I used to have a nice bow roller fitted to mine, until one day, with a novice as crew, he got the rope underneath the fitting, between the hull and the overhang and as the warp tightened..... yes you've guessed it.... Ping.. the fitting came off with a great bang, flew up in the air and landed on the deck! Anyway, I was thinking of removing it, and this just changed the job to a bit of fibreglass repair work... I think the attitude of the local Police force where you are is no different to the experience I had when I had my boat done over - report it for the statistics, file it and forget it. Twice or more, I've contacted the Police with my crime number and been told 'the officer' is not on duty, or "I will pass on the message and he will contact you". Did he ? fxxx ! Firstly, they are just too thinly spread, and secondly this sort of crime is given an exceptionally small profile by the government. That is, no one was hurt or injured, and the goods are insured, so someone will pay for it in the end - not the Police. The reaction from my insurers when asked whether they would pay if it happened again, was "well sir we can confirm you are covered". They didnt seem the slightest bit interested or were unable to say more than, "well if you lock it up and put an alarm on it, that would be a good idea." Until we start to have a collective voice, nothing will change - in fact its likely to get worse. I would like to see the prosecution make a case for trespass when your mate recovered his car and provided evidence of theft. This is again typical of the Police response in 'avoiding a breech of the peace with minimum risk of having to fill out any paperwork' I would also like to see someone from dorset marine crime unit come to the club meeting and explain it all to us. Then we should raise it with our MP and get the insurers to fund the marine crime unit resources. Hope you get the Insurers to meet your claim - I know how you feel. Paul

Nige.... I'm not so sure... if you are comparing Rodman with Orkney! The 24 engine cover is a right faff to remove. Its not hinged as far as I've seen, and the engine is shoe horned in. The vee sections are quite flat aft, which means the engine doesnt have a great depth to sit in, consequently the above deck lump takes alot of deck area out od what would be a superb space. The lay up and general construction is on the light side after all it only weighs 2.5 tonne. But then you do get good performance. I love the layout of the Orkney24, but it wont sleep more than 2, and you cant get into the heads with the double berth down. Outside, the deck can flex quite alot on the older models. However the Rodmans are altogether a different animal. They dont weigh 5 tonnes for nothing. aaalso... if you break anything on the orkney, and want to get it through them, it took me 3 months to get a new window and door, as their suppliers are giving them stick at the moment with the receivership issues. Have I put you off the journey yet ?? Paul

I'm sure the stanley blades in law are as acceptable as setting glass into the top of a wall - as long as it is out of reach - no one can claim they had a valid reason for being where they shouldnt be... Being slightly serious !!!! I wonder how many of us have alarms of any sort fitted ? This is the way I'm going - I'm just about to pick my boat up from BHG and hand over a big cheque.. Paul

Nige, Really sorry - it messes up your outlook on life for quite a while, as well as all the hassle fixing it. Perhaps we can get a bulk buy discount on plotters ? - I still am in the market for a plotter/sounder - I wouldnt hold out any hope of it turning up on ebay - these people may be mad but they are not stupid. I dont know why HKJ and other insurers dont work closer with Police to get some support for regular harbour/marina watches backed up by a Police prescence. I've heard diddly squat from Poole Police since mine happened. Until these sods steal the Police RIB or break into the station and steal all their comms equipment - nothing will get done. They are even scaling back the support to marine watch in Poole - due to the general budget cuts. Basically this is burgulary afloat and should be no different to other property in their response. Hope you recover quickly from this setback. Regards Paul
