    sunday boating

For the attention of Bob F, I really was't going to tell anyone about our most recent Disaster Day,But you did ask.Set out on a lovely morning, picked up Squid bait as we already had mackeral, sea conditions wonderful;weather unbelievable, mild and sunny.Virtually empty sea ,practicaly the only boat about.decided to go beyond Swanage and look for The wrecks,we had co-ordinates,and as told at the last meeting no-one,but no-one could fail to find the specific one we had in mind, you could even see its "BOIL" from the shore ! Well after searching a mirror flat sea in a screaming spring tide for more than an hour,we found Nothing, someone had obviouslyswitched off the boil, and shifted the wreck. Not to be deterred after our 17 mile ride we tried several other co-ordinates from a certain publication [which will will shortly get a neat hole bored in its top left corner, and be hung somewhere pending another type of emergency] without success,We decided to anchor, and fished for an hour or so,collecting 4 Doggies, and a pretty 3lb Spotted ray.{all returned.] .After carrying out our newly learned bouy assisted anchor recovery. We then moved back over the extremely impressive turbulant race on the ledge,to a patch of very rough ground near the mile marker posts.after a fruitless hour we decided to "up and move"The fun then began,a half hour later, still very firmly fixed to the bottom.with the foreward samson post in danger of being pulled out, sore hands,a chopped up anchor bouy, frustrated and cursing,we gave in and cut off our lovely Bruce anchor and it's chain.Forced then to make an early return to base,as it was impossible to drift fish [wrong direction] and unsafe in those tide conditions without an anchor.to calculate cost of each fish caught,.........DONT ! LESSONS learned.Rig your anchor so that it will trip, and can be retrieved 2. Get a Grapnel anchor made of thin rods which will straiten under extreme pressure, with inexpensive corlene warp.Specifically reserved for rocky bottoms 3.when things are not going right, try to keep an eye on everything, luckily our boat has a skeg and prop guard,so at least when chopping up the anchor bouy, the warp didnt go round the prop ! For us,just an ordinary typical day out fishing.Publication rights for this short story are reserved,as,when I retire from Seeking[as different from fishing } I shall be publishing a book in order to pass on my SKILLS and Knowledge to others less fortunate than myself.....jack
  2. Andy and I will be between Swanage and Kimmeridge tommorow in Pal-o-mine {arvor 25 ].We were hoping for some company,if anyone is about there please give us a "shout".We are hoping to expend less fuel and catch something [well it would make a nice change]..cheers Jack
  3. My son Andy and I are going out on Sunday,in Pal-o-mine [25' arvor].We are notoriously crap at fishing and would be glad to meet up with someone who knows whats what.If you would like to tell me your boat name,we will come around that way,and perhaps we could give you a "shout".

  8. Had a result today.I checked all the sites I could find, buying and selling reel bits, found at least 4 people LOOKING for a spare spool for the 6ooap.On an impulse ,I checked on e-bay to see if someone was selling a 600 ap on the cheap.Bingo ! saw advert at 16.00 hrs,and at 16.10,had bought ,a 600ap; a 600;and a 602. all said to be good for 30 squids including P+P. Fingers crossed,if nothing else I have brought my own one back into use and have spares....Jack
  9. Keep it up Rich,You and I can soon form a partnership and together come up with even worse ones.On second thought, could that realy be possible ?

    jokes

Long john Silver,as ships cook, takes the longboat to go fishing. He takes with him,his parrot and the cabin boy. When they are sat fishing the cabin boy remarks,"why has your Parrot got a piece of string dangling from each leg ?" "aaargh ! " says Long John."when I do pull the string on his left leg,he do root about in the bait box and fetch out a nice worm, and when I do pull the string on the right leg, he do shove it on the hook.".... "thats clever, says the boy, what does he do if you pull on both strings at once ? "... "He do fall off the ruddy perch lad !." I did warn you....Jack
  11. I saw your pic.and realized that I got hold of the wrong info....anyone want to buy a couple of deep frozen Frenchmen.?
  12. I submitted a triple advice question to the postboard, and then added another post somewhere else. By the time I had completed that one,my first post had been answered."How fantastic" I thought. So trotted off to tell my wife of my good results. Can you believe what she said ?. " It's a pity that those members who are at work, ar'nt getting on with thier job ,and that those who are retired are SAD and should find something better to do than sit in front of that machine, and that INCLUDES YOU !!"..I felt so faint that I could hardly bring myself to drink the cup of tea she had just made me. Lyme Regis Bay

I can believe it,I take the Grandkids to West Bay every August for a week, and there are always dumped Doggies; Huss and Pout in the Harbour. As the commercial chaps invariably pass thier discards on, to the Pot men, I always assume that its the Fishing Charter customers dumping them, perhaps after showing the Wife and Kids
  15. Similar to Barrys topic, I have been digging through older reels as stated in the great Braid debate.I have a pair of Garcia Mitchell 600 AP. reels, one perfect working like a sewing machine, the other minus it's spool.[later] can anyone say if its possible to scource a replacement Metal spool for this model. Wait for this ...The original plastic spool literally exploded, under the pressure after fighting an unknown species of fish for almost an hour [3 of us taking it in turn] whilst the beast towed my 14'boat with 3 anglers, from where it was hooked just off the outer edge of Christchurch ledge bouy, against the tide toward Swanage.Of course the 40lb line cut immediatly when the spool collapsed. I threw the reel into a box in the garage and it has been there for at least 25yrs. Other than the spool , it seems fine !.we suspect it may have been a common Skate,as one or two had been taken around that area,at that time. Ps. I used to catch fish then...Jack

    Bass Flies

I have just bought a couple of flies from "johnthepike" on e-bay.They look impressive, but was at once put in mind of the Outragious Mackerell feathers you could buy, so I rooted through my garage boxes and there they were, 4" long and in the most wonderfull colours.I will split up the string of 6.and try each one as a solo fly. they don't look any less likely to work than the

    bulk braid

I Have dug out 2 of my largish reels for wreck work and plan to put braid on them.I have used all through wire before but not braid, Couple of dummy questions please,do I need to fill the whole spool with braid or can I just have a top layer. 2 If top layer, how much is enough, for our type of fishing.3 will 30lb be about right. Thanks in anticipation. Jack

    John C

Hi John,Welcome in. Your phrase "all gear,no idea" just needs "show no fear" and you are at once a full member of a small select group.within the club,Be warned however ,the minute you start dragging in decent fish, you are out and will have to be classed with the "Big Boys". cheers Jack.

    Boat Building???

A few years back,a mate and I built a 13' glassfibre Dory,in winter in my garage, thinking "how hard can it be? ....Well i'l tell you. 1. when the hull arrived,it was like a large bendy bath, 1a.prepare large wooden jig to stand it on and establish a true keel and shape. 2,make supports [more woodwork] to establish correct hull shape and alignment.3.this is where you discover you could have done with a lot more sheltered space to work in. Next having secured vast amounts of timber ;chopped strand mat ;resin and thinner/cleaner,and lots of throwaway paint brushes and rollers.you need to be sure that you can maintain a temperature sufficient to cure the work you are do-ing quickly.[ours was in winter,in a standard garage with plugged in electric radiators,] the materials are all highly inflamable and as we discovered poisonous and skin irritating ,to say nothing of smelly and sticky. GRP sticks to hands ;hair and clothing much more readily than to timber or other GRP.We were both banned from entering the house, because you will drop lots and it sticks to your boots ! also no amount of showering and hair washing gets rid of the smell. If your kit instuctins say "can be built by 2 persons in 50hrs",just laugh and throw that part away. To finish this novel,Have a go ! maintain an open attitude to the plans,be inventive when you get to tasks they don't describe fully.keep a sense of humour and dont give up and advertise your incompleted effort on e-bay with the phrase "needs only a couple of hours to complete" P .S. When you finsh you can nail your rock solid overalls to the garage wall as an artwork. Best of luck Jack
  22. Thanks for all the help and advice,we cant put it to the test until we next use the boat, but will post the results.. jack
  23. When on holiday in Spain,I bought from an up-market tackle shop,2 boat rods that seemed to be ideal to use from my 12' zodiac, they are shortish light almost quiver tip.The first is labelled. Kali. Morea 240.2.42mtr..5-30lb.and has a charter boat decal and the legend "sensy-tip"...The second is similar with markings Kali Star Boat 210.rated.2.06mtr.action 2-30lb. both have slender butts that give just a little ,with thier second sections tapering to a biro refill thi ckness at the tip. all rings are ceramic lined and they appear to be well finished. Question.Do I dare to use them to the ratings specified,I have not yet plucked up the courage.
  24. Thanks Duncan.Young useless, said he had sussed the delete last track and had sat on the boat for almost an hour do- ing it with no discernable change, but after all there must be almost 100 over the same ground,so it would be an all day job.he says now that bearing in mind we have never succeeded in finding anything we had set out to look for,he will do as you suggest and delete the lot....jack
  25. My son Andy has this wonderous device fitted to his boat.Just like a snail, every time we go out it leaves a trail on the screen.unfortunately our accumulated trails now appear as Motorways ! and no matter what we do, we cant erase them.We have read and re-read the manual, but nothing works.doe's any out there have the answer ?.And even better [although cheekier ] is there anyone who would be prepared to give some tuition in its use ?.we are marina based in Poole, and would be happy to re-emburse expenses...[simrad CE 33 Colour chart Plotter.]
