Coddy
As some may know I keep my boat on a mooring by the RNLI and as they had thier 2 day open at the week-end I had to get my boat out before 9am Saturday. I booked a couple of nights at the Dolphin Quay Marina. It was so nice just to stepp off the boat onto a pontoon. Anyway I was on my way back to the mooring on Monday AM when I noticed the oil pressure dropping and then the oil warning light came on! I instantly turned the engine off which then meant I had no power and very little steerage. I started to drift into shore and just missed 2 brand new Sun seekers ( ) and get onto one of the paths that the dingy users use to launch their tenders. Opened the engine cover and found oil everywhere, none on the dipstick of course but could not see where it had come from. I carry a little oil on board so tipped this into the engine and took a chance and started the engine, it soon became obvious where the oil was from, a small high pressure hose from the engine to the turbo bearings had split apart! Out came the auxillary and tried to start it. After a couple of hours trying all I could whilst on the boat I gave up. So secured the boat, took the auxillary home and left a note to say I had broken down and a contact number if needed. Back home I stripped the carb down, again, cleaned and re-set the points, cleaned the plug. Put it on my engine stand and pulled ................ away she went first time! It was now too late to go back down as the tide was ebbing and my mooring dries out. Tuesday I could not get down as I had an appointment to go to so had to leave it until today. Down at the boat at 9am fit the auxillary and it started first pull again, let it warm up and then headed for the mooring and found out that I need to get a bigger hp engine, I got there ok but s..l..o..w..l..y Managed to strip the pipe off and get a pipe and fixing made up at Pirtek so all I have to do is fit it and put it all back together. Boats who would have them? Any ideas what is the best way to soak up all the oil in the bilge? Dave
Maverick Martin
Bad luck Dave (again) Regards oil clean up, suck up as much as you can with a vacuum type hose and bottle. Use plenty of rags to remove what cant be got at with the vacuum. There are plenty of proprietary cleaner fluids Bilge Ex being one (very good btw). As an inboard boat owner you will soon become used to dirty bilges. I got that fed up with my boat I nicknamed her "the dirty bitch" as it seemed every time I cleaned her out she spat something else in there Martin
oysterboats
sorry to hear about your problem dave tried to get your attention on sunday but you were a bit pre occupied understandably if you have a look on ebay they often have some pads that sit in the bilge and soaks up the oil but leaves any water behind regards from graham
