  1. Interesting thread I have seen 200lb nylon biten straight through more than once, by what was almost certainly tope. As the idea of circle hooks is to let the fish take them then apply pressure so that they hook into the corner of the mouth on their way out, these must also stand a good chance of a bite off. Kam we try to hit our bites early nowadays, so the chances of a deep hooked fish are minimal, a lot of fish are landed chewing on the hook or the single strand wire very close to it.
  2. Thanks Adam I had not realised we were rocking about that much I enjoyed the fight from that one 13lb 8 and the biggest on the first day
  3. Thanks Adam For some reason I did not use my Avet last week so it is yet to be used/christened. Oh well will just have to go again are you getting the same ones for your 12lb class? Charlie
  4. we use wire biting ends about 9" long, on fairly small very sharp bronze hooks with small barbs on our tope traces. the traces are in about 100lb mono. I do not think it would take a tope long to get rid of one, or for the hook to rot out.
  5. You are a true tackle collector [tart] but they are good Adam any chance of the video of my 12 kensaki loaded up last weekend? Charlie
  6. Perhaps we could get the beam trawling banned to protect our area. I see he does not state how much easier it is to find scallops now that the dredgers do not get them all. Charlie
  7. Nice one Lofty Well done mate
  8. Sidewinders White, red or mackerel firetails Red shads hope that helps
  9. I am booked on Holiday to coincide with the programmed Club trip two weeks earlier and am hoping to go then with Wendy. I would not be able to go twice , but if the first does get cancelled I would be tempted. I have just been to see Andy and replaced the lures lost last weekend Charlie

  11. As you say Paul I think that between us we made the very best of the weather and I am very pleased to not be out in todays weather beating accross the channel. The change of plan to head West and return with the wind and tide from behind seemed good, as we managed a return leg at normal speeds after a cracking second day on the wrecks. Although the late booking of digs in various locations, made the social side difficult it was still a great trip. I am shattered this morning. We also look forward to seeing the reports and pictures Charlie
  12. Looking forward to seeing her soon, she looks like a wonderful beast
  13. dont forget that sail for gold is on in portland this week, might be a tad crowded Have provisional booking for 4 boats in Portland Marina, [Good to have friends in the Marine Industry sometimes] but was a bit concerned about finding accomadation due to the Sail for Gold regatta. Charlie
  14. It is said that changing a boat name is unlucky Charnging it to Titanic 2 is probably pushing your luck a bit. a bit like Apollo13 really. Glad he got off OK Charlie
  15. Was looking at what could be done close to shore this looks like fun http://www.pecheaubar.com/videos.php?video...pe_de_Cherbourg I love the catch and release tank and the thought of a boat zooming about to measure and weigh fish so they can go back, dare I say well done the french Charlie
  16. Well done Graham Obviously the fishing gods smiled on you for your assistance of a young couple in trouble. A just reward for some very seamanlike behavior. Those of us that use the sea a lot soon learn to look out for each other, we never know when it will be our turn Oh and I hope some of those Mackeral are in the freezer ready for the weekend. speak later Charlie
  17. Thanks for sharing your obvious excitement with us all, it sounds like all the effort was rewarded with a great few days. Nice report and great pictures Charlie
  18. I think Kam got a bit mixed up with leader and leads As Martiin says ref the leaders Graham but we do use 60lb leaderrs when wrecking for eels ref the tope traces rig them with the 150 mono as they also make conger traces. If we start to get bite offs we have wire on the boat, so do not buy any. Hope that helps Charlie
  19. Happy Birthday Dave [Pirky] I hope you have a great day even if the breeze is blowing Charlie
  20. Well done Lofty for offering help and advice, shame the father was not willing to take it. also good to hear that another mariner came to assistance. As Charlie says the come to me signal is well used in the military, but usually gets you a blank look in civilian use.
  21. http://magicseaweed.com/Bournemouth-Area-R...edLongRange/uk/ I like this one
  22. Well done Mike It has been so long since we went out, that we may have forgotten how its done soon. Charlie
  23. Love too Stuie But at work
  24. Tom Do you fancy doing one on a home build, or maybe two offshores? You may have to choose mine for fishing as I am not sure Prodigy is allowed to get dirty Charlie
  25. I am sure that Committee Members posting on this thread are doing so as individuals and not as the Committee view. But having been on the Committee for many years I know that the committee would love to find the secret why Club events across the board do not get better attendances. It has been a question at committee meetings for most of our 19 years as a Club. We have tried so many changes to Competitions over the years but none seem to be 100%. As I said earlier, I like this comp because of the scope it offers to all. If I had a trailered boat I would be tempted to venture to the extremes of club waters East or West. I have a boat capable of going offshore, because like Tom that is the fishing I like to do. If weather allows that is where we hope to be. If I had a large slow boat, I would pick a spot, travel with the tide and give it a go, perhaps enjoying a long trip and staying overnight somewhere at anchor. Then let the tide push us home. [ As I used too for years on Great White] The smallest boats and Kayaks can join in and enjoy being part of this comp, with a very good chance of success. I wonder if dropping the entry fee and fishing just for the Club Trophies would make a differance. I am sure it is not the cost that stops Members joining in, but it may be. As Mike says the cost of an Alderney trip far outweighs any winnings, in fact so would an inshore trip if you chase around after a few species. To make money out of the winnings you would probably need to use a kayak or a Yacht. I also feel that limiting the comp to parts of the Club Waters for anything but safety reasons would put Members off. who knows
