  4. Here's another post from our PhantomFisher days. The RNLI are apparently recommending that an Emergency Repair Kit is kept on board. I came across these details of such a kit on the web, for anyone interested and future reference. Kollision Kit(Reference #020-IMSKK) Launched at the Southampton International Boat Show in September, Kollision Kit 999 from Innovative Epoxy Solutions (IES) of Milford on Sea is an emergency repair kit for use in the event of a collision or water ingress whilst afloat. In the short time since the product was brought to market, the Kollision Kit 999 has attracted a great deal of interest, not least because all of the competing yachtsmen in the ongoing Millennium Round the World Yacht Race will be carrying the newly developed repair kit with them. The Kollision Kit 999 is proving of interest in the ocean racing fraternity, it is equally suitable as an emergency back-up on board all types of coastal and inland waterway vessels - and using the kit will also reduce the likelihood that an expensive lift out is required. The Kollision Kit 999 has two significant features, it is very easy to use, with forgiving mix ratios of 50:50. It can be mixed and applied underwater for a quick rapid seal within minutes. The epoxy cures to a solid, long-lasting protective coating under water and adheres to glass fibre, metal, wood, and concrete, whilst in more extreme damage cases a polymat sheet can be utilised in the repair. This resin can be used to repair leaks, bonding to steel, copper, PVC, paint, and resists water, oil and fuels and is equally suitable for underwater repairs and all kinds of general repairs as an all-purpose sealer and adhesive. The Kollision Kit is packed in a plastic zip bag, and includes the following components: a 75ml B10999 base mix; a 75ml BI0999 cure mix; a 18in x 12in polymat: scissors; instructions for use; a mixing board; two pairs of disposable gloves; four mixing spatulas; abrasive paper; MSDS; and a priority re-order form. 8. Been talking to one of the local experts. He says the tides next Sunday aren't too good for the Plaice. So, I'masking him for alternatives (e.g. the Nab Tower for the rays). Everything else will remain the same. If we go out to the Nab Tower it will probably be better if we can consolidate everyone onto Dave's, Mark's and Martin's boats. For example: Adam and I will go with Mark. Paul D with Martin and Dean. Richard Swain with Dave and Kev (not certain that Richard will be coming). Will that be OK? It's looking like Splash-Out will not be available anyway. They have found a problem whilst servicing the motor. cheers Bob F.
  9. Here's the details for the slip that we will be using. It's out of the main run, and so will not be affected by the tidal flow as much as I thought. Good! I will also contact Southsea Angling Club to let them know that we would like to fish the area, and ask them for tips on using the slip and local marks. Low tide will be around 08:30 but this will not affect launching. High tide is around 4pm (need to wait till tomorrow to get the exact times). The plan is to meet at the "Roundways???" Motorway Service Station on the M27, just before the M3 junction. Shall we say we'll meet there at 8am? Slip details: Name: Eastney Beach, Eastney Type of ramp: Concrete Upper ramp area is: Shingle Lower ramp area is: Sand Boat suitability: Large trailer Length of ramp: All of tidal range Charges Jet ski:
  10. MunterHunter, Lulworth Banks are mass of rock structures with drop-offs and high bluffs with rock pinicles, around which large shoals of pollack and pouting swim. It's also the haunt of many wrasse, including the Cuckoo Wrasse. On the edges are fingers of gravel areas which Plaice can be taken. Depths over the bank vary from 9m to 21m on the gravel beds. Tides can be quite strong at times. Inshore there is Durdle Door - stay close for wrasse and anchor a 1/2 mile out for ray. You can drift Bats Head reef for Bass or Pollack. Mupe Rock - drift in close on the flood for Bass and Pollack. Further out is Adamant Shoal and Ten Fatham Bank, but that's another story. Bob F.
  11. Paul, According to the articles I've read, and from what Charlie has told me, it is a place to avoid. Dive Dorset says it's a terrifying place to be when the tide is running, especially when it is wind against tide. If you look at the charts, there are warnings of "overfalls" on the west and east-flowing streams. Even on a calm day it is a place to keep well clear of. The ledge stretches out to sea from St Aldhelm's Head for a distance of almost 5 miles in a SW direction at a level of about 20m. Either side there are drops to 40m and 60m with sheer cliff edges in some places, which cause the tidal stream to rear up and form a mass of violent waves. Boats use two passages to navigate the ledge. You either go far out to sea and go around it, or you can take the inside passage which is tight into the rocky headland. Bob F.
  12. Not fished it myself, but I do have some info on the area somewhere. I'll try to dig it out. Remind me if I forget. Bob F.
  13. We missed you tonight, Peter. Busy working on our bits, I guess.
  14. I haven't fished off Portland Bill for 20+ years. Used to fish Church Ope. From what I remember, there is a steep climb down some steps to the small cove beach. The beach is south facing and there are rocks to the right and left with the middle being clear sand. I used to fish to the right and cast just over the edge of the rocks. Species at this time of year are surprizingly varied, but you have to fish during dark hours!! Small spotted rays, bass, sole to a 1lb, pollack, pout, poor cod, and even small plaice (at night!!). Bob F.
  15. Alderney Angling can be a useful site/shop to know. http://freespace.virgin.net/darren.braby/ Darren has a small online shop and sends his packages to the UK marked as "gift" which usually avoids paying duty. I've exchanged a few emails with him in the past, and he has always been very cooperative and polite. Definitely a good contact for updates on the local fishing. Worth talking to if you intend to do any fishing from the shore in the evening. Bob F.
  16. Good work Paul.
  17. How come you didn't go the Warbarrow, MunterHunter? Was looking forward to the Ray catch report!!
  18. There will be Sole around, but only the small ones. Adam had one a couple of weeks ago. The larger Sole arrive later (according to Alan at Castaways). Bob F.
  19. To promote the range in the UK, I guess. Once people start buying more it will go up.
  20. Great stuff Whippet. Nice to hear the whole story from start to finish, with the pros and cons. It'll be interesting to compare it with Paul's story when his new toy arrives. Certainly seems worth the effort in certain situations.
  21. Super stuff. Thanks. It all helps to put our own twist to the species articles. cheers Bob F
  22. If you are interested I have a contact who will get them direct from YYS. His prices are: Maxximus 7' 6lb Class IM7 Carbon
  23. I'd go for the Fladen Maxximus range. Saw them in Castaways today. These are really robust rods made from good quality materials which will last for ages. The rings are really sturdy and the reel fitting is all metal. They even have metal gimbols on all the ones I looked at. Price
  24. Peter, excellent mate. That is exactly what I am looking for. Facts, tip-bits, interesting stories, myths, especially with a local touch. Adam, Charlie, yes there will be a section on handling conger. Nice job matey!
  25. I was talking to Alan in Castaways today and he mentioned that the odd ray was being caught from Warbarrow, and in the east at Barton. Bob F.
