    Prop Repairs

I can thoroughly recommend a stainless prop, not just for performance reasons, but because they really do take the ground. One of our dive club ribs had a 90hp with st/steel prop for 10 years and dredged the bar many times without damage. On our other rib with 75hp and aluminium prop it was in the repair shop every year and more than once. So bad was the problem we always carried a plastic, blade replaceable prop and spare blades. St/steel seems expensive initially but over time it

  4. Whats the club record for blue fin tuna? Ive just been checking on the GPS to see if where my in laws live in Spain falls within the "well south limit" and its looking good for the tuna run in Sept and October. Caught 10 of them last October, so I'm going to be looking for the real big ones next September! Gordon H
  5. The bream season will soon be here and for this species and bass, etc I thoroughly recommend the following top quality kit. Combine a Fladen Paxton 2002 8ft Downrigger -

  8. Will there be a training day on how to use this photo album? If there is please put me down for it as I can't seem to make it work. Gordon H
  9. Me too! I recognise now that after over 40 years sea fishing in which time I've probably decimated cod stocks by keeping every one caught, I need to change my ways. From now on I promise to return as many as I've caught, all 2 of them, with a total combined weight of 8lb 2oz. Of course I've signed the form, but for me cod fishing has not declined in any way over the years, it

Yes, I've tried this link before and again now, but can't get it to work, may be my computer set up is preventing download. However, I'm reluctant to alter my security settings too much or maybe I'm just too thick to work it out. Another computer dinosaur

Excellent information guys thanks, while were on the subject I've also looked for information regarding accessability of the slipway at Portland. Not the one in the boat yard by the Fleet Bridge, but the one in town. Only seen it in a BFM article but never actually been there myself and not able to find anything on the web. I note that a third edition of the Good Launch Guide is out, not that I knew there was a first and second, so I'll have to invest in one asap.

Paul, You mentioned Lymington has a slip, is it accessable at all states of tide? Gordon H

    Insurance

This was a useful thread, I just got a quote from one of the companies mentioned and it was less than half what I paid this year. I know where I'm getting my next insurance from, keep up the good work. Gordon H
  17. This will get the anchor up!
  18. I have been looking this up on the web and I think what is required is that 1. You have made a check list of all the essential equipment required for the passage you intend to make, i.e. life jackets, flares, radio, charts, etc, etc. 2. That you have them on board. 3. You have made a log with weather forecast, tidal information and route plan of where you going ETA's etc included. 4. Risk mitigation i.e. escape plan to nearest safe haven if things get nasty, back up engine, paddles, bailer and so on. 5. You dont need to file it each time, but you should be able to provide it if you're rescued as it could be used in court. Without it you could be considered negligent! As skipper you have a duty of care to all on board to ensure adequate precautions have been made to maintain their safety. Gordon H

    Near Miss.

The winch eye is the way to go! My last boat was an Arvor 21 and I had a scary moment using the stern post to pull out the anchor. It happened in shallow harbour water when the anchor stuck in the mud, as soon as the warp tightened stern almost went straight under. A good cure for constipation but I wouldn

Another point worth mentioning is to try and avoid a stuck anchor in the first place. I know I
  22. I agree, unlike plaice which are really easy to catch, in fact I threw several large ones back last Sunday as it was a flounder competition. I was amazed to see the monsters presented for weigh in but never though much about it at the time. But in hindsight I
  23. Adam, If you're talking Saturday I won't be able to get through the Run much before 10:00 am. Now I know the club's using CH6 I'll give you a call. Gordon H
