Mike, I am curious what are the "worlds" rules?

Nice one Dave. Another monster flounder well worth the long trip to the mark. [emoji2]

I couldn't really enter the comp as I was on my own after Jim was taken ill, Diane didn't fancy getting bounced around, can't really blame her. A late start for me a fair way offshore to a spot I know to get a bit of tide; anchored ok, but the rollers were tossing the boat all over the place. After hanging on to the sides when a big set came through with the boat side on to them I decided to move without even wetting a line. Bit of a waste of time fishing wise; but I did enjoy crashing though the waves; amazing how big the waves can get with only a short fetch. So headed to the car park. No end of whiting of all sizes when the tide steadied but no cod. I did lose a particularly big fish on the whiting gear, just under the boat, never saw it, it fought like a big bass, another one I'll never know about. Cod fishing this winter is certainty a bit of a lottery, I don't appear to have any winning tickets .

I think so, I don't think he did anything wrong. He told me he took it easy once he felt the engines were having trouble syncing. Without trust the world's a poorer place.

You will be welcome on Tigerfish Jim.

I let my lad use Tigerfish and whats my reward. Phone rings, "hi Dad the port side propeller has gone!!" "What did you do?" "Nothing, honest." "What did you hit?" "Nothing." "Have you been ragging the engine?" "No." Further questions ensued but if I believed him it must have come off in the Solent during normal motoring. Tigerfish has 2 Volvo D4 260s with DPH drives with duoprops. The rear port propeller, cone and nut had gone. It is not supposed to ever happen on DPH drives. I searched the Internet and found nothing to indicate loosing props from DPH drives was a problem. I bought a new rear prop from Keypart, lower cost than direct from Volvo. On fitting it rubbed against the front prop, tried on the starboard side it rubbed on that side as well. On checking against the old rear prop the hub was in a different place, see the photo’s. I assumed the new hub must be made incorrectly, but on checking against a drawing it was the old one that didn’t comply. Basically the hub was 3mm further forward on the old prop, or put another way the props had moved backwards. I was starting to think something had happened to all the old props, this was confirmed by a chat to Propeller Solution who told it like this. Over time the props move back on their hubs and after about 600 engine hours or more the rear hubs moves back so far that the prop starts to press against the cone, which presses against the nut. Result the nut comes undone and the prop is lost. All my hubs had moved by the same amount, around 3mm. I’ve now had them all rehubbed by Streamlined Propellers and with everything fitted Tigerfish is running fine again. The new hubs have apparently some sort of lip which should stop this happening. The service schedule does not so far as I’m aware recommend checking for movement of the hub. I think it should. Volvo typically won’t admit the problem so I’m told. So DPH drive owners I recommend checking yourself, the main thing to look for is that there is a gap between the hub and the cone. If not a lost prop is a possibility. Rehubbing is the lowest cost way to correct the issue, both front and rear props need to be done at the same time. Adam very kindly lent me the cone off his boat, it's not going anywhere for a while...., they are out of stock at present.

The very best of luck, hope it is only the weather that is grim out there. Let us know how you get on.

Between Xmas and New Year for me to.

In my view you don't tear up what is already agreed, to rerun a comp that has already been run. If we want another cod comp (Cod Comp 2, the rerun....) and I'm happy to give it another go, I think it will need to be on a date not already penciled in, maybe just after Christmas or January.

My Targa has limber holes all through and 3 water tight compartments with auto bilge pumps. In each of the 3 compartments the limber hole is plugged with a removable rubber bung so a bit of the best of both worlds, just a thought.

I wish you lots of energy Adam, that is one mother of a job there. I'm sure it will be great boat once complete. Seeing how much work is required is making me feel old [emoji53].

Now that's the way to add to your species list. Well done.

Hmm, the various estimates for the proportion of the catch taken by recreational fisherman seems very high, either the commercial fisherman are crap at catching fish or the recreational fisher folk round here are pretty useless or their figures are wrong. I'm betting the latter. Coming soon, more monitoring of us. Steve

Ridges.... sonarcharts makes the bottom look more interesting than it actually is, there are some pretty deep holes and ridges shown which as Chris says are just not there, particularly south of the IoW, thats even before the storms. And also some of my old marks just don't look the same anymore and that is after the storms. However some of the extra detail seems not to be made up, IMO sonarcharts are something of the work in progress, after loading the sonarcharts I marked up quite a number of points for investigation, if I am in the area of one I check it out, some are total fiction so I'm not going to waste fuel with major detours, however, not all are total fiction.
