Whoop Whoop! Currently sitting in 3rd and fourth place, but with an equal overall score to the leader. Please press the "Vote for me" button if you have not done so as of yet! Thanks -

Oops Mike, forgot about our sailing members! Thanks to one and all for the votes! Keep 'em coming. I may be tempted to get in with the Tope this year in Alderney if I win! NB: In the eddy, not in the rip or next stop would be Roscoff! -
Chaps A little favour please. Can't remember how, but I was shown a website called "boat2boat" which specialises in boat orientated photos to swap and share. Anyway, I uploaded about ten pics including some from Alderney last year and some from Marlin fishing. Just been emailed to say that two of mine are shortlisted (23 pics shortlisted) in a compeition to win a waterproof camera. I could really do with a waterproof camera as my digital slrs don't like getting a regular salty dunking! So please, pretty please and double please again would vote for my two shortlisted Marlin pics! At the moment it is arty farty sunset and WAFI shots that seem to be appealing to most so I need to load things in my favour! Please vote for my two pics here! http://www.ybw.com/pictures/motorboats/boa...ed-by-boat2boat

It was actually a really nice trip Duncan. Slowed down through the race purely for comfort. Never got any air under the boat for the entire trip and only actually took about three face fulls of salt spray over the side. It wasn't what you would call flat by any stretch, but never more than slight and it was that comfortable, "rhythmic" wave motion rather than really hard landings (one did catch the chine, but only the one).

Awesome trip over yesterday. Great boat and fabulous engine. Untied lines at PBM at 10.05 and at 14.20 was having a lovely cup of tea 2 miles off Grosnez Point on the NW coats of Jersey. 105nm total for an average of 2.8nmpg which isn't bad from a big old 250Hp. Cruised at between 20 and 31.5 knots with a 3/4 hour drop to 18 knots through the Alderney Race. No fog with slight sea mist and vis of about 7 miles, more if you really squinted.

Hi Guys Tony, really sorry, but I organised crew yesterday evening. Would have loved to have had you along. Passport would have been a good idea in case we had to divert to France and also for ID if needed when getting on the Ferry in Jersey, getting off in Poole etc.

You may remember I asked if anyone wanted to join me on a delivery of a centre console Whiteshark 225 and Mercury 250Hp to Jersey?... Well, I plan to leave on Friday at about 10.30 from Poole aiming to arrive St. Helier at about 17:00. The owner has agreed to cover costs back to Poole for both myself and a crew person and that is likely to be on the Condor 19:30 sailing back to Poole for 23:00. No pay and you'll need to bring your own sandwiches and a flask, but a cracking boat and geat experience, particularly if you are building up hours for a qualification such as Yachtmaster etc. The idea is to split the driving with me doing the bits that may involve scratching the boat at either end! Need to know asap if a club member wants to come along for a great day with LOTS of fresh air or I'll offer it to a non fishing friend to come as an extra man onboard. Sorry, no fishing, just delivering! Tom

Hi Mark Welcome to the forum / club. The Dell Quay is a cracking inshore / harbour boat. Brilliant on the bass etc. Best of luck with her and enjoy the club. Tom

Just wanting to add that it can be calmer mid channel than it is over Poole Rocks so there is, in theory, no reason why smaller boats shouldn't be there if properly equipped and with crew who know what they are doing. The current system allows a muppet with no training and a boat to head out into the Swash when an ebbing spring tide hits a F10 Easterly. (OK the quote about reckless endangerment may be pulled into play, but the point being that modern forecasting is good and are boats are limited more by weather than by distance).

Dave Not wishing to be rude, but we never have conditions that change like that anymore. You would never be caught out in strong winds you didn't know were coming and we all know what wind over tide does. And if we don't understand either of the above then we shouldn't be beyond the current 12 mile "inshore" limits anyway. During the last couple of days of strong winds (6s and 7s) the wave height at the channel light buoy has only just broken the 2m barrier a couple of times and there is no way that any of us would be out there in it. F6 winds and 2m waves are extreme conditions on our small boats and if we were caught out afloat in those then we should be afloat as we aren't competent enough. Likewise, speaking from experience in several MUCH larger Cat B boats we wouldn't want to be in 4m waves and F8 winds in our smaller ones. The CE cats are where are boats limits are at. Beyond them nobody can say how the boat will cope, but they should manage in competent hands up to those points. If "caught in a storm" 1 mile offshore and the 3m breaking waves eventually capsized the boat and the insurance had to pay out then more fool them for not checking the boaters ability as who the heck gets caught in a storm nowdays?

One for Dommy and slightly off tack: Why are insurance companies so antiquated in their definitions? What I mean is that around 2004 the CE definitions were changed from relating to distances from shore to actual weather conditions. They recognised that weather conditions are far more relevant to a boater than how far they are from land. Isn't it time that insurers changed to meet these definitions too? I imagine it would work out better for the isurance companies as I guess a number of small boats are lost or damaged when out in conditions way beyond their CE rating, but within their insurance cover. On the flip side it would offer much more flexible cover for the boater who does extended cruising offshore as none of us are stupid enough to go out and get beaten senseless in weather are boats shouldn't be in anyway. The two key CE categories of relevance to 99% of us including SIBs (perhaps excluding Kayaks) is Category C and Category B. None of us would actively choose to be out in anything over Categroy C conditions even though a number of us own category B boats. Category C: Wave heights up to and including 2m and winds of F6. Category B: Wave heights up to and including 4m and winds of F8. Surely boats should simply be insured to the capability of their CE rating? It is so much more relevant and simple.

Sadly they were. One of the French fishermen has been killed. On a selfish note, I hope that the ferry is still running as I am due back from Jersey on her on the 19:30 sailing next Saturday!

Cheers again Nige

My own personal thoughts on the engine size with a Warrior is not to go as big as it is rated. I know the power hungry suggest big engines, but the 165 is an excellent small fisher and works perfectly within it's original design parameters with a 60Hp. Go large and you start to get handling issues and some serious porpoising as you ae trying to ring more out of it than it was ever designed to do. With a 60Hp she'll do 26 to 28 knots two up, she won't porpoise and is one of the finest small open cuddy fishing boats. Put a bigger engine on and beyond 23 knots they start to porpoise to the point that the boat has to have smart tabs and an additional wedge to trim the engine in even further... that's quite a major compromise just to squeeze an extra few knots from the hull.

Cash waiting for a good running 50Hp to 75Hp electric start, ideally PTT, outboard and controls. 2s or 4s, price paid will depend on age and condition. Pretty sure it will be a long shaft that is needed. This is for a work project, but may benefit any club member if they have one for sale. Cheers Tom

It'd make a great fighting chair! When we off to CV?

i sincerley hope where i left it! or should i take the keys to the digs with me? Rest assured that she will be very safe and the engine will still be cold when you step aboard!
-
But does Greg know where the boat will be early in the mornings? I suppose he can see speedy from his digs Charlie Ssssh you! We are there for the Turbot fishing! "I checked the tides Greg and according to all my sources there is absolutely no point in you getting down to the boat before about 10.30am. I'll have her warmed up and alongside the wall for then?"

Wicked! A Lumpsucker Never actually seen one. Don't think they are rare, but I think they are rarely hooked. What a great catch!
-
Had one about 30cm (from memory, this was back in 2005) out on the Dolphin Sands and didn't immediately recognise it. Pretty fish, taste awful!

Whoop Whoop WHOOP!!! Yey, looks like I am back in. Greg has offered me a space on his fabulous Osprey assuming she is ready in time. I'll be crewing with Terry and in exchange for some fishing time ( ) I shall be working hard as galley slave, anchor monkey, part time skipper, water taxi and security guard... I can't wait! Add me to the evenings out list Terry!
