Well, Bill and I entered the comp but spent too long in the river near Wick Thin lipped Mullet bashing! We were having a great time until the start of the ebb when things went quite. We continued for a while until we were almost out of bait. We then headed out and saw Adam and Paul J drifting for a Bass, we needed mackeral but when we did find them they were really too large to use as live-bait but we kept some for the table and winter bait. Tried to find a Bass but was not successful as others, oh well there is always next time. Coddy

Hi Ron Just a thought or two, you could try Christchurch for moorings/marina. Others on the forum may be able to give you better info on costs and locations The other is to store the boat on the trailer and launch from Rockley, Cobbs or Christchurch or even Weymouth. Store boat where I keep mine until you move and settled. Regards Dave

Hi Alan I expect you will get a number of replys with users thoughts on this and that sort of equipment, I am no differant from that. I would suggest a 10 to 20lb class downtide rod. This will cope with most fish you will come accross and yet still allow you to use some heavy weights if you have to fish in strong tides without killing the rod. I use a two piece Abu Conolon boat rod, 10 - 17lb, which I have found to be good and value for money. I use a Penn 535 reel, no level wind on mine, which works fine. There are many good uptiders from Abu, Greys, Ugly stick all around the 9ft 6in length. Some have retractable butts so make good up and down class rods. I would suggest that most rods will catch any fish but the reel makes sure you get it back to the boat, so if you spend a little more on a good reel it should last you many years with a little maintainance. Penn, Shimano, Diawa are all good makes with a reasonable after sales service. Don't forget a nice light spinning (carp) outfit with a fixed spool for the Bass, mullet and other light tackle species that are around. Out of interest, I have an Abu Conolon uptider rod for sale which you are welcome to have a look at and try if you are interested, just PM me and I will send you my telephone number and address or use the latest members list Martin sent out recently. I will leave it here for others to respond with their ideas. Coddy

Hi all Last weekend I was involved in a friendly species comp fishing from the Eastern side of the IOW. The area allowed is Selsey Bill to St.Catherines and up to Cowes in the Solent. I launched from Hayling Island and went out on the Friday pm to catch some mackerel for the following day's bait. As I was out of Chichester there seemed not too many about but in Langstone entrance the sea was alive with them! Saturday I went out to a mark I know just before Utopia and managed a couple of small Tope, the biggest to 11lbs, but the sea and wind started to increase so we headed inshore a bit to get some cover from the land. We were soon into wrasse, bream and pout and even after a couple of moves they seamed to follow us around. Sunday went out in the rain at 7.30am to a flat calm sea but within an hour or so the wind increased with the sea state and playing safe we shot back in as the Coastguard's forecast a gale 8 warning imminent. Not a great week-end for fish for us, others had some good sport on smoothies but out of 21 people on small boats, I was the only one who got Tope so it would appear they are not about in great numbers yet. All in all a great weekend with mates but cr**p weather for a Bank Holiday! Nothing to add to club catch reports as outside fishing area. Coddy

For those without an anchor/warp storage locker, a cut down version of these drums make a super deck storage tub. This allows easy deployment and recovery of the anchor and warp for those without front hatches or feel safer to do all this from the side of the boat from the cockpit area. Coddy

Hi Charlie I havn't got the numeric keypad but on the hand mike I have a dedicated 16 button, Hi/Lo signal button, Channel up/down and 3 channel scan button. It is a Navman 7100 If you like I can drop it around sometime for you to have a look see. It's not kept on the boat for obvious reasons. Coddy

Hi Harry It depends where you launch, Baiter you have no option but bury the trailer in the water, Cobbs, Rockley, Wick, Weymouth public slip, you only need to just get the wheels wet. Not sure about Mudeford but I think thats a shallow slip as well. If unsure have a quick wade in your waders to check for depth but most decent slipways will be ok unless it is low spring tides. I have fitted a stainless steel transom guard to the back of my boat to take away the worry of dings, see here for pictures and prices http://www.craysidemarine.co.uk/ click on menu on the top of the page to "stainless" and it should bring it up ok. They get them made for each specific boat. I used a couple of small s/s screws and sikafelx to attach mine and it hasn't shiffted yet. Coddy

I would like to publicly thank Frank, skipper of Shiela Marie, for recovering my "stuck anchor" on the ledge last week-end. It was well and truly stuck but Frank, who was close by, came onto the radio and offered to recover if he could using his larger and more powerful boat, to try to recover for me. This he did and even brought the anchor back to my home! This is what being in a good club is all about, helping out others when possible. I hope I will be able to help others when they have a spot of trouble. Many thanks again Frank, you are a diamond sir. Coddy
