedge have been pretty much standard fit on the 165 for a few years now. A few moan (usually non 165 owners!) about the slight porposing, but hey - it's a small minor defect on such an otherwise well designed boat - at normal operating speeds it's not an issue. 170? Not seend that before - I thought the more refined 165 was the 165 Pro Angler? Edit: Oooh! Just seen it http://www.warriorboats.co.uk/2008-boats-shows.html Looks like a 165 and 175 morphed - I guess hence the 170... strange how they have shoe horned it in between the three others? Maybe they will phase one out? Good to see they are constantly improving and developing.... Edited September 24, 2008 by Adam F
Seamouse
Looking at the website pictures, I'd guess the 170 is actually a Pro Angler hull. Same outer shape as the 165 but different construction completely. Interesting splashwell shape, looks like they've tried to claw back some extra deck space. plaicemat
Have I missed a toy? What is a wedge? Terry.
Jim
A friend of mine thinks it's a Large fold of Money ! The chap at the boat show says it's an insert on the engine mounting to alter the angle. Adam will explain in more detail I suppose. Adam, in your view do we need wedge and Trim Tabs, or just choose from one of the two ? Jim
TomBettle
The wedge being referred to is supplied by Warrior for their 165 as the transom isn't steep enough to allow the engine to trim in beneath the vertical (as a result the boat can potentially porpoise over about 22 knots). The wedge goes between the transom and the outboard and allows a greater degree of downward trim and helps prevent porpoising. The smart tabs drop the bow of the boat further still and should completely alleviate porpoising. Not an big issue, but something to be aware of is that their are times when you want to get the bow of the boat up. In these situations you are a bit scuppered with smart tabs. Adjustable tabs are considerably more expensive, but IMHO worth it to give moer versatile handling.
Duncan F (bathclaret)
Unless Paul & Phil's plans changed after I was up at the factory in April, the new boat has a completely new hull design - with a softer ride intended more for "family" use. They had also taken quite a lot of weight out of it compared to the 165/Pro Angler. It's hard to tell on the photos, but the new design also had no moulded clinkering. I also saw the "Warrior Arvor" in Leyland - maybe they'll eventually get this finished in a year or three, just in time for me thinking about upgrading the 175 Duncan
Jim
The new 170 is just " Nicer " than the 165. When the wives are helping to choose, this should help to sway them. Well done Warrior !

Adjustable tabs are considerably more expensive, but IMHO worth it to give moer versatile handling. After a bad experience with over-powerful trim tabs, I had the small 40lb ones fitted. They make a huge difference to the handling but they are also soft enough that I can trim the bows up in a following sea. Having run for home this spring in a tail wind gusting 7 (don't ask), I can say for sure that they don't enforce broaching. On the other hand, you do have to live with two tea-trays sticking out from the stern. I like the way a 165 with tabs handles but I have to say, this whole porpoising thing on various forums has started to get tiresome. The bare 165 hull handles perfectly well, is inherently safer with the slightly light bow and even on a dead flat day when you've got the hammer down, the porpoising is no big deal and minimised anyway by some intelligent weight distribution. What, me? Tetchy? Steve
